Let's build one... :)
Been itchin to try out some ideas. Little bit of 1.5" heavy wall aluminum tubing and we're in there. :)
Even if you buy the head commercially it'd be an easy project.

Mike knows - Harbor Freight has great deals on engines/motors.
Built a few and sell em! :D

Briggs and Scrapiron...I've bent some rollcage tubing for several guys building pullers.

I highly recommend 2" schd 40 instead of 1 1/2". Seen the lighter ones bend.
I have a Safe-T-Puller electric that is really great. $$$$$ but it came with the
boat! :D

What would it cost?

Been too busy to reply, I wonder wherer a guy could get the shiv? sp? Thanks for the feedback so far. My electrician has the davit I think he will part with. Procuring the engine and shiv and some easy fab and were there! One month to do it in. Season opens may 6th! :D :D :D

Harbor Freight has some great deals on B&S motors. The easiest way would just mount a large shieve on the end of the davit and and then fake the rope onto the deck:
Lots of places to get sheaves.

Ah yes, bringing in the sheaves... We will come rejoicing!

I always thought a pulley with power tapped off the hydraulic trim pump or an engine-driven aux pump would be sweet. :)
Those hydraulic sheaves are sweet and the additional plumbing would be straighforward enough.
Got a buddy owns a hydraulic shop... ;)

The gas engine version needs to have a geared motor with horizontal shaft, doesnt it?

Having used all three (gas, hydr., elect.) for sport and commercial I wouldn't use anything but electric on a recreational boat. It's just so clean and quiet compared
to the others it ain't funny. Hydraulics work on big commercial boats just fine
as you've got room for all the equipment and don't have to worry about getting
your pretty white boat dirty. The gas engine rigs are just a pain in the ass and
horribly noisey.
Electrics are just too easy!!
For what it's worth,

Ok, the electrician gave me the schedule 80 alum davit. :) Now I'm thinking electric. Good advice. Gas would be ok too, but I have lots of ac and dc on the boat. And quiet is good! Then you can hear the shrimp floppin in the pot! I need info on the equipment requirements. Starter motor? then we can use it to winch sailplanes in the off season. :D

Mine is a Safe-T-Puller made here in Port Townsend by Quality Products Northwest.
I don't think they have a web site as they sell thru dealers. It is a reliable, powerful unit.
But a bit spendy. I think the power head goes for about $300.
Here is a link to another 'local' unit:

I suspect that if you are building your own davit that you could purchase the
power head from them.
A starter motor will burn up in this service; they are not intended to run for long
periods of time and draw way too much current and go way too fast.

Lots of 12V motors you could use. If you look at most, there's a simple bicycle chain gearing setup inside the power head. They've done it the easy way by enclosing all of that inside the lower cavity of the davit.
Turning a sheave from a disc of aluminum plate would be easy enough. Chuck up a plate in a lathe and go for it. You could probably find one in the 12"-16" variety in a simple pulley from a hardware store. As long as the rope pinches on the way around it would work fine.
I'm game if you wanna play with a design.
The davit is the easy part.

Thanks Mike and Pete and co., I will be getting the davit tommorow am. Seems to me that the electric ones have no base and just hang on an eyelet with the pulley mounted on the side. Havent searched the net yet for pictures of a design. It will be a fun project. Mike I would love to have a hand. I would gladly help you resurect your railing in a bit of work swapping. :D I can machine any parts we need. Maybe you can help us sleigh some shrimp in edmonds when it opens if your interested. We did very well last year.

I always thought a hole cut in a gunnel... with the davit pole extending down to a pad on the hull down below soewhere would be great. It would be pivoting and and easy to convert to a beer holder when not in use. :)
If you're serious about building one up, lemme know. I think it would be a fun project. Using a chain drive off an electric motor would be easy and could all be contained in the crook of the davit arm. Make sense?

Im very serious, these are prawns were talking about!! The davit is here now. Your idea about the gunnel is brilliant, im not sure why A. I didn't think of it, and B. why haven't I seen it done that way before? Great solution to one of the problems I have. No room in the cockpit for extra crap plus its a cruiser, not really a fishing boat, and thats one less thing (the base)to mount to the deck. If we work together Mike, itll put you dangerously close to the seapuppy boat    (ten feet). Send me a phone # and lets do it! The ace line hauler seemed really slow on the retrieve, hope ours works better.
