I have this 9.9 that i bought off ebay 2 years ago. The guy didn't accurately describe the condition and last year i spent time replacing the water pump and thermostat and other maintenance on the power head so that it actually runs. Decided to drain the lower oil and there was a bunch of sealant around the lower drain plug. Found out why when trying to screw the plug back in...its stripped! The hole is stripped! Any ideas as how to repair without replacing the whole lower unit?

Yea, real easy. Buy a helicoil kit from your local auto or hardware store. Bring your plug to show them so they can sell you the proper size kit. You drill out the threads, tap and insert the helicoil and your done. Kit costs less than $30 and takes about 30 mins to do from start to finish (even for a newbee)...

I will second Doug's suggestion. Everyone here held my hand when I had stripped threads in the brass body of my raw water pump. They told me to use a Helicoil & that's what I did. Even if you have never had much luck cutting threads with a tap, the Helicoil system is very easy. You use the drill in the set, chase what is left of the old threads with the special tap, run the coil in & break off the tang - done & actually better than new. Do you have the housing off? If not, you will want to or at least stuff a rag inside to catch the metal chips.
