I bought a Makita 9227C circular polisher from an aquaintance I have that never used it. $100 and it works great
Well I had the day off to watch the Midgets......
Any I had a couple hours after getting some errands done this morning and after the kids got back from school to begin some compounding with this thing. WOW!. I'm using 3M Super Duty Compound and I'm extremely happy with the results so far. I don't have time to throw any polish at it yet but just from what I have compounded it is looking great. I'll get some pictures up in the morning.

I have the Porter Cable 7424 to do the polishing and will use Star Brite Poly polish

I have been waiting for the temps to get up past 60 before pulling out the compounds from the cabinet. With this springs weather, I may have to wait until July. Todd, you must live in the banana belt...

I don't know if I want to listen to that thing sing by the time I get there. A bottle top popping maybe....

Okay, I'll pop a bottle top for ya! Wouldn't want you to get thirsty doing all that buffing!

Todd, now that you have one of each... which one do you like better the Porter or the Makita? Which one is quieter? more balanced? heavier?

BTW, you can bring it and do parts of my boat I have not gotten near yet... I still have to polish out where the Bayliner logo went on the hull...

We are just about packed and ready to rock and roll in the AM. I have to hook up the truck before sunset... Dink is already on board and I tied down my 3.5 kicker on the bow where the generator will go... I still have to make some kind of mount for that before I stick it in the engine bay (I know....)...

Well for compounding the Makita really cuts through. The PC though although I've only used it on a small part but with the different pads seems to be the ticket. The PC is a little louder but I throw the iPod on and some ear muffs.
I'm on my way home now from my Daughter's Dance competition. I have still some things to get ready but I also have the AM before the game to get ready.

I have the Porter Cable and really love it. With the hood and loop pad disc and the different pads available it's been great at everything from coarse to fine.

Some day I'll get more of the boat polished up.

I use it mostly on wood with the vacuum collector hood on it and it hardly leaves any sanding dust behind.

The other nifty tool is the Fein oscillating sander. With the little polishing pads it will reach into the tightest places and shine 'em right up.

Mostly use that one for wood also.

I need to do more rubbing on the boat!

I've got $125 worth of Lowes gift certificates burning a hole in my wallet too. Might have to look at another good low speed polisher.

Mike, this Porter Cable 7424 is the best polisher I've ever used. Lowe's use to sell them, but I found mine at Tools-plus.com (http://www.tools-plus.com/porter-cable-7424.html)

The Hook and loop pads Pete is talking about also makes it really easy to step up to different pads.
I bought the pads and pad cleaner at properboatcare.com (http://properboatcare.com/new75inccste.html)
They sell the pads and the PC in a kit to, but it was a little more money.

If you want to burn your Lowes card, see if they'll order the Pc 7424 for you since they sell PC products.

I went through there for some other stuff, but no polishers at all, only grinders. I have a couple already, but sounded like good way to burn those gift cards. We get (and give them) throughout the day to each other. You can use the points on lots of stuff, but I always convert mine over to Lowes gift certificates. Pretty nice overall.

I'll ask them next time I'm in.
