Has anybody ever done their own bottom paint or can recommend a decent and affordable (ha!) brand of paint?
I just scheduled with Dockside (I know, I swore I would never use them but it is just for the haul out and pressure spray) to have the Oh Wells pulled, pressure washed, and put up on blocks for a weekend so Jeff and I can repaint the bottom and do new zincs.

Do I have to use the sander?

I have painted before. You can either scuff up the existing paint with a scotchbright pad or with a sander. Do you have an ablative on their now? You are selling the boat right? I would use Fiberglass ACT or Bottomkote. We applied the Fiberglass ACT to our 28 and it held up well. Not as well as the Micron Extra but was 1/2 the cost.

Whatever we had on there isn't on there now, so I'm assuming an ablative of some nature. We've had the boat hauled twice in the past year and a half and haven't noticed any flaking or bubbles, so hopefully a good scrub down with a scotchbright pad will work well. We'll have the random orbital ready if needed.
We are selling the boat so we don't need to go best of the best but I also don't want to go cheap or just do a one season paint in case we end up keeping it.

The Fiberglass ACT will last a couple years, at least it should. I only had it on one year before selling but my buddy had it two years when we repainted and it held up really well. The micron is known to go longer.

Thank you for the suggestion. It sounds perfect for what we need.

No problem. I am getting ready to throw some paint on our boat after having some spots fixed.
