I just went to the Tacoma boat show and found these crap pots (http://www.stow-b-low.net/).
Kinda expensive, but real cool for saving space when stored.
They are selling them at the show for $119 ea, or 2 at $218.

Wow those are indeed the ticket! :D

I saw them at the Seattle boat show, similar price. As they are made of what looks like PVC tubing, they are VERY light. Expect to add weight to them to keep them sitting upright and staying on the bottom.

Special note: they were also selling weights at their booth. Hmmmm....coincidence?

The design is more complicated than it has to be. Certainly worth the bucks they are charging for those... I'd add sinkers inside the bottom tubing... Maybe pour a little fine concrete into them? Enough to keep them upright when deployed...

How do you removed the crabs from inside the pot? Untie the rope at the top of the pot?

I remember seeing these. As I recall, they came with some lead weights attached to the center post. They were really slick, but at that cost, I would rather go to Seattle Marine & pick up some stainless folding traps. The cost was a little too steep for me.

I saw some circular collapsible traps at the Seattle boat show. I think Fisheries Supply had them. The looked pretty cool but very light. Since they fold up so small they would be easy to stow away somewhere instead of having them lashed to the bow railing. Did anyboby else see them? or have any of you used them? I was wondering how they would hold up. If I remember they cost around $150.00 and for that money I would want them to last a while.

I've seen those circular stainless steel ones and they look cool. Collapse down very small... I might bite the bullet one of these days...

I like that collapsing trap! Kinda expensive but just one would probably be
enough for cruising.

We have two of the heavy 3' dia. commercial type traps we use locally but
they're just too big to carry on a trip unless lashed to the fore deck.

That collapsing trap would be just the ticket!

Thanks,
Pete

Pardon me for resurecting this old thread, but I had an observation that I thought I would make.

I got one of these pots back at the Tacoma show and it's sat in my garage since then. The other day I was playing around with it and realized that it doesn't have a cotton "escape cord" on it. I don't think that the poly line counts as a cord that will disolve if the trap is ever lost, so I think this would be illegal to use in Puget Sound in it's current configuration.

I haven't bothered contacted the company about it since I'll probably just make a hole and retie it with my own cotton line, but it got me to thinking.

Good catch! That could get expensive if WDFW agents were curious about your new pot. Would really suck to be the proud owner of a new pot that landed ya a $250 fine.

I'd contact the company and ask them why they are producing illegal pots. Seems a DesMoines, Washington company should know the local regulations.

Reminds me of those traps that you cast out with a rod. Seemed like a pretty cool deal, until everyone found out they were against the law. Seems like a pretty easy fix would make them legal here.

Several years ago I purchased one of the little crab snares. It's a little bait box with several attached nylon line snares. It looked like a gizmo, so I purchased one. After reading the WDFW regs I learned it was illegal. I don't think it's illegal in BC so it still be be of use when we head north.

anybody bought either of these and had success yet?

I purchased the Flex Fold Trap at the Vancouver Boat Show ..... I was a bit skeptical at first ... BUT ... we really wanted to carry a trap with us while cruising. Traditional traps are just too large to carry on a 25' cruiser. Well I have to say the trap is pretty awesome, everytime we have used it we have had at minimum 3 keepers (Sidney area). The only thing that is a touch challenging is when you catch some really large crabs.....getting them back out of the doors is fun!

The flexfold trap doesn't look like it would be legal to use in Washington waters. There's no escape hatch.

It does have a cotton string area on the top .... on their website they claim to meet BC/WA/OR/CA fishing regulations

Here's a video we posted over on Navagear.com about the Flex Fold trap:

http://www.navagear.com/2007/06/folding-crab-trap-great-for-small-boats/

Both the Flex-Fold and the Stow-B-Low are local (well, regional) products. The Stow-B-Low folks are located in Des Moines, WA, and the Flex Fold folks are from Victoria, BC.

They were asking 169.00 for these at poets cove
I will wait for the boat show. For sure the collapsed size is right

Iron City in Victoria has them in two sizes for C$59 and C$79... I'd buy them there where they are made...

Is that the sporting goods store across the first river bridge from the harbor?

Yes that is the place I was thinking of. Next time I am back in Victoria I will definitely be going there again. Very cool place and you will need at least an hour to wonder around and look at stuff.

Mark of the Flex Traps has really put a lot of effort into creating a great trap. They're ideal for boaters who space problems (all of us??). They can be a bit tricky to fold back together but once you do it a couple of times you get the hang of it.
