Hey Tim,
I'm not sure what time my Oregon friend will arrive. If it's not too late, we will drop down for a visit and swap lies Friday afternoon/evening.
What slip are you in?
My cell phone is 360.413.0311
I doubt we will car pool to the boat show with you....it makes it a little tough on "when?" to leave.
If we don't see ya Friday night, we'll catch ya on Sat. morning.

I guess we will not be able to make the food portion of the meeting. I will see if you all are still at OE at 10:00 am, if not, I will see you all inside the Boat Show.
Did anyone decide what channel we will use on the FRS radios?

Saw Ted last night on the 341. Now that he sold it, I guess he can go home... Some nice Meridians but I still don't have 2 foot idis... Going back again a few more times this week. Seems the show is a bit sparse compared to years in the past... Especially in the East wing where all the merchandise is sold (West Marine and Boat US have electronics and not much else as of last evening).
No Eastbay yachts but a nice 38 Sabre Express.
Anyone needing a spare ticket and can hook up, I have a couple of vendor freebees from my friends at Furuno (yes, I have a Raymarine system). Not sure I will get to use them in one week of shows...
Got to find some black fenders to replace the white ones I have. I'm tired of cleaning them with acetone every few months...

I'm curious to hear what the folks who attend the boat show have to say about the new VP IPS propulsion system? Has anyone on this board sea-trialed the system? I wonder if VP is developing an I/O unit with the props infront of the lower unit? Seems logical to me that props turning in undisturbed water are more efficient. :dontknow:
Wish we could make the show this year, but we'll save the beans for a new top over the cockpit.

I may have walked right past them, but I didn't notice them. I saw a few Volvo DPs on display and they look pretty nice.
Only issue I see with the forward-facing props is the potential for increased damage. I've hit a lot of crap out there that jammed on the leg, jammed in the trim cylinders, cav plate and others. Each of those would have made a frontal asault on my blades otherwise. :

Well what a year it has been so far at the show! I had a very nice visit with Doug on Friday, thanks that meant a lot to me! Then on Saturday I was lucky enough to be presented with a very nice etched glass by Mike (SS) along with seeing my old buddy Bob and the famous Tim (Numbnuts). I also was given a really nice ceeeegaar by Gary (Nellie). I was touched by Spud and Kathy's (got it right this time) visit since I thought he was already in China!
Gentlmen you all really touched me with your visits and gifts.
Now for the funny stuff: Puget Mike and SeaDork walked in front of my boat four times and never once looked up to see me, however both of their wives came aboard my boat and said hi...... ain't that a hoot......oh well no biggie.
Then today Sunday I was treated with a visit with Steve (Beyond Kelp) hoping to see a couple round fight in the ring between me and SeaDork! HeHehehe!
ps. Doug I have sold three yachts so far and they still won't let me go home, but then I won't let me either! HeHeHe! :D

Neah... not yet. Still thinking big ole trawler. 2859 is my second choice, but even I decided to trailer some more, it wouldn't be a new one. I'm likely gonna look for one that needs lots of TLC and some attention to get her back where she needs to be.
Once I get the Carver repainted to the point she can be back in weather (she's all wooded down now), maybe I'll look for something that'll fit beside th house here. I fenced an area big enough for 35+ or so. I've even toyed with the idea of bringing a bigger boat here to put on the hard and rebuild. We'll see...
Besides... I'm waiting for that 8.2 Horizon motor to drop into a 289. :)

SS, and the rest of you that made it to the OE parking lot in the morning!! Did we hit the weather right or what!! Heck sun shine, hot cider, Brats and lies, what could be a better way to start off the day. It was great to make it over to the lake too!! It was hard to restrain SS from putting down a deposit on the Grand Banks, but I am glad to see he is thinking big!! Personally I liked that custom built all Aluminum 58ft Expedition vessel!! I am nearly convinced that when I am ready I will have to have one built (maybe just get the hull/and cabin built, engine(s) installed and do the rest myself???)
SS, Thanks for the etched glasses, that was really thoughtful! Ted it was good to see ya and glad you are doing well this year! All the venders deserve a lot of gratitude for they really are marathoners to be there for the whole show! I did accomplish what I came for, mainly the time to spe nd a few hours with the guys/gals that make up IBNW and to see what is new to spend money on.
I came home only spending less then $100 (darned if the Admiral didn't strip my wallet before I headed north)
Tim (the good looking "tall" one) Thanks for the visit and as always a good time!!)
SS, I will be talking to you more about Tig engines when I get ready to purchase.

Well I made it to the show today- i did find Volvo diesel engines at the Coastal Marine display. Got to talk to some transmission guys- visited Boat electric and bought me a nice digital test meter and a reference probe for under water testing. Going to try and stay on top of corrosion in the future. I had swung by the Bayliner amd Meridian boats to say hello to Larry and Bill- I almost gave up on meeting Ted but swung by one last time and he showed up. So I introduced myself to the Tedster- Sorry i could not stay long Ted but me back had about all it could take.
I have an MRI first thing Tuesday morning and hopefully find out what the heck is going on. Probably more corrosion issues...........

