Hiya Todd;

Need to get Roy's Pegasis graphic cut before I can get much further with yours but as things taper off towards the Holidays, I should be able to catch up.

Here's a draft:

Here's a draft:

Mike That looks good to me. Maybe a little closer lines from the top of the triangle to the lettering. Also, please no hurry. I know you're busy. I have lots of waxing to do now that Santa got us(what am I saying)~ME, some compound and waxes. My brother did get the Admiral, vinyl cleaner and Black Streak remover:lol: yesterday. That was funny.

One more thing, I made the original in black for the Embroiderer who made the Crew sweatshirts with logo on it for Christmas. I'd like to make the transom sign out of matching Navy and Gold which is on the boat now.
When you get caught up, I'll swing the boat by so you can take a look.

Volante. That's a great name.

The WN's look good. Thank you. Luke and I went and put them on already.
Once I get the rest of the boat buffed up and looking good I'll hire you for the Transom Name Signs............

Thanks again.

Hey Mike
I think I'm ready to get the name for the transom. I know you have tons going on, so what do you think. How are you doing?
Do you want to send me a PM and estimate cost?

Thanks

Just busy at work mostly. We're winding up over the next few weeks.

Here's where I left off. I still need the dimensions to get the proportions right:

That looks super. I can get you the dimensions so whenever you're ready you can give it a go.
The only change I would request is the inner triangle we would like gold metallic and maybe a change in the hailing port font.

It really looks good.

If you can make the Main part of the sign 14" high, (then keep your ratio)
then add the hailing port in 2" Palintino Linotype font, totalling 16" that would be perfect.

Also, if the part you have in light blue can be gold vinyl then it will match the boat's pinstriping.

Let me know what I'll owe you.

or, I know it's not Sans Serif, but the Hailing Port may look cool in the same font as the sign

Any thoughts Mike?

I'll cut them both ways for ya.

I got Ken's done last week and I'll get yours this afternoon most likely. Things at work have FINALLY slowed a bit. One of our two prototypes has redelivered and the other is at an MRO for a gear change, so we're on hold for a week or so before Flight Test starts.

No worries to me. He and I have been PMing for a couple of days. He didn't ever receive the old decal back (little thing about the size of a playing card) and he suggested I buy him a new one.

The old one was pulled off his boat and came stuck to a piece of paper in a plain envelope, so when I sent it back, I sent it the same way.

The guy just wants something for nothing and thinks his threats mean anything... they really don't.

I will be down there also. Please do me a favor and turn your radio on. I think I figured out the dsc calling. On your handhelp you choose the cahnnel first. On mine I think I turn to the cahnnel I want to transit to then make the call, it calls on 70 then switches you to the channel I was on originally. I want to test this if you are there. That is why I kep trasnmitting on 16 when we were testing it. That was the channel I was on. I will try a call when I get there. Probably about the same time as you.

SomeSailor

Sure thing. The sender (caller) is the one who selects the channel change. Yours jumped to the right channel everytime if memory serves? It was just the position that didn't report.

Sean and I played for a few minutes in Everett and it's a pretty slick feature. It would be REALLY nice for keeping up with where the dinghy is while the son's out crabbing or sight seeing.

I need to upgrade my chart plotter this winter I suspect :)

My position was sending but my vhf can recieve position but my chartplotter cannot read position from my vhf....looks lik an upgrade for me too:)...put it on the list. I think my only problem before was that I was not on the correct channel before trying the call. I was recieveing them fine. I also want to try out the group number.

We hung out for an hour or so while I re-spooled my downriggers. The cable had all corroded and became brittle so I spooled on all new stainless and terminal ends.

Eric's still got something going with his DSC and GPS communications. Still not getting a POS request back with data. On yours I got the time and position, but on his I get nothing back in terms of position or time. Probably something wiring wise.

Definitely a fun new technology.

Is it possible he has his bare ground not grounded to the GPS ground? My WM radio was very specific about attaching the bare ground to the GPS bare grounding wire... Not sure why they make it a big deal but???

Could be. The deal is the signal that NMEA-0183 uses is a "differential" voltage. It uses the signal ground (not boat ground) to get the signal amplitude right and you can get errors in the transmissions.

The worst thing is they'll be intermittent and difficult to troubleshoot.

Keep them separate. :D

I think that's why they want them connected to the same grounding block

SomeSailor
07-10-2008, 10:45 AM
Nope. EACH is on a reference ground. That reference is developing a "differential signal". This is the average between the two reference grounds, and the TX (+) signal and the RX (+) on the other box.

If it sees a high enough difference (nominal 5VDC), it'll sense a "differential" one or zero... and hence a digital signal is born.

It's a very simple protocol, but is tailored specifically for applications where you don't have a true "chassis ground" like you would in a car (like fiberglass boats). :)

SO... don't ground those together... or ground bond ground or safety ground on a common block.

SomeSailor

That will only work if you're talking two units that are tied to a common ground.

The signal reference is ground... but that is different for each device on your boat. Since you're depending on a piece of small diameter wire for ALL of your power and grounds, the potential is good you'll differences.

Add a device like a laptop, or shore power and the problem is even worse. These guys are all on floating ground... literally.

NMEA-0183 was never intended to be used the way it is, let alone try to interface it with RS-232 like we so often do.

If you don't believe me, measure the difference between some of your various hot leads on your mains... you'll see some huge differences. Only takes a "difference" of 2 VDC or so to confuse a TTL data stream. You can lose that much pretty easily on a fiberglass boat. :)
