Ok, I am not sure if this thread belongs here or not but I need some help please. This is my first I/O FWC boat so please bear with me. I am not sure if I did something wrong or I have a larger problem.
I went to the boat yesterday to clean and de-winterize it. I am not 100% on what I am doing but I thought I understood fine. I hooked up the flushing muffs to the outdrive, turned on the water and started the engine. If I understand this correctly once the boat reaches the correct temperature the t-stat opens and draws raw water in through the outdrive to cool the anti-freeze and flushes the old water (in this case the antifreeze that was in the heat exchanger) out. So it gets up to temp and I am waiting for the AF to flush out and nothing. It quicly reaches just over 180 degrees and my overheat alarm goes off. It didnt overheat or steam or cause any issues because of course I shut it right off. Am I missing something here? Was I supposed to keep the sea **** closed for any reason? Or is it likely that my impeller was stuck? The impeller was replace 40 hours ago. And the boat has only sat since 1-15-08.
Is there another intake?
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Wish I would've known you were down at the boat, I was down there both days this weekend.
You should get flushing water through the heat exchanger regardless of the thermostat. Was the water free flowing before you started?
Also... as you start the boat, watch the temps climb gradually and you should see the stat open at around 160-165 and the temp drop there, and then slowly warm up again to operating temps.
Was your system fully drained when they winterized? You refilled it right? You could have an air bubble on the engine coolant side that needs to work itself out.
I'm stopping by on my way home today. If you're gonna be around gimme a ring, I can take a look for ya.

What Mike mentioned about the air bubble is a good one.
Did you see water coming out from the outdrive at all?
This one is probably not the case for your boat but...
not sure on how the BII is set up with a 7.4 but my 6.2, the raw water intake off the BII was disconnected because it is too small. I had an addtional intake put in to take care of the amount of seawater required to cool the enigne.

Do you drive a blue truck? I thought I saw you just as you were leaving but coudn't remember exactly which slip you wree in and you wree leaving so I didn't cahse you. Unfortunately I cannot make it today. I work from the time I rise to late in the evening most days. Thanks for the info.
It wasn't "free flowing" I wasnt sure what to look for. But the FWC is full of AF and the raw water seacock is full of AF so nothing passed through.

other than from the outside of the muffs there was no water coming out either running or not. I honestly wasn't evgen sure where it was supposed to be coming from. I bet there is another intake somewhere. I was thinking about flushing it from the strainer...is that a bad idea? But come to think of it with the seacock open it should have dumped the AF in it whether or not I had new water coming in correct?

If I read your response correctly,
If you have a raw water strainer then you have a different raw water intake. You need to connect the water supply to the underside of the hull over the strainer and run the fresh water from there. You probably cooked your impeller. The contraption looks like an inverted toilet bowl plunger with the fresh water hose connecting and flowing water into the engine from there.

Oh crud...I will have to look at that. The AF in the sea strainer is still there and I did not run it dry and I didn't let it over heat. It got to about 180 maybe 190 and I shut it down and I dont think the impeller would have ran dry...but I still dont understand this sytem well enough. I don't want to replace the impeller yet....I want to take the boat out next weekend. ****!

I added a fresh water hose connection that allows me to turn off the seawater valve and run fresh water through the strainer w/o getting under the trailer. My trailer is very low to the ground anyway... Look att he photo below. It shows the orange water connection... Hopefully, you did not burn out your impeller, but I would run the hose connection for a while and see if it does go above the alarm setting:

That was a good idea. So the intake is likely directly in the bottom of the boat? I tried searching a bunch of sites to see what that plunger type looked like and had no luck. Do you have any good search terms for taht? I tried engine flush, raw water flush, muffs etc etc and ran dry.

Wow... just noticed the boat you have. I had a friend with the EXACT same problem (1994 2855), and he also had a sea strainer. His leg provided NO water to the pump, and he needed a "pogo stick" style flush adapter.
He ran his for 10-15 minutes before noticing it was overheated and burned up a impeller. I'd definitely change it if that's you case as well.
How long have you had the boat? Pat sold his after the divorce and it was at Dagmars afterwards.
I'll be headed down to the boat right now to change the remaining spark plugs. Gimme a call if you're down there.

Doug...have you seen the newer strainers that have a hose fitting right on them for flushing?

yep that's the beast...
the OB muffs do nothing... You will probably require a new impeller...

No, I have not. The strainer in the photo is a heavy duty. But I would have gladly bought one with a hose connection...