I'm heading back to the show on Tuesday and bringing the Admiral. We have a meeting at Ivars at 6PM so I thought I'd pull out of school after my last class and head in to see if I can find some fenders to buy. Glad you made it by the Vendors at the show! I really like the folks at Boat Electric. They still know what "meeting the needs of a customer" is all about. I am ordering from them some insulation for my Espar heat ducting in the Engine room and will likely buy a couple of batteries from them later in the spring.
Heck after all this rain I am starting to think I should put some 30wt in a sprayer and take a shower!!
I thoroughly enjoyed the boats afloat part of the show and next year I will plan on spending the whole day crawling around the boats and snapping pictures of the "way the big guns do it".
Doug, you owe it to yourself to go to the lake and crawl around!

If I were gonna spend the money on either... it would be the Grand Banks myself... Or the Krogen. It's just a better boat for where I'd wanna be at that size. Not stuck on the GB either. Lots of beautiful express trawlers out there.

Ted,
You are right there is a world of difference between the "plastic european" boats and the classic lines of a GB, CHB, Tolly, Selene, Krogen, Nordhaven, etc. etc. Each has there place and some of the go fast boats have a following as well. It will remain to be seen if Meridian will catch on and maintain their value/following as have some of the fore mentioned trawlers.
For sure the Fast boats keep the Prop shops glass repair shops in business!!
As for me I was more impressed with the "custom built boats". No doubt the price reflects the difference as well.
a wise ole boater once answered me when I asked him how fast I should cruise my Tolly, "go just as fast as you want to hit something". I have slowed down to an average cruise speed of between 10-12 knots and a fuel burn rate of 7gph. When I need to and want to I can push it up to close to 20 knots.
Keep selling,

When I want to go fast I just hop in my tender, it does 30- kinda shakes me up a bit to. Reminds me of my early days in my smaller boats. Fun getting that speed and feeling the water under ya once in awhile.
I tried out my reference probe this morning after the MRI- Everything looking good.
After reading about your guys infra red thermometers I went to HF in Renton and the only one they had was 50 bucks. I thought I read where SS paid much less? I did not buy it yet but looking.
I was hopiong they would have some larger metric wrenchs and they did not have crap for stock. I was dissapointed. But I did see many things I wanted to pick up one day. Not sure whY but looking at a small air compressor and a paint gun. What you guys recommend for air to push a gun. No really big jobs in future just small stuff.

Brad,
Glad to hear the MRI only showed generalized corrosion, not delamination! If you want a toy buy the IR thermometer at HF, if you want a real tool buy one from Raytech, As far as painting goes, unless you are painting a wagon or just "stuff". you will be better off buying quality gun/hopper etc. In my opinion with good quality paint costing as much a gallon as a good gun, it would not seem smart to screw up the job with a cheap gun, besides it is the time spent doing the initial prep work that will cost ya if you have to do it over again. (just my NSHO) I buy HF, All trade, Husky, Cresent, and other tools for jobs that I know I only will have to use them a few times, and or I am in a real pinch (like puller or a bigga wrench, pin punch, or BFH that I left at home in my hurry to get under way.

The trick to buying anything at harbor Freight is catching it on sale. Their sale prices are normally 30%40% off their normal prices. There are lots of things to stay aay from in there. Here are a few I know from experience:
Blades (hacksaw, such) ... total garbage
Drill Bits... not as hard as better ($$) bits
Sanding disks... worked great
Electric grinders (2) work awesome
Vice (works OK... but some cosmetic issues)
Drill Press (works like a charm)
Air fittings & hoses (can't beat 'em)
Lathes (2) Both work perfectly.
IR Thermometer (perfect and accurate to 1/2 degree)
Digital calipers (2) (VERY accurate)
ZIP ties (as good as any 3M bands)
Compact bender. Works great.
Sand Blaster - Works great
They're nothing special.. and I'd love to be able to afford the name brands on everything, but by buying these Chinese knock-offs, I can afford to have more of them than otherwise. Where else are you gonna find a 7" mini-lathe for $299.00?

Well, got to go to the on water show today. I was really looking forward to showing the Admiral the Compton. Got there and it was just starting to come down hard. Looked and looked for the boat but after seeing all the others we liked, we found Bellingham yacht guy who said the Compton was not there.... all the wet for nothing!!!
Except we liked the CHB... nice ride for $189k. Liked the other Express's as well. If the Admiral had her way, we'd be live-a-boards I think... Why does she liked the 1.6million dollar boats so much??? I think she needs to do the check book... lol... anyway, had fun and enjoyed this years show. Even in the rain.

