I have a Garmin map276C and I also purchased city SelectV5 and Blue Chart V6 (with 2 unlock codes) I have this softeware loaded on my desktop at home and downloaded to my Garmin 128meg card(in the HH)

I decided I wanted it on my Laptop so I could have it more handy on the Tolly, Well I was able to load Mapsource no problem (fresh install) after my Dell hitachi 60gig hard drive died) I purchased a new 100gig drive and when I tried to load the Blue Chart Software the Software would not auto start from the combo CD/DVD writer?

I have not yet been able to get through to c/s at dell?

I would purchase the updated version of City Select for $50 but it requires that it see a "current version" version of the software?

Anyone with similiar problem, and or a resolve?

The "autostart" issue should be pretty simple. Most software writes a small entry in the Windows System Registry that keeps track of whats been already installed. This is what prevents it from asking to reinstall everytime you insert the CD to use the program.

To reinstall, sometimes this causes problems. The quick fix is to go to "My Computer" (or Windows Explorer), and 'Right-Click' on the CD icon where you've placed the install CD. Then select "Auto-Run" from the pop-up menu you'll get. That shoud start the CD install.

City Select should see Garmin Bluecharts as it's "eligible upgrade path" too. You'll just have to get that installed first I'd bet.

SS,

That is exactly what I figured too? Unfortunately it seems that the Software wants to see a "CD" drive and for some reason the software doesn't see my dell installed CD rom drive.

Someone suggested I map the CD rom drive on my Desktop as a Network drive and try loading the software from there. I am convinced all this has something to do with the copywrite protection.

Can you see the contents of the CD in the drive? If so, you can open up the autorun.inf file and figure out what program its loading and just load it dirctly. The Garmin Bluecharts CD isn't copy protected in any way though (just the serial number matched at Garmin where they generate the codes)

I don't think its a copy protection issue. You have the right drivers installed for your Dell? You know they have a very good software update site. Pehaps the drive insn't being seen by windows?

SS, you bring up a good point about the driver for the cd player. I am not sure if I did update to the latest as it worked to reinstall XP from the "disk" that Dell overnighted to me (don't send the OS with their machines anymore) I did try to run the Inf from the garmin folder to know avail.

Correction---the blue charts unlocked fine into "mapsource". It is the 'City select' that won't load?? I will try some more tomorrow. Might have to take a run to the marina on Wednesday as they are calling for as low as 10degrees in Olympia (yikes) I do have 160 gallons of water aboard and only one heater in the engine room (on a thermostat) and a couple of those little air dryer heaters in the rest of the boat.

Not to worried about the house, but it would make a heck of a mess if I froze and broke a fresh water line in the Galley!

Nice pictures of the snow at your place!!!

I just looked on the garmin site trying to find something for ya. It says the Mapsource City Select comes on a DVD? maybe that's the trick? If your drivers fo XP aren't correct, it may think it's only a CD drive. I had an issue on this laptop in a similar thing. Updated the driver through Toshiba and all was well again.

You want a copy of that Clone CD program? It will allow you to make an "image" of the CD, and then you can "mount" the image rather than the disk itself. I've used it to run some other software that I've had problems with. Nice thing is it's MUCH faster because it runs from a "virtual drine" rather than a slow CD.

Lemme know.

SS,

I think the Newer Version of the S/S software does come on a DVD, Mine is 2003 vintage CD. I will look for latest driver in a few and get back to ya.

Thanks,

Tim

PS: did you ever put a L/T mount in the truck?

SomeSailor

I've actually got a 14" LCD mounted on a RAM mount. The PC is (well actually I've got it out right now) under the back seat. :)

It would be easy enough though. Ya gona put one in?

SS,

Ya I still would like to mount one. The mount that Ram sells, the one with the adjustable sides is pretty clunky though? I did hear that they were making one with a built in powersupply. My next purchase for the truck is going to be a good size inverter (any suggestions?)wiring configuration?

I've got the Coleman 1700 in mine. It'll run a full-sized PC and display. It'll also run grinders and 500W halogen lights. I ran 4/0 welding cable from the starboard battery and frame grounded it with 4/0 as well. It's overkill, but I didn't want to deal with voltage drop.

We should make you a custom laptop mount. I have a neighbor who's a Sherriff. Their laptop mounts are nothing special. I'd woory about a laptop screen vibrating all the time though myself. They're prone to cracking around the hinges anyhow. That's how my last three have died. :(

SS,

We could use the Ram support mounts and I am thinking of using some Memory foam between the mount and the LT, to absorb/dampen the Vibrations?

