How about a BBQ review. I am thinking about a BBq for the boat. Which do you like and why? A Magma, kettle or box type Magma or a Force 10. I have used the Magma box type and it worked good. Then there is the question of a large or small kettle. Any info will help.

Thank you,
Fred P...........

I've had the magma kettle party size grill since 1996 and think it is fine. Mine was on sale at the time. It stores pretty easy in its own bag. I glassbead the inside yearly to keep it looking good.

I think most of the other grills would be just fine. I like the look of the retangular Force but not impressed with the cost verses value at WM. Might be best to find out what level of stainless they are all made out of. Mine is not showing any deterioration so I am assuming it is a high grade ss. Once that has been determined, I'd probably go to ebay and search for the one I'd want.

I have kept the Magma from Go Aweigh and intend to use it again on the next boat... What I find nice on mine is it sits in one of my pole holders that is cainted over the water. I can select which side to use based on load and which side I am tied to the dock and which way the wind is blowing. I find that the Admiral does not take too kindly to having the cabin full of smoke...

We have the standard size Magma (II - with the hinged lid) and also the mount kit for the Fish-On pole holders. I like the fact that there are no loose parts to drop over the side, it heats instantly, and can readily convert to a one burner stove. Steaks, burgers, corn or eggs & pancakes, if it is not raining, I'm cooking outside. I like the idea of glass beading it to get it clean, since they do get full of crud. I may have to try that or something like it.

glass beading... if you are ever in the area or stop at Port Orchard over a weekend and I'm available, be happy to run it through the beader I have...

Several yrs ago I purchased a Sport Extreme Barbeque from a company in Vancouver. It is a wonderful unit. It heats very evenly. I baked a pizza in it last summer and it turned out great. I bought the picnic table stand, and made a stainless steel mounting arm that I attach to my teak handrail. It was alittle less expensive than the Magma's. Check out the website:

It is well built and easy to operate. The hinged lid is very handy and it stays lit even in a stiff breeze.

I have the same one as Randy above. – Sport Supreme party size.
It's been a great unit for the last 2 years and I like the grease tray, it's easy to clean out.
One advantage is the cost of the accessories. They seem to be less then Magna for mounts and covers etc.
BTW – these Sport BBQs, as well as the others, can really throw out the heat, so keep an eye on the temp or you might be making charcoal.

Thank all of you for the input. West Marine had the Magma 2 on sale. We like it very much. On our Chelan trip, we did all of our cooking on it. We din't even light the stove in the cabin. Now I need to put a Fish On mount on our deck at home, so that we can use it on dry land.

During our recent kitchen remodel, I brought the Magma Kettle 2 home and mounted it in the carport. For a month I cooked breakfast this way!

I'm happy with the Magma, except in one area: My regulator seems to have two settings: HOT and THE SURFACE OF THE SUN. Any tips or tricks on getting a nice low or medium flame with these? To cook my morning eggs, I had to turn the stove on and off. I got pretty good at this, actually, knowing just how long to leave the fire on to get my fancy All-Clad skillet up to egg-cookin' temperature.

What is glass beading?

We have the standard size Magma Kettle, but the newer version. All we've ever done is bbq'ed on it but my inlaws have purchased the wok accessory and a couple others. We like it. I wish it held more meat but it serves us well.

We have the Magma Newport and love it. Cooks well and can even use as an oven for cookies and biscuits with the optional cutting board tray (it stores inside).

Ok, this thread brings up a good subject. We have a regular camping gas stove that we are planning on bringing on the boat with us. We plan to use it a lot out there. Is there a difference in our stove or the one's you are all talking about?

Depends on whether or not yours runs off propane or the liquid. The Magma's run off propane either the little bottles or larger cannister. We used to carry a Coleman white gas camping stove on our 21' but decided against it as we didn't want to have a flamable liquid on board. Currently we have a butane stove as a backup on board.

Propane. So we are ok with that kind of stove on our little boat?

Propane is heavier than air and can dangerously accumulate in your bilge area. I would never use a coleman style propane stove in my boat for safety reasons. The stove below is safer because it uses non-pressurized alcohol. I have the Origo single burner alcohol stove and I like it a lot. Coupled with a propane BBQ that is mounted outside of the gunnels and you have a pretty good cooking setup.

So I always need to make sure the bilge fan is on when cooking, right?

Not necessarily , just be out in the open not in the cuddy. And don't have any propane in the cuddy.
