View Full Version : Outboard hoist?

I am thinking about a hoist to lift my outboard motor on and off the dinghy. It weighs 81 pounds and I can handle it ok but it would be alot easier to have a manual hoist that I could use to put it on and take it off. I have been online and I don't seem to be able to find anything. Do any of you have a hoist for your outboard or know of someone who does?

I just leave the motor attached to the dingy on an Adventure Marine swivel.

I thought about that but right now I have it mounted with the weaver davits and am pulling it up out of the water by hand. If I add the weight of the motor (another 81 pds) I don't think I will be able to lift it.

Thats what I do. :) I learned to get my wife to grab the bow line and it comes up much easier. Hopefully i will figure out a block and tackle to make it that much easier. Best part is not having to deal with storing the motor separate from the dingy.

Paul, Weaver sells a block and tackle type pulley that can be mounted in a variety of ways that makes pulling a dink with motor on a swivel mount very easy for anyone to pull up. They have it pictured on their website for details. That would be my recommendation.

I have one that I have been using for lifting our Honda 20hp onto the back of the inflatable. I put it together myself and it is easy enough to build. It is made mostly from aluminum and stainless parts, and bolted together. It is removable, and socketed into a vertical rod holder on the combing. My friend put an external tube mount on the back of his Carver, so that he could use it too. Hard part was sewing a harness for the outboard to attach it to.

Block and tackle for sure, no less then a double block . I put my own together
years ago on my 39 when I used weaver davits, think I spent around a hundred bucks for the double blocks and the sail line . My guess is you can still do for this price or less.

I can take some pics for you, other wise the parts list is as follows.
4 ft. 1"x4" Aluminum square tube. 1/8" wall
18 inch 1" x 3/32" Stainless flat bar
21 inch 1-1/2" OD Aluminum tube. 1/8" wall
18 inch 1" x 1" Steel square tube. 1/8" wall
One 2 inch roller , One single 1-1/2 tackle block, and One double 1-1/2 tackle block. All for 1/4" line.
When I got the Honda, I had to strengthen the upright post, so I just drove a 1x1 steel tube into the center of the round tube. If you started with a thicker wall tube, youi could probably not need this addition. The end of the arm was cut out in order for a roller to go inside the end. The line goes throught the roller and down through a double tackle and around a single tackle above, and again down and up to terminate at the arm. Used Sailing tackle from surplus.
A sailing cam block is used to hold the line when letting in or out.
Just bolt everything together. All this fits in larger Aluminum tube, which is mounted in a vertical flush rod holder at the top, and it goes down and bolts to the bottom of the space below. The friend that uses this also, built an external tube for the back of his 260 Carver (Gene's old boat) that is removable. Just use common sense when building it. If you really wanted to get fancy, you could have someone like SS (Mike) weld it out of Stainless. Mine weighs about 7 lbs. as it lays.
PM me if you need any more info, or want to see it in person.

Well i also got tired of lifting motors spent a huge amount of time online to find the perfect crane . Go to www.davit.com i bought the model 175 little crane it is nicer than the pictures show all stainless steel now. comes apart in a minute and lifts the outboard up and swings out to dingy. check out the site they make real nice stuff. When i ordered the owner took my order and i had delivery into Canada the next week. Everything in perfect order.

You know after looking at the pictures and the web site another thought occured to me. It just may be possible to take one of the crab or shrimp pot pullers and adapt it to duel purpose. I will have to give it some more thought but it seems like you should be able to change the pullies or at least the one at the end of a crab pot puller so it would function as a motor hoist and a crab or shrimp pot puller.

A friend of mine has this one and found it very well made and reasonably priced. He uses it to lift his dinghy to the back deck on his flybridge. 175# capacity if I remember correctly.

http://store.weaverindustries.com/merchant.cfm?step=4&pid=6 this is what I'm talking about, and leave the darn outboard where it belongs with a swivel mount for the outboard. :)

Well Ted normally that would work except if I do that the motor would extend well out into space on the side of the boat, plus it would be on the same side as the transom door. With the motor sticking out a foot from the side of the boat I would never be able to dock on the starboard side. Your suggestion is an excelent one unfortunatly it will not work unless I change the entire way the dinghy is mounted. And since the dinghy is mounted per the admirals instuctions in a manner that she believes is the easiest for her to access the boat, I don't think that is going to happen in the near future.
Now maybe if I told her she was going to have to lift the motor on and off the dinghy from now on.............. nope that would be a stupid suggestion.

Wow, do I like that St Croix removable system and I like the tow system too. Anyone see any prices on those systems? I did not find it on the site...
