Chipping away at the things to do on the new boat .... http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/happy.gif
Today my stainless antenna mount for the VHF radio came in, so I
went and installed it in the boat. I purchased the new Shakespeare
Galaxy series antenna - 5400 XT to go with it.

And we hope you used a little 5200 on the screws when you mounted the chrome base???

What is 5200 ?
First I drilled a small pilot hole, and then 2 other drill sizes to get
the diameter of the mount screws.
I was careful, no chipping on the boat finish .... 8)
The mechanic there gave me silicone to put between the mount
and the fiberglass. I used stainless bolts and stainless nuts with
nylon in them.
He drilled another hole in the stainless mount to feed the antenna
cable thru, and then I put silicone around that.
Hope I did it right ....

Sounds great. You can always use a bit of masking tape where you intend to drill and you should not get any chips... just don't pull it off really fast... OK, only joking on that last part...

5200 is the standard emergency tube of chalking you should carry to quick fix repairs

Comes in a squeeze tube also... that's the one you should have on board...

Silicone is not the best choice in this case.

3M 5200 is really durable caulking for below the waterline and bedding screw holes. They make 4200 for above the waterline. 5200 is really tough to remove later but works great. :D
