Wow, it is a fine to throw back any striped bass over 4 pounds in Lake Powell and no daily limit... current record is 48#11ozs... most are in the 8-12 # range.... this WILL be fun!

Sounds like it. You'll have to get your wireless working good so you can send us updates and pics.

I remember watching one of them fishing shows a couple years back, taped at Lake Powell. The striper fishing was unreal, and the hosts were giddy as school girls. Hooking fish eventually became too easy, so they had to try something more challenging. The object was to cast a surface lure within a few feet of the bank and retrieve it fast enough that you DIDN'T catch anything.

This proved much more diffucult. Imagine a herring ball churning at the surface...but instead of herring, they are stripers averaging over 18" in length...all fighting for the lure at the same time. The hosts would see the school, cast away from them and reel in like mad. The school would tear after it, roiling the water, and one would slam the lure each time.

At one point, the hosts encouraged one of the film crew (who are rarely/never seen in the edited footage) to pick up his fly rod and have some fun. Fun stuff, as stripers like to think salmon don't know how to put up a fight. Several broke off before he was able to bring one to the boat.

Always wanted to get down there to experience it myself.

Are the striped bass edible? I mean really edible, not like carp.

Randy, yes they are edible. They taste great too! They are a grayish white color though when cooked due to the amount of oil they carry. But they are tasty and I like the fatty taste like a good fat Copper River salmon... hmmmmmm hmmmmmm hmmmmmm!
