View Full Version : Before and After - Bottom Paint, Zincs, & Hydrofoil

Before (obviously). Pretty gross. Who knows when the last bottom paint was done. We hauled out last September and we still had lots of growth. Hopefully that is a thing of the past with the new paint. The zincs were pretty much beat, too.

We taped off the areas to be painted as well as the outdrive. We sprayed the out drive with antifouling out drive paint. After sanding down the hull with a random orbital sander fit with 60-grit, we wiped it down and applied two coats of black West Marine CPP Plus. Pulled the tape off, put new zincs on swim step, trim tabs, and out drive. And installed a Sport 300 hydrofoil late last night.

I think we saved around $600 on just the bottom/out drive paint job. I didn't add into the quotes to have the zincs redone.

Looks great. Very satisfying knowing you can save some money through sweat equity. Time to get her wet again.

When we had Old Go Aweigh, I'd paint the bottom with West Marine CPP Plus... but the ablative type... Worked well.
Looks good... Enjoy the rest of the summer... on the water...

Looks good from here.
Did you add Zincs to you lift rams? That last picture looked liek they weren't on there.

The screws weren't long enough on the ones that came with the zincs, so I picked some more up today so we could put them on before the boat goes back in the water. It was either that or drill down into the zinc but since that is the area that seems to go first on ours, we decided longer screws would make the zincs last longer.
I also had to pick up another trim tab zinc because I only bought one set
You only need one zinc on each trim tab, right? Not a top and a bottom. Duhhhhhh.

Yes one per tab is good!

The ones I have look like to buns bolted through the trim tabs.
So one set on each side (top and bottom of each tab)

I've never had them on my trim tabs... hmmm?

I've got a pair on each tab. They're really rudder muffin zincs and last forever. If your tabs are bonded I'd recommend having them. Easy to keep an eye on and they'll offset the rest of the stainless hanging back there.

yep
I have a set on now and new ones from the PO. Since we trailer and Mike's on the Hard we won't see much wear.
Shannon and Jeff may want them though since they're in all the time

We have the biscuit type ones that Todd posted. That was what was on there originally but I just wasn't thinking when I went to the supply shop. I saw two sandwiched together and I thought I was getting a deal or something .
Of course once we do all this work there is a ton of interest in the boat. After all the sweat and $$, we should just buy a trailer and keep her.

Oh, and on top of it all, Jeff says the boat has never ran better than it did today. He and the girls took it from the yard to our marina and I had to drive the car and meet them. I could see them out in the bay WOT and having fun.

It looks like a much happier boat for sure. Nice work. I personally enjoy doing as much myself as I can. It makes me appreciate it more and I get to learn from each experience.

Yeah then you can trailer to PT and meet us in the San Juans anytime.
We trailer to Anacortes frequently, save on gas a time.
What were you guys thinking of buying if you sold her?

The original idea was to build a trawler....BUT...Jeff has a bug now to build an aluminum jet boat to replace our current jet boat, something more Sound friendly. So, that is project #1.
If we sell the Oh Wells, we'll probably downgrade to a smaller Bayliner for the time being, probably a 2455 or something similar.

Got it. Two boats to clean and maintain....whew.
Price seems right on this one? The 2452 Guys would know though

How does that 305 perform on that boat? If it isn't the MPI it seems like it may be a little sluggish. Just curious if you know. I looked at the 2655 with the 5.0 350 and the boat seemed pretty darn heavy for the amount of power. That one was the MPI and I was a little dissapointed in it in terms of performance.

The 2452 would be OK I suspect, but at $15K for the boat, you're only a winter and a couple of grand away from freshening the motor and bumping up to a stroker.

We took out the Oh Wells with the GPS going yesterday and it flies. It pops right up on plane now and we maxed out at 29.2 knots with a good wind and tide going against us. At about 3500 rpms we're cruising nicely somewhere between 22 and 25 knots.
We need to lookup what it takes to trailer an oversize boat. If it isn't too extreme, we'll buy a trailer and keep her.

I think all you need is an oversize load sign on the front of the towing vehicle and on the stern of the boat. Also, I don't think you can tow that width load at night. Storage on the trailer at home is great. Handy to work on whenever you feel so.

... and an oversized load permit

Is the oversize permit good for only one trip, or a specified duration of time?
SomeSailor

Single trip permits are $10, annual is $100. Anything over 8'6" wide or 14' tall.
