It isn't fancy or anything, but we enjoy that pub right up from the dock. Followed by an ice cream cone, of course.

Front Street Ale house and brewery was pretty good when we went. It's been a couple years ago though.

Herb's Tavern makes a good burger.
Friday's Crabhouse, just across the street from the ferry landing has some good grub and great people/ boat watching from their deck. I particulalry like their calamarie and grilled oysters. They are also dog-friendly.

Gonna be married for 8 great years so I have planned a getaway for my wife. So I was looking for more of a formal place. I'm renting a car but don't really want to drive over to Roche for dinner but it's a thought.

On the boardwalk is a 1920 something boat that does special dinner cruises for 2 to 4 people. You book and they will recommend a catered meal and away you go for a nice sunset cruise. I saw the boat... really really cool...
Otherwise, I think you're better off at the Duck Inn

Only ate at the Roche harbor Mcmillans Dining room once, around 3 to 4 years ago, it was without a doubt fantastic, Plan on spending some coin. It was over a couple hundred for the two of us but we were drinking some spendy wine, it must have been good cause i bought another bottle- don't remember much after that. It too was an Anniversary celebration
Few weeks ago we had lunch at Fridays crab house, we used to love he pace but something went wrong with ther food. The fish was crappy, plus they put capers on my fish and chips, I dont like capers, I really don't want them on my fish and chips. At one time they would not even fry fish, I kinda wish they would go back to there grilled Halibut.
My vote is the Roche Harbor McMillans dining room for the two of you.

King's market deli. Can't be beat. The chicken is deep fat fried fresh each morning and the jo-jo fries are nice and juicy. The macaroni salad is made with fresh, not dehydrated onions and the cole slaw is unimaginable. Be sure to leave room for some frozen Sara Lee apple pie topped with some Dreyers vanilla ice cream.
If King's market deli is closed there's always a quick trip over to Roche. ;-)

1) Eat on the boat, it is the best food in FH.
2) Mexican: Walk up where the cars line up to board the ferry and veer up and left, look for a house on the corner. The best mexican, very unusual spices, and a great deck.
3) Fried Fishes: Hungry Clam. On the way to the Mexican place, next to the blue dolphin. Great fish/chips clam strips, etc. with a cold beer.
4) Breaky: tossup, blue dolphin and the place on main next to the movie theatre. dolphin has the best ham, movie place has the best bacon.
5) Seafood. Get to know Brenda and Eric and the floating fish shop. The save the best stuff for 'friends' and are super nice folks. They will hook you up for cooking on the boat.
6) Pizza. skip the pizza
7) Steak. skip the steak
8) Chinese. The China Pearl looks pretty tacky, but it is pretty good. Take out and eat on the boat, it isn't pretty inside.
9) In the old days, Herbs was a place where you could get a good burger and feel like a local. Now it is just a place to get an OK burger and feel like a tourist. Great beer selection.
10) Ale House: good beer, not great food.
Thats all I got.
Halley's Bait Shop got a nice remodel, looks like a fun place to try, but haven't yet. On the list for next time instead of Herbs. I will try and keep the credit card on the table, Ken.;)

I've been fed at Tally's location #1 in the list. He's right. Tender steak bits and fresh asparagus off the Wickus grill... hmmmm...

 Tally
Also some of the best affordable food with at great menu is the Bowling Alley at the top of Spring street next to West marine. Not known for it's view or decor but good food!
I'll still vote for the boat.

I always head to the bowling alley for there breakfast, damn good.
i did check out that link to the duck pond restaruant, it looks like a great place.
If you like Ahi sashimi cut yellow fin , the seafood market on the docks has it, and it is really good. it is frozen but do not fret, it really is good.

I'll second the pizza at the Bowling Alley. Nothing fancy, but good overall.

When you are going up the main North South road on the right side of the street there is a Mexican place that has mondo Margarita's in a huge fishbowl, drink two and you are flying! Food is the normal good mexican food by the way too.

I feel like I should put something in here because Friday Harbor is my home town...but I dont want to put down any of your suggestions. I will only say that you should make sure you are VERY NICE to everyone you come in contact with on the island, even more so if you plan to eat their food. They have a big spitting/bug putting in food/other nasty stuff you dont want to know about issue there. As a kid working in all the mentioned resturants I saw more times than not flys from the lights in peoples burgers, lots of spitting in salids and fyer foods (espically from Kings! I would never eat there!!)...island people are not like you guys, there are special breed of foke. Myself included. :argh2
Maybe its the same other places, maybe I just know to much, just though I would chime in!
If it were me I would pack in my own food. Good luck!! ;)

One of my classmates in vet school was a native Friday Harbor guy. He wasn't weird, and definitely was the life of the party. He's a real kick in the pants and could soak up the suds too. Of coarse back then we all soaked up the suds except for our Mormon classmates. They made root beer and brought it to our keggers.

...........He wasn't weird, and definitely was the life of the party. He's a real kick in the pants and could soak up the suds too. ........... that's how they learn to cope with the wet dark winters stuck on a rock. When I was in high school I always wanted my parents to move to FH or Lopez

That is a required skill for living through growing up on the island, among other things...dark lonley winters, waiting for the summer to mess with the visiters. "What time to the whales come by?" us; "2pm sharp on the east side"....stupid people.

This place is fabulous. If you have the chance, it is worth the trip. They aren't open every day - call ahead.