Say I just got off the phone (15min que_ with Garmin, seems that the City Select software requires an "installation CD" that is seperate from the C/S set of two? They have a work around that I am enclosing (for anyones benifit)

Evidently the Setup. exe is on this CD also resides in the program CD but without a path to it it won't auto start.

---------------------
There will be times where the normal setup will not complete or has errors during the setup procedure. Here is a process you can follow and should allow the installation to run from the hard drive. If your customer has enough hard space, he can copy the contents of Disk 1 and Disk 2 (not the Setup CD) to a folder on his Hard Drive, then go to that folder and create a shortcut to the SETUP.EXE file. Open the properties of this shortcut and add a space and then /zgarmin to the end of the target line so it looks like
this:

../setup.exe /zgarmin

The ../ represents the entire path line, of course. Then apply the changes to the shortcut and run the shortcut. This will allow the program to bypass the Setup CD and should allow the customer to install the program. Once installed, then the folder can be deleted, allowing to free up the hard drive space once again.

This process should work with most all locked products and in cases where the setup cd may be missing or defective.

It was 24 this morning... but up to 57,7 on the sunny side of the house now.

Damned cold in here though. :)

It was cool here this morning, not quite cold enough to freeze the kahunas off a brass monkey, but enough to be described as "nippley" as stated by Chevy Chase in the movie Christmas vacation. Great movie, classic line. Hope it warms up for the last weekend in Feb. I've got a 3 day fishing trip on Lake Chelan planned.

Say has anyone used the Google earth link from Garmin Mapsource? My buddy down here says it works, but when I hit 'View' on a waypoint my puter has that feature greyed out? (I have downloaded google earth) Do you have to have the "Plus" payed version?

Tim

Ah, figured it out, just load the waypoints in mappoint, and then view in google earth, (open Google earth and wa la all the Mappoint waypoints are listed in "my places" it also has all the Saved Garmin Routes!!! Now with the Verizon EVDO card, and a laptop, connected to my GPS, we will have aerial photos of the route, advance photos of Marina's, Ferry Routes and likely a shot of Spud, traveling at the speed of Light to the next fishing hole!!!

Ok another puter challenge.

I found one of my new software disc's had corrupt info on it (DiveRite logging software) called the company and they offered to send me the program in a .zip file by email.

I gave my address and then waited, no file, called and they said it "bounced" (blocked by server) I thought hmm? with a little research it appears that Windows XP home edition SP3 with all current updates and running MS ofc2003/outlook for email might be blocking attachments to include .exe and .zip files????

Do any of you guru's out there know how to check this out 'specifically' in the windows security setting???

I GOT THE FILE FINE WHEN SENT TO MY HOTMAIL ACCT

THANKS,

Tim

ZIPs and EXE's can't be unblocked from within the program itself. You need to do some registry editing to do that. Great idea by Micro$oft. That's why I use Thunderbird. :)

Numbknots

SS,

I suspected that after doing a little Google searching. So much for .ZIP being fast easy and a common place tool! I used my hotmail account to retrieve the file and said, once again, oh well.

I do see the reason though as seems alot of the new Virus's are attaching .zip file names now.

thanks again

Tim

SomeSailor

Its more to do with the fact that Windows will open a ZIP file as a compressed folder natively now. So... Grandma gets an attachement now... as a ZIP self-extracting archive... and it can write files anywhere it wants to. Replace the right files and you're in there.

I can show you how to make the registry changes if you want, but its not a simple menu driven thing.

SS,

thanks, I got the software through hotmail, If I need be I should be able to have it sent to my webmail server and then down load it directly to my computer HD.

sure wish the virus writer terrorists could find something else to do, like shoot each other!!

Kind of late to reply, but if you have trouble receiving those restricted .zip or .exe files with Microsoft Outlook just ask sender to rename file and change it's extension. So file.zip should be renamed to file.zip_ or something like this. Rename file back after you receive it.
If you ask me blocking unsafe file extensions is rather stupid but it is done because there are even more stupid people who start AnnaKournikova.vbs files received in email.

Neah... I just like to be able to go flying for a few hours in the morning. With weather like this I can get a few laps in and be home by noon. It's gorgeous out there today.

Took the old U-Can-Do down from the rafters and dusted her off. That Saito 100 is such a nice motor, and there's nothing like hearing it roar across the back stretch in a knife-edge. :)
