well it's time to spring clean my boat. I want to sanitize my fresh water system. What is the best way to do that.
I was thinking of adding bleach into my tank, and let it sit overnight and flush. What do you think works best?

That should work just fine... just don't get too heavy with the bleach so you don't have to deal with chlorine smell for long afterwards.

Just a couple of tablespoons is enough in a holding tank to kill anything. I usually just do that and then put the hose in the next day, turn the water pressure on low and then open all the sinks and showers. Let the system cyle a ciuple of times and good as new.

I'll agree, small amount of bleach. There is also a product called "Sweetwater" which helps freshen the taste of holding tanks. Gene

how long should the bleach be in the system before I flush it out? It won't hurt my water pump? right?

couple of tablespoons will not hurt the system.

I just dump some in the night before and then flush the next day.

Patrick...I would definately suggest following the link to Peg's procedure. We followed it on saturday and by the end of the night felt safe drinking the water from our tank.

If you leave fresh water (unused in the tank for any length of time I would consider installing a Cart. filter, they are inexpensive and work pretty well. I have one at the new house on the kitchen sink and the icemaker, it has two filters, one is a sediment filter and the other is carbon block.

I my 44 Tolly I have a OZone filter system that works really well, It is manufactured in Grants Pass Orgeon and they folks are really down to earth that M/S it.

Marine Sanitation in seattle is a reseller as well as ordering direct. They make several models.

I run unfiltered water into my holding tank from the dock and with fresh filters you can smell/taste nothing.
