Been to long and as Brad said "thought you were going to work on the Tolly?"
I went up to Oly and finished up installing and checking out the Stb. heat exchanger replacement. Got ambitious and warmed up both engines to change the oil (12qts each) Just as the port engine came up to reasonable temp I looked down at the Raw water pump and darned if it werent leaking through the seal like a river, (another project) Shut the sea **** off and plugged the inlet hose with a plug (added percaution) and removed the pump (Jabsco 777-9001 impeller pump)
Went ahead and removed the pump/ cover and mounting bracket, the impleller not bad at all, but the dern seal will have to be ordered.
Changed the oil/ Filters and then called it a day! Spent some time with another boater (old flying buddy) I hadn't seen in 10 years, come to find out he has a Canadian aluminum 42ft trawler that he is bringing back to life and is moored only one finger over!! I introduced him to the IBNW site and expect we will have another member real soon!
Now back at home looking for parts (anyone know the best source of supply for Jabsco pumps/Parts other then just the impellers??)
Have a great week, be safe

Tim, when you find out a source please post it. I have the Jabsco brand pump as well. I bought my impeller from Coastal marine in Seattle but there may be other sources. But if ya called them they may be able to help you locate the seal. They were high cost for impellers but if your in a pinch and want the part fast at least they can ship it to your house. Once you have the exact part number it makes it easier to find parts. I think a company called Johnson ?? makes after markets. But my guess if you tell Coastal the pump number they will give you the seal number and then you can make the choice.

Brad,
In the "spare Parts kit that came with the boat was a couple of impellers and a Seal kit. Until I get the pulley off and the cir-clips/shaft out I won't be sure they are right? I found a new pump on line for $235, I will call seattle suppliers today and see what I find. I think I will probably buy a new pump and parts both.
SS, looks like the pulley is just pressed on and keyed, hopefully I can heat the pulley and get it off with a puller and then reinstall by heating up the pulley and cooling the shaft/pump? (any suggestions)
Brad, Do you know the number for your pumps?

Hi Tim,
It sounds like you are also working on the boat and not boating. I found a bad cam a week or so back, when I was getting the boat ready for spring. The engine is now out of the boat and a part. It will have all new insides when it goes back in. I wish that I would have found the flat cam last fall when I put the boat to bed.

Fred,
Ain't that like it is? Guess that is one way to save on fuel cost :P

Tim, I see I missed a call this weekend....you must have needed someone to crawl down in the bottom and plug the hose ;) . I have a large variety of pullers if you need to borry one.

If you can find a piece of copper tubing you can tap onto the shaft... it'll sink the heat away in seconds. Heat the pulley and then she should slide right off.

Gene,
thanks for the offer of the puller. (I was warned that "no-one" makes the pulley any more so "be careful" removing it. I may see what it takes to have one machined out of aluminum?
I may take you up on it next trip North! I ordered a new 'replacement' pump from Fisheries in SEA along with the parts to rebuild (for a spare) the one I have. Good to hear you are getting caught up at the shop!
Brad,
I got some good information straight from ITT-Jabsco www.jabsco.com During my search (Jabsco suggested if Fisheries (NW stocking distributor) didn't have what I needed to try "Depco" http://www.depcopump.com/index.htm in Florida. I spoke to them and they had what I needed as well. Returning to Fisheries http://www.fisheriessupply.com/online/Jabsco.brand/mode/1/letter/J/N/4294873351/Ne/103/sID/444C1500104C3CFF/catalog_name/FISCO/act/A01/Ntx/mode+matchpartial+rel+Inactive/Shopby/Shop+By+Brand/Ns/P_Sort (by Phone) with accurate information as to what was what I found them to have all the parts I needed and as well they had the pump.
Needless to say I had to spend nearly a 1/2 a boat unit!

SS,
The pulley is flush with the end of the shaft and the other end (impeller end) I could get a copper pipe on? Wouldn't that draw more heat around the seals and bearing though? I will snap a photo of the set up tonight and email it to ya?

Tim, I do not know my pump number off hand. I did not know Fisheries carried the pumps, good to know. I should see if they carry fuel shut off solonoids for my motors, I need to replace the one on port engine.

Brad,
I think you will have to get the solenoids from a dealer (what engines do you have/specifics) I may have a line on them as last year I had to replace the one on my gen-set and I saved a lot of research?
Tim
Look at the coverplate on the pumps to determine the model (or possibly the side of the body?)

Gene, SS,
I got the pulley off the Raw pump no problem at all (supported the pulley from the underside and used my press at home (just a light interference fit) I will heat the pulley and freeze the pump when I re-install it on the new one (should be here tomorrow)
Thanks,
Tim

Tim, the part number is on the fuel solonid which I do not carry around. I just gave them to a fellow boater on the docks who also was going to investigate for me. I have Volvo's 71B's
Dealer wants around 300.00 bucks for them.
I keep tinkering and believe it is not the relay.
I adjusted the linkage throw and have it working when the motor is cold but them it seems to quit when things warm up.
always something you know.

Brad,
The fuel shut off circuit on "most" diesels is pretty straight forward as they either intergize or deintergize to control the fuel flow to the fuel distributor (type depending on the age/type of diesel.
Your situation sounds like potentially a "weak winding" in the solenoid? Depending on the circuitry/solenoid design, there is usually a relay that is infront of the circuit and possibble a 1) pull-in winding and 2) a hold-in winding.
Let me know if you want some more help trouble shooting the problem? The first thing to do is to trace the circuitry.
I had a similiar problem on my DD's and found out the problem was not the solenoid at all but was "corrosion" at a fuse block up-stream that was dropping the voltage to the solenoid. this is not uncommon (I found out) due to the fact that the "protection' side of the circuitry (up until the recent NEMA 2000 adoption, required fuses to be used to protect "Appliances" and breakers were only used to protect the "Wire". So it is quite likely that upstream on your navigator you have things like "ignition alarms" engine room blower alarms, etc--- often these are run all over the place to incorportate the "upper/lower" helm station ignition switches???
A accurate digital voltmeter can be real useful in testing this circuit. Mine was the fuse block under the "upper helm" station ------evidently the P/O never used those ignition switches to start the boat. (I don't either) I just wanted to know they worked when I purchased the boat?
Tim
Here is a link to some info on how a solenoid works if you are unclear on the subject (LOL) http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/magnetic/solenoid.html I include this so I could look smart like SS :P

Tim , thanks- I will try and find some time in the near future to do some wire chasing.

Got back up to the boat yesterday and was able to install the new Raw Water pump on the Port engine, fired it up and checked temps with the IR thermometer. Managed to also do a quick pressure wash of the decks.
Now if I can get back and actually take the boat out?
Tim
