So after reading all the junk that is showing up here, I wonder if this new site was a good idea after all!!!!

Ted, I agree...and posted a similar comment on another thread.

It also made me realize that the clock is off on this software. Its showing these posts around 7 hrs later than when they were really posted..

Your time zone probably isn't set (mine was set to GMT).

Got to the user control panel (User CP link on the top menu), and from there go to 'Edit Options'. There's a timezone value near the bottom of the page.

Feel free to skip reading it Ted. Should I have gotten your approval before upgrading the software?

Geez... the whole reason I went through all this trouble (and expense), was to get us a better overall forum. I spent MANY hours importing all of your posts, user data, thread counts, and even passords and user names. I've personally gone in and adjust the timezone on users as they've come in.

You seem pretty put off by the new software.

Yes you should have asked me, if you recall I was one of the original money men of IBNW. And I saw nothing wrong with the old site. What I do see on this site is tons of junk and not a whole lot new from anyone except those that are complaining about it like me. So get off your mighty highchair and be real for a moment or two. Some of us are just boat people and not computer Masters like you are. And I bet most of the good old guys here don't have enough balls to tell you off like I do, but I do!

Yeah... but that $50 investment doesn't guarantee no change Ted. I'm sorry you feel that way.

Change is inevitable my friend. The features, security and useability of this software is far about anything we had before.

Nothing was lost... every post... every user... every part of the old board made it here. You didn't even have to change your username or password.

I think it looks great. Having used this software before, I am confident that everyone will adjust to it easy enough. Also, I know personally how much time it takes to set all this up, so THANK YOU for all of the work!!

Sounds like Ted's a little PO'd that someone 'moved the cheese'...

I like the new software, the look, and the usability.
Its basically the same now as BOC
Typically I only have a few minutes to scan posts. With all the spamming, its too much to sort thru. I quickly move on.
Ultimately, if its still getting thru the filters, I'll come here less.
Probably not a big loss to you guys, since I don't post a lot.
I try to post, but time is limited and there's only so much daylight in a day.

Geez guys... it's NOT spam. It's called an RSS feed.

You susbcribe to them and they watch the wires for news stories and such. They're not pop-ups, it's not "getting through" any filters, they're not tricking you into anything, it's not a virus.

They're just news. If you chose not to view them... just cast your eyes away from that forum. It's that simple.

You guys are certainly resistent to change. Even when it's for the better.

Thanks Steve...

I've got a copy right here. Have to admit I haven't read it yet, but I certainly will. When I'm done I may send a copy to Ted :)

In my other thread, I asked them to be filtered out.
You said simple enough, I won't seen them any more.
I still see them. Do I need to do something different? Cause they're still there. They're there when I select "new posts".

Since its an RSS feed, which I don't know anything about, can individuals be set up for that so the others don't see it?
There's plenty of news on the web, does it need to be duplicated here?
This is afterall, a boating website (with a few occassional tangent topics)
BTW, spamming is using electronic messaging systems to send unsolicited bulk messages.
Since you solicitied it, its not SPAM. But I didn't, so its still SPAM in my view.

Alright, I must be missing out here. I'm not finding any of this "spam" and like the format fine. Thanks for your work SS.

Don't know what to tell ya... you're welcome to that opinion I suppose.

Sorry you won't have the time to sift through it all. :(

Don't have to look at it? What, wade through each pile to see what's new?

In my view the best 'new' feature of this software, and the same over at BOC, is the 'New Posts' feature. With just one click I can have only the new posts with no open-scan-close of every freaking separate area on the board(s).

The RSS feed is filling the place with junk making the 'New Posts' feature unusable.

Why would we want all that junk from Craigslist and CNN? Craigslist alone has filled dozens of pages with junk!

If we want the news or the want ads we can go get them elsewhere.

Let's stick with PNW boating.

I say get rid of that stuff.

I appreciate the input Pete.

They'll slow down as the filters are refined. RSS feeds are nothing but news. I'm trying to get them setup to find things that affect Northwest Boaters, boating and local marine news.

It takes some time to get this settled down, but it will stay enabled. I shut down the Craig's list section (I only guessed you guys might be interested in seeing the cool boat stuff that passes through there).

I love it. At least I will once the "New Posts" feature doesn't fill with RSS feeds ;)

There will always be those who resist change, and inevitably add comments involving balls.

SomeSailor

yeah... the trick is getting the RSS feeds working... and then getting them to only pick up pertinent news items.

I've got CNN, and the Seattle PI searching for local boating related stuff now.

Ted's just being Ted and misery loves company.

Excellent recommendation on the software btw Strat. Works wonderfully, and the import even went OK. Didn't lose anyone or any posts.

I love the new software! It's the overwhelming of the 'New Posts' that I don't like.

Thanks for the explanation Mike. I'll just hold tight until ya get things settled down.

Coming home from the boat, Yes, boating and to my pleasant surpise I noticed the change. Mike thanks for what you have done. And if you feel the need to restitute some one his $50 I will be very willingly to sent you $ 50 to show who has balls!. Tedster my friend come down on earthy. I dodn't think I have to tell the history why IBNW was raised? Or is sales dropping otherwise I cann't understand nor appreciate what you wrote. You are over 50 years old so become mature! There is trouble enough in the world and we don't need any here.

Mike,

Shutting down the Craigslist feed seems to have been the answer. New Posts is now nice and clean!

I don't know much about how this stuff works but it seems to me that in this day and age (I'm showing mine a little here!) there should be a way to filter something like Craigslist so we could receive only the stuff we wanted. If 'we' could agree on what that is!

Or is the RSS an all or nothing thing?

I like the new banner at the top too!

What other neat ideas are in the wings? Or are you just gonna suprise us?

Well... even with Craig's List, it was nothing but the local boting section. I knew that several people (myself included) regularily cruise through there to see what's available. I'm deciding on the best way to approach that still.

As far as all or nothing... I have the filters set very conservatively right now. Unless Bayliner makes the CNN news wires, you'll not be disturbed with any RSS feeds.

Things in the wings... Banners that rotate to recognize certain events (birthdays and the likes). The user reputation feature is turned on, something to play with (check out the little scales). I'll be letting everyone know as things shift around. There are a lot of new features in this software. All of those on BOC are here (and many additional).

Take the time to play around with them, but gimme a break if they're not quite finished or working quite right. I can tell some of you are the types that brought home new VCRs... and then bitched for 20 minutes because the time flashed "12:00:00" 8)

Thanks Randy. Still got some changes to make and fine tuning to do, but so far so good.

The code running this forum is much easier to hack at and small changes can be made more safely. As the dust settles you'll see some of the little cool stuff here and there.

Sorry you're not getting supportive feedback, but to me it looks good!
