What does the reputation buttons mean, and how do you get them?

If you click on "Members List" and look at the columns there is a category called "Reputation" some have black buttons, some have green buttons and some have several green buttons. Just wondering what that is all about.

I don't really care about my reputation. I want to know how I get a promotion to something other than "seaman recruit" the pay sucks!

It's just a way of ranking someone's posts on the system. If you like a post, or think it's something you'd like to see more of... hit the scales and it'll bump the users reputation.
