Can you folks tell me what the real world fuel consumption is of a 2859 with an Alaskan bulkhead? Both for the 7.4 litre and the 5.7?

Thank you in advance.

Nice choice Tony. I've always liked them over the 2858's myself. You thinking about going that direction now?

Still thinking about it, not real sure what to do. Right now I don't have to sell but I don't want to wait until I'm in the position where I have to sell now.

Hell, man, I don't know what to do.

The 2859's are very roomy and well appointed for a large trailerable. Nice thing is you can bring it home or to the shop to get work done (and out of the salt).

I'm leaning more and more towards another trailerable myself. Might start looking around once crude starts climbing in the fall. I'd love to find one that someone just grenaded their 7.4L over the summer. :)

We usually show about 18 gph on the Floscan at cruising speed. We typically run as slow as possible while staying up on plane, which usually works out to around 3400-3600 RPM. The only speedometer on the boat is the OEM version, so I'm not sure about the speed, but somewhere around 20 mph.

So I figure about 1.1 mpg. And it seems to track pretty close to that for almost any speed.

I really like the enclosed wheelhouse. One of our first trips in it was on a clear, cold, December day. I was sitting at the wheel quite warm and comfortable in shirtsleeves, with terrific 360 degree visibility. It wasn't until we stopped in Lake Washington and I realized that the swim step was covered in ice that it dawned on me just how cold it was. From then on I was a convert to the single enclosed wheelhouse design. I always feel pretty smug when I see someone go past sitting on the flybridge freezing with a heavy coat on.

Doug--What is size is your engine? 5.7 or 7.4? What is your boat's weight when loaded with gear and passengers?

I agree with the idea of a single enclosed helm. We've been on our boat when the temp is in the 40's. My helm/cockpit are enclosed (canvas) and the cabin heater (engine hot water) keeps the cabin and cockpit warm. When docked, I light the cabin's propane catalytic heater. Works great to keep the Admiral warm.

Tony, the book says 5.7MPI 25mph/15gph the 7.4MPI 25mph/14gph. That is full tanks safety gear, provisions, and four adults. I have two used ones here both with the 7.4's.

7.4 MPI engine. I have no idea about the weight. I think it's 7200 lbs without gear, but we have plenty of gear aboard, a Livingston dinghy on the stern, and we cruise with two adults and two kids. Probably tip the scales around 9500 - 10,000 lbs.

The published figures for the 7.4 (25 mph/14gph) sound pretty optimistic to me. I think the best I've seen, with a clean hull, fairly smooth water, and a tailwind, was maybe 16 gph and around 20 mph. But their definition of safety gear and provisions may be different than mine.:) I know that the basic fender and safety package sold by Olympic was about as minimal it could be and still meet the rules.

Just for clarification the fuel statement comes from the factory not Olympic.

Yeah, that wasn't intended as a slam to Olympic. Just an observation that the numbers probably didn't reflect real-world use. I recall that during our sea trial (3 adults, full tanks, safety equipment, but no provisions) performance was better than we normally see after we added enough stuff to safely and comfortably operate a boat around here.
