View Full Version : Outboard impeller replacement

Finally took advantage of the free time this weekend to build an outboard rack for the garage to hold both of my kickers. Actually have enough room for a third on there. :D Wife doesn't like the thought of this.

Anyways, was tinkering with the 1982 johnson 9.9 LS i picked up off ebay last spring. Only started it once and it didn't run too well. Replaced the plugs and removed some of the air intake parts yesterday and was spraying carb cleaner everywhere i could (all entrances to carb) and she started running well. Didn't get any water coming through the '**** hole' so had to shut it off. Ran up to Harbor Marine and bought a new water pump kit. Thanks to the internet and pugetsoundanglers.com i found detailed instructions on how to replace the water pump on my motor. Got it on last night around 9.30 and was sooo tempted to fill the bucket up with water and test it. :) The flow tube was full of junk and most likely the cause but I replaced all the parts anyway.

Mentioned to the wife that I could be one of these guys on craigslist and buy motors not running and fix and sell. She got all stressed out so i guess that means no. :(

Good on ya for diving in and getting the kicker running!!! Those little fellers are not very complicated, it is the new stuff with the computer controlled ignition and f/I that get complicated, (kinda like the cars/trucks we drive) Most O/B's don't get any maintenance, sit in salt, and the fuel seperates and turns to varnish and minerals and the cyclinders rust, rings freeze and water pumps take a set. With a few tools, lots of patience, an investment in a few OEM service/parts manuals, a mechanically inclined guy can have a blast during the winter months and (relieve the pressure) of not being on the water!!

PS: note: l Some ittle Mercs and others don't open the pee whole water path until the thermostat opens, and in cold water that can take a few minutes (and a fairly good RPM.)

Thanks for the reply. I have now removed the thermostat housing to find there is no thermostat! Previous owner not only busted off one of the housing bolts, they didn't bother to install a thermostat. I am off to get one today and will use sealant where the broken bolt is.

How familiar are you with Johnson OB's? I ask because i am now getting nice flow of water from the 'indicator' that is mounted near the entrance of the water into head, but not getting anything from the smaller water/exhaust hole in the housing. Found a hole next to where the thermostat is that was clogged with sealant and figure that might be where the water would flow from?

I am not familiar enough to give you specific advice. I use an IR thermometer when I work on one to see what the temp really is. If you poke around the net and do some google searches you might find a "water flow diagrahm? Hey magic or others might know as well.

This is the site i found for the 9.9/15hp johnson motors: http://www.pugetsoundanglers.org/Fishing%20Info/Johnson%209.9_15.htm instructions are towards the bottom. It was the easy part. Getting the water cover off to access the thermostat is a bloody job for big hands.

There is more specific information on that site than there is in the repair manual that i wasted $28 on. Only thing i need now is the owners manual, think i was given a copy of it when i bought the motor.