That's my weakness... ask Bob. The HF is just right here in Everett and at the cheap prices I'm always buying stuff I don't need there. Just like the IR Probe... caught it on sale for $29 and figured what the heck. I've got a pipe bender that same way. Was bending some stainless railing material and just wanted to see how well the silly $69 thing worked. Worked fine, but never used it once. Works great on black pipe.
They definitely have some stuff I wouldn't bother with. Bought 50 hacksaw blades for like $2.99 once... total crap! One decent blade from Lowes would last longer than all of them combined. :) BUT... for cutting lightweight stuff... they work OK.

It's not about right Ted... I just was stating an opinion... I'd LOVE to have a Grand Banks, Nordhavn, Kady Krogen, Nordic Tug, American Tug, Pilgrim, Heritage East, Camano... the list goes on.
It just so happens that GB is now bridging the gap between conventional slow trawlers and fast cruisers, by building a trawler above the waterline and an Eastbay style hull underneath.
It's not my fault they've built a 24+ knot trawler. :D

Joel,
Not at all, In my opinion the european style is the boats that the windows and all the above deck lines all curve/flow forward and point to the fore deck, IMHO they all look like they are about to submerge, (and many of the smaller <60 ft do, I rode in one and when passing another boat and hitting the wake the water slapped against the flybridge.
Each to there own, I just happen to like the classic lines of boats designed by NA such as Ed Monk and others. Also up here in the inside waters visibility over the bow is real important, as we have a lot of "logs" floating around and many of the east coast boats, European style boats have the helm stations/fly bridges set way back with nearly no visibility of the water closer then 100ft. (At 20+ knots that is a new prop, shaft, strut, rudder, and hull repair/tow bill!)
Tim
PS: great picture! I want to someday come visit that great part of the world.

I like the classic lines as well, many of the newer boats are ok inside and some are down right beautiful, but the outside lines are just strange. I love the interior of the 459, but the outside is wierd looking.
Guess that is why I am a Navigator fan, they still have that real boat look to them.
Some of these boats I am beginning to have a hard time telling them apart, Seems like Carver and Merdian are almost looking like the same boat builder to me. I know the owners do not think so as I mentioned this to a 2005 Carver owner and he got all huffy. He still thinks it is the only well built boat around- he is a good loyal customer. Guess I should have not told him it looked like a Meridian.

Tim, The picture was made on a very cold early morning when my boss in the red jacket near the Flag, was picking up his new toy. He bought the six months old boat used, with little damage at the bow.
As it's winter and no boating and I survived Friday the 13 Th with only one stupid thing happening, I like to tell this little story. It's about that dangerous day in life and an encounter made this summer in a Marina in a very old little town called Sloten in Friesland one of our Northern provinces.
Yesterday I lost euro 300 because I let me talk in by the Pro to buy a new driver at the Golf shop and while paying some thing went wrong and after 3 attempts the card was blocked. But all went well they gave me the driver and let me pay for it by tele banking. We had a couple of beers in the clubhouse and when the wife got home she had closed a deal she was working on. Isn't this a bit (in a more modern way) the perfect life style, I admired so much by African tribes?
Last summer on Holidays we decided to visit the town of Sloten we didn't the year before. We got a place in a slip next to a boat that looked very similar to the boat in the picture at the link in my other post. During the after noon we had a lot of dock talk with the really nice owners and I asked if his boat was built by Verhoeven the shipyard my boss his boat was built by. The Guy smiled and asked me why? Do you know Verhoeven? I told him about the Boss's boat and he said no, but it's built at the same Shipyard Verhoeven uses. Verhoeven buys the body and than they built and finish the boat according to the wishes of the owner. So actually your Boss his boat is about 3 meters longer but the design is the same. He asked me if my boss had the ship repaired. Looking at my face which must have been wondering all over he told me he knew the former owner very well and had drunk many cups of coffee and beers in the boat during the time it was built. I told him that it was repaired and I assisted by bringing the boat back to her home port.
He also told me that the guy absolutely could not handle such a big yacht and if all was repaired well it would be a steel for my boss to have. My boss told me he had met the former owner on his boat as he, the former owner has ordered to built a new, even bigger boat and wanted to see the interior and made some pictures. So probably one year from now there will be a perfect yacht available for those who can spent more than a million of our present Kazukis. Sorry to say but if this occasion may arise, I will have to pass as the national lottery with 20 million as first prize, only brought me euro 8.50 :D
So you see it's indeed a small world we live in.

Roel;
Sounds like you're adpating to the fast-paced life of the retiree very well. I'm sure with a little practice... these really dangerous parts will seem easy :)

Joel,
Thanks for the story, I to have a story of a vessel that was purchased by my Dad in 1965 and I discovered in Gig Harbor a year ago. It is a Art Monk Senior designed 52ft twin screw tri-cabin the "Glacier Bear" I have personally not seen it since it was reportably rebuilt from the waterline up in Port Townsend WA. Oh the memories that I have aboard her as a crew mate in Ak as a young kid.

we had a drill meet in University Place on Saturday and no rain all day. Actually sunny a lot of the day. Even had Battle ground HS at the meet. They did good BTW...
