Having checked my anchor chain once before and seeing some rusty links and seeing a ball-o-rust at the bottom I decided it would be prudent to replace it all. We have the original windlass and Bayliner didn't make it easy to gain access to the locker. There is a hole in a cabinet above the berth that the chain drops through and down into the locker. We removed the mirror above the berth drill a 5" hole in the plywood here for access. Had a spare hatch plate lying around in the garage so installed it from the inside out. Now if we need to gain access we can reach through here. Will be running the end of the line through the bulkhead and tying a knot with washer to the 150' of 9/16" line. I found a place on ebay that sells the G43 BBB 5/16" chain through Washington Chain down by Starbucks. His price is without tax and beats the best price I could find locally. Sitting in the truck right now is 300' of chain. Will be attaching this to a 44# Original Bruce we were given by a friend. Best of all, there is someone interested in 100' of my old chain! Will post pictures of the access plate when I get the camera up there.

sounds like a good deal was made. I had 300 ft of chain on my 39 and about 325 now on my 50 and have never had to use more then 200 feet ever, just my experience. My normal drop is between 125 and 175 feet of chain in 33 to 42 max feet of water.

We increased the line to 150' after fisheries said the longest amount of chain we could get was 250'. Then found out that was in smaller pieces. I had already ordered the line. Can't hurt having that much.

The problem with how the anchor set up now is in an emergency we couldn't release the chain/anchor due to the rusted knot in the end! Now if needed can cut the line. I hope to never need too. There is some money in the chain!

We removed the mirror above the berth . . . . ..

A mirror above the berth??? Hmmmm, seems like an odd spot for the Admiral to use a mirror when applying her makeup.

Let me explain...it is at the head of the berth (behind picture). Makes the boat feel bigger?

Since you brought it up...how much line do you carry total? Do you use the 7 to 1 raito that the USCG recomends or less than that for going on the hook? We have an idea of how much line the Hookie as on it, but plan to actually take it all out and verify soon. So far we have only used it in 10' of water, which worked just fine...but it would be good to know for sure how deep we could hook.

Right now the boat has the chain and that is it. We are going to have a total of 300' chain and 150' line attached to it. Even at a 7:1 we can anchor in 60'. 5:1 will be our normal scope.

Definately a good idea to check what you have and make sure it is in good condition. Like I said, we have some bad links and don't want to risk an anchor failure. I will also be throwing on board a danforth type anchor we have and another 150-200' of line as a spare anchor.

I just had to replace the chain on ours to fit the windlass. I just bought 75' of G4 HT chain this evening. The new windlass needs G4 sizing. It was only $2.17/ft so it wasn't as bad as I expected.

What size Mike? 1/4" or 5/16"?

I only need 1/4". The windlass is rated to 700# and G4 goes out past 2500# so it's plenty. The BBB 1/4" I already had is good to beyond the winch's load rating, but doesn't fit the capstan well.

This'll give me 350' of scope altogether. Much more than I'll ever use.

Did you get your roller and bow bling on yet? Any Pics, if so?

Yeah. It's all installed. I have the anchor off (with the new chain), so I can TIG the bolts in place so my anchor doesn't get "liberated" :)

I'll have it all back on there this weekend. I still need to finish running the power up to the DC Bus, inverter location, and then forward to the anchor locker.

Sure is much nicer planning wire runs in this boat though. Tons more room than my previous boat.

Cool. Did the backing plates work ok?

Are you TIG'ing the bolts on that swivel?

Yep. Just finished. Welded up and polished. Ready to be back on the boat tomorrow.

TIG and tri-mix won't introduce any contaminates into the stainless.

Looking at the swivel I received last night, I was wondering if I should just drill and figure out a way to cotter pin the thing, rather than weld it. I suppose the weld prevents it from disappearing in storage or on the bottom?

Also, does anyone use the retrieval line to break free from the bottom on their plow or Manta style?

The only way they're gonna get mine is to cut the chain. I double back the bitter end to the roller, and it's all secured with a boron lock.

I may get 3 of these
http://medeco.com/products/images/G8R-Padlock.jpg

2 for the trailer and hitch and one for the anchor. It's a great padlock and I can key it to my house key.

How much can you get those for?

How much can you get those for?

I believe list is $139 or so. But we're a Medeco High Security dealer and they give dealers and employees a nice discount to promote the product. I'll send you a PM with what I'll pay.

They're stout for sure designed for some DOD and Container applications.

It's called the Gator "G8R"
