Headed out last Friday afternoon and I went into engine room and noticed a quart of anti freeze in the drip tray under Starboard motor. So instead of going any further we made slip arangements at Bell Harbor, figuring mechanics would appreciate us being close and my pocket book would like the travel time .
I was able to reach a guy I had talked to in the past who came down Saturday morning and was able to diagnoise the problem. Problem was he would not be able to get seals and not work on the issue until late afternoon Monday, so we stayed at Bell for 3 days. At first I thought it was connected to a thermostat replacement I had done, but it was not. He had to remove a few parts off the front of the motor including water pump. It was just a silicon seal that had gone bad , but it was worth it to me to have the mechanic do this job instead of me. We cut our trip short and never made it to Roche, instead we hit Poulsbo on Monday night after he finished working on the problem, then off to Port Townsend for a couple nights . By the way, the new docks are great at Townsend, they also did a neat thing on the 70 foot docks by adding power on each end of the slip. So a couple 35 footers or less could share the same slip.
We were able to visit with my wifes cousin over dinner at Belmonts and also a few cold ones on the boat. After we left Townsend we headed to Des Moines for a fuel fill then spent last night in Gig.
I still have a problem with my starboard engine not getting warm enough. Dumb me I should have had the mechanic check out the thermastat housing when I had drained off the 7 gallons of anti freeze while at Bell. So looks like I will be doing that soon to check for erosion, he says I am by passing somewhere.
Anyway, we had a relax time even with the coolant leak issue.
Only crab I ate was at the restaruant....... oh well, maybe at the end of July better luck will be with us, oh, my wife through the banana's over board.

Hey Brad,

Sorry to hear about your abbreviated trip. Glad you didn't get stuck somewhere, though. Smart move to stay put and get it fixed.

Did you enjoy Bell Harbor? It is one of my favorites. I seem to recall you didn't care much for it.

I went up to Victoria last weekend. Stayed in Pt Townsend last Thursday night, a week ago. I agree, the new docks are nice.

We departed for Victoria at 6 a.m. Friday morning. Good crossing. Light wind and slight chop. Weather turned out great the whole weekend in Victoria. Our boat was stern to the Empress Hotel. Great spot. Lots of fun.

We crossed back Sunday morning at 6 a.m. Flat calm. Beautiful crossing with the sunrise. Checked in with customs at Port Angeles. Two agents, they gave me a thorough check.

Hit some rough stuff south of Pt Townsend early Sunday morning. Covered the boat in salt. Fueled up in Kingston. $2.69 per gallon, including taxes! I thought that was damn good.

A good, but short (and expensive) trip.

You going north again this summer?

Thanks for the update!

Hey Tony, you did make a quick trip, you had a Primo spot as well.
Bell was ok, we made the best of it. It is not one of my favorites, a little loud for me, but made for some good people watching while hanging out on the upper deck of the boat.
We are heading back to the Gulf islands around the end of July.
Paid 2.66 a gallon at Des Moines, it was 2.41 last Friday there, but it was a few boats deep in the waiting line so we got it on the way back down.
If the weather man is right, this 4th should be nice out on the water for all of us.

Brad, glad it worked out for you. Sounds like the fourth is going to be great. In the mid 90's here on the Columbia and I am sure great for you guys up north. We have five days planned on the water from the Vancouver Fireworks through the Portland Blues festival. Interested in if it is a thermostat issue with your engine.

I was hoping it was a thermostat in the first place, that is why I replaced it.
I am having the oposite of over heating, I am having trouble getting the temp up to 175. It reaches 150 at 1500 rpm after running for about 20 minutes. I can only reach operating temp if I run it harder and that cost to much coin on fuel. At 1700 rpm and where we cruise at quite a bit it reaches about 155 degrees, not good for a diesel.

you guys are about .50 cents cheaper on the water than around here in the gas station!

Ever thought about a restrictor valve Brad? You could install a bypass valve that would allow you to bypass an amount of the cooling water to keep the temps up. You're right about the temps though. Diesels need the heat.

What kindof motors did those have anyhow?

They are pretty much bare boat inside. Very light with a retractable centerboard so they can be trailered. I would guess the photo has a 9.9 on it.

From what i remember of them McGregor limits the 26'r to a 50 hp outboard.

I also thought they were pretty cool for what they are. Probably great economy with that long hull at displacement speeds.

my guess is it had to be at least a 50 to being pushing a boat like that and at that speed. Just looks fuuny though, but he passed me.

I'd bet they get pretty squirrely at those speeds. They're pretty pointy little boats. That's my kind of sailing though. :)

They are amazingly stable at that speed, you can even tow water skiers. They still are a morf but a darn good morf at that. Just don't try to win any sailboat races!
