View Full Version : Opinion Please...2002 Bayliner 2858 Ciera CB

Due to financial considerations I am going to have to sell my 381 Meridian.

A fellow in my marina has expressed interest in swapping boats and boathouses (he will make up the difference in cash). I will lower my monthly expenses and pay off some bills which is the main criteria. Even though the 2858 is smaller at least I will be able to keep my hand in boating.

My question to you knowledgable folks is what should I look for in this boat?
It is a 2002 2858 Ciera CB. Flybridge model with a single 350. I think it's fuel injected, not sure though, I'll find out. 300 hours.

It has a Bravo III out drive. Is this a good outdrive?

The boat is pretty stock, I think. It has a VHF and a small Garmin. I haven't looked at her real close. Anything else I should look at or for?

Also, what do you think this boat is worth?

Thank you for your feedback.

If you would like to call me instead, feel free. 253 255 6477

Thanks Again,

Tony

Hey Tony;

The 2858 is a nice boat. (stay away from those diesels though) :)

It's got a pretty nice sized fly bridge area. It held Bob, myself and Harry (NOT lightweights) very easily.

I would prefer the 7.4L in one, but they stopped offering those at about that time. The 350 Mag MPI supposedly has the same power of the 7.4 and better economy in the lower end.

Nice roomy boats downstairs too.

A swap would be nice if the numbers add up. Everybody wins in the long run.

Let us know how it turns out.

If the numbers work for you Tony it would be a pretty good move I think. Most of us with the larger boats end up taking a trade of some sort when trying to sell anyways. The boat your looking at would more then likely move quicker if you really needed to get out later on.

Sorry, cannot give much on the tech or performance side of things with the model your looking at. ya might do some comparisons on yachtworld for price matching in our local waters.

Tony, go here for a price check on the boats you are looking at plus what your boat maybe worth today: http://www.nadaguides.com/SectionHome.aspx?LI=1-28-0-5000-502-578-50250&l=1&w=24&p=0&f=5601
It is the NADA site and has excellent boat prices to compare. This is what we used to make offers for boats we were interested in. I'd list all the goodies a boat had and print it out, present the sheet to the seller and negotiate from there...
Good luck on your search. If you get to trailer it, let me know and we can head up to PT or Neah Bay sometime...

Yep, nice to be trailer trash once in a while... :)

Thanks for the advice, fellas. Good stuff. I'll let you know if the trade happens. I'm supposed to take the 2858 for a spin Friday.

In the meantime, I'm leaving Saturday morning for the 'Juans. Spending most of the week in the Gulf Islands. No definite intinerary, mostly meandering for a week. Doug, it looks like I'm coming back when you're heading out. I plan on spending the 28th somewhere in the San Juans before coming back Sunday. Give me a shout on the cell if you're in the area, 253 255 6477.

I'll keep y'all posted ("y'all", for Mike's <"Big Tex"> benefit). ;>)

http://www.nadaguides.com The key word here is "guide" please keep in mind that what is entered in that "guide" is an averaged price for the entire US. Now do you think that a boat in our good old PSound is the same as one that lives in Sunny California, or hurricane Florida, or polluted New York, or frozen Alaska....well they do! It is not the bible, just a guide. If it was a bible good luck on getting financing from a bank to place value for a loan....you would come up way short if that was the case and have to put way more down to cover the difference. Not my thoughts but rather my knowledge, I deal with it every day.

The prices I see are higher here than on the east coast. At least that is wht I have seen so Ted is correct. The guide is a little low... Go figure... they are made here???

We have reservations for the 28th and 29th but I think now I am going to try and run the boat all the way up on Friday the 27th (weather permitting) and make it a 3 night event. This will at least give me Saturday to do some crabbing. I miss the taste of Dungy.
We will have Terry and Lori aboard, our friends from Texas, pray for sunshine and calm seas .

Do I need reservations for Roche? Please let me know and then I'll contact from here in Hawaii...

Finished teaching leadership academy and got to write and narrate the graduation script. Nice rainbow over Aloha stadium the entire 45 minute Pass In Review. Nice mist once in a while too. Got some great photos of the parents presenting leis to their kids...

I found the 1-800 number on the internet and they are not taking any more reservations. They suggested I call requesting moorage near you guys when I get there. I will probably drop off a crab pot or two before coming in to dock... If I have the time, will bottle a few home brews before heading north...

I may also be at Roche by 27th if I get out of my meeting in Marysville earlyish... Launch as soon as possible and put some more hours on the new engine...

Brad, let me know what slip you finally get assuming you get there by 27th. My cell is 253-255-9679

no reservations for the 27th? did they say they were full? i have not made arrangements either for the 27th. I do not have a slip arrangement as of yet. I have made reservations in the past but I have never been given a slip until I hail the harbor master for one.
I came in late one other time on a friday, got in around 6:30 pm and I was given the last piece of wood on the out side breakwater that the US cutoms office is on. Hopefully this will not be the case this time.
Doug, I will take your number down and let you know when we arrive after we get settled.
If we do not make it in Friday it will be Saturday for sure.
Brad
ps, Doug your missing one of the best summer days back home. If we get lucky we will see a rainbow also. If we ever see light again.........

Homeboys,

I called Roche this morning. They're not taking reservations, like Doug said, however, they said that it shouldn't be a problem getting in. We'll be coming in mid Saturday morning, maybe Friday, but we're coming!

See ya on the 28th.

Brad, here is my cell: 253 255 6477

Ya , I called to and got same story as you guys but they said they would assign me a slip for my reservation the next day ( sat ) but would get us in on Friday if we showed, if we show it would be late day since we will be doing around 12 knots from tacoma. We will be there though for certain on Saturday. My boss and friend is also going to come with his Hatteras, I have only seen it once so i am looking forward to crawling around on it. Sixty one footer, older boat but what a boat it is.
Another friend of mine should be flying in some time Saturday, he is getting married earlier in the day and flying up to his boat that will already be on the docks, hopefully. They were going to try and get it up there this weekend.
Should be a fun filled weekend and lookiing forward to meeting you Doug and seeing you and your wife again Tony.

If we do make it Friday I will give you guys a ring once we get settled.

Doug, you should get a dock ok.
Looks Like I better throw a rack of Corona on board, plus lime :-)

Sounds like fun guys. This storm will have run though by then and the summer should be upon us again.

Doug;

Lemme know where you end up on the 26th. I'd like to stop in and catch up with ya and check out the new rig. Dane's taking his driving test that day at 1:20, but I'm off all day.

I would have enjoyed meeting you also, along with seeing and touring that new ride of yours.
Give us a trip report of Pleasant harbor, I have not been down that way since Chuck and I think his wife Judy owned it. I was wondering if it has improved since then.
The last time I was there it was so hot and no air movement so we left and went up to Ludlow. It was one of those times I had wished for AC.
