Say guys,

I have a La Crosse WS2010 weather station on my Tolly (wireless) works pretty good. I am looking to install a "good" station here at the ranch.

Do any of you guys have one, no people that do, etc? I really like the link to personal weather stations on WX underground and others as it makes it possible to do our own forcasting.

I don't want to buy junk, but don't want to buy overpriced stuff either.
I am particularily interested in being able to monitor the data from my Computer/link to the intenet and be able to then see it from anywhere I have a connection.

Looks like the "Davis" stuff is pretty good? thinking of the Davis Vantage Pro 11 http://www.ambientweather.com/61wivaprowis.html

Whats ya all think?

Tim

There are some good ones out there. They start at around $200. You'll need to get one that is compatible with the Weather Underground feeds. I was just looking at the ones they have at BestBuy. They're made by Oregon Scientific and support the data feeds.

I always thought it would be fun to have your own location on the net. :)

Hi Tim,

I have a one wire set up for wind and temp. My son is working on a rain gage for me. It is his project number 247 with my name on it. I have never had a reason to read our weather from another computer. My son has read it from his computer, so it can be done. I think that it has been hooked up for about two years now, and it is still working.

Fred,

Thanks. I really think it would be nice to see what it is really doing for wind/rain/sun up hear on the hill. I hope to one day spend more time away then here?

Mowed the lawn today and you would have thought I was training for the winter olympics!

My cows got out last month. The did a good job of mowing the lawn and Linda's flowers. They also added a little fret and lots of tracks as it was when the ground was wet. If you want to use them, they would love to mow your lawn too. It is only about five miles to lead them down the road. They could mow five or ten other lawns on the way.

Fred,
I may take you up on that! If I can get the moles trained to put the holes and mounds in a straight line I won't have to dig for the sprinklers either!

those freckin moles are a pain... The only thing I found that worked besides the shotgun or giant smoke bombs approach, is to spray the mole stop stuff using the hose... works for about 3-4 months and then I respray... really keeps them at the edge of the grass very well...

Its called Mole Stop and it is made by Spectricide. It is a 32 oz green plastic bottle that hooks to your hose and you spray it on the lawn. It covers 5,000 sq ft per bottle. I use that stuff due to my dog and this stuff is not poison... smells like deer turds until it drys on the lawn... but it works. The bottle says it will last for 2 months but I found it works twice as long in the spring summer fall... the moles leave immediately and I pound the mole tracks in the lawn down to nothing...

Besides the neighbors are beginning to talk when I am out in the middle of my lawn sitting on a vinyl chair with a Cup of Coffee and a Shot Gun!

Doug-- how do you know what deer turds smell like? I've stuck my fingers up many deer a--holes collecting fecal samples for parasite load determination, and I've done rectal palpations on no less than 50 anesthetized cow elk to determine pregnancy, but I don't recall the smell of their turds. Now doing a rectal on an ol' milk cow on corn silage is an unmistakable, unforgettable odor.

Tim,

You try the mole stuff and then let me know how it works. I got some pills that you put in the holes about 30 years ago that worked. When I went back to get more of the stuff, they said that they could no longer sell it, EPA of something. The shot gun works, but you have to see them working.

Brad,

I think you are right. Yesterday's weather forcast was that in the afternoon
heavy clouds would come in from the South and would bring rain.
So when a friend called that they were in Amsterdam on a fair, all and only about France, bought some nice French wine and specialities, so they wanted to come over and share them with us. So we decided to skipp the plan for a round of Golf.
During the afternoon no clouds were seen on the contrary a pale sun was shining and it was alomst perfect weather. Not one drop of rain!

So I stick to what a cab driver at our first time, on the road from Denver to VAIL said, when I asked about the snow forcast, "You never can tell, those guys are like politicians, they never speak the truth! " :D

Fred,

I have had some success trapping moles, just not the ambition to get after it (among other things) they were staying in the area that was field grass and weeds (manicured to an even height) Now they have me P#$sed as they are invading the 7500ft of new hydroseeded lawn!!! as for the weather gauge, just another gadget I always wanted.

Say was that fire the other night close to your place??? Darn I hate to see a home go up in flames, such a trajedy when family heirlooms are lost. (not to mention the potential for lose of life)

Hi Tim

Most of the time I can get them moles with a trap. But I have to work at it and keep after them. I did not see or hear about a fire. A house fire is always sad. I was with Fire dist 3 for 19 years.
