View Full Version : Lurking Locked!?

It was brought to my attention that outsiders (non-members) are not allowed to read and learn here. Personally I don't think that is in our best (help all our boating buddies of the NWest) interest. What say ye oh mighty keeper of the site keys Mike? Ted

I had the same thoughts, but then it was pointed out to me how many new members are registering. They don't post much yet, but they do sign up. It's free to join so seems ok.

Yes I do agree, and the only thing I can say is that there are a few old PSounders that are not ready to do that, but still want to keep up with us. And since we are so friendly to all, even people from around the world, we should allow our reluctant locals to lurk here.
Ted :D
Ted... you were the main reason I set it that way. You went on and on... even called me and later listed names of people who hadn't posted and you thought were "lurkers". :?
I set it that way so we'd know who we were talking with and who was in and out of here. It's free to log in... it's free to visit, etc. But... if you want to say something... I need to have a username.
There are logs maintained on this site 24/7. IPs are logged, user names are logged, they are checked against duplicate users and geographic locations. These logs are gathered so if someone becomes a jerk... I have the ability to send them away and guarantee they don't come back (or at least know when they do).
As far as "reluctant locals" .. they're more than able to pick a username and lurk all they want.

I might of felt that way before back then, but due to the way this site has changed of late I think we should open it to all that may want to join, to lurk, to do what ever they feel they need to do, besides what are we really hiding in here anyway. Ted :D
I might of felt that way before back then
Well... I'm not gonna start reconfiguring things everytime you decide you change your thinking on things Ted.
but due to the way this site has changed of late I think we should open it to all that may want to join, to lurk, to do what ever they feel they need to do
What do you mean by that? It is open to all who want to join and lurk.
besides what are we really hiding in here anyway :D
Nothing Ted.
But here's my spin on it. AND... this is after much thought provoked by your last outburst. We need to have SOME modicum of control over what goes on here. This isn't a private site, and anyone is welcome to log on, with any username they chose. They can then read along, add to it if they like... or just lurk. I don't care.
I feel that if someone is so strongly opposed to being a part of this... then fine... deal with that. But, don't say in one breath.. I don't like this place, these people, or the way things are done... and then in another... complain that you can't sit there in secret and listen to everything you find so wrong.
To use an analogy... It's a lot like standing on the dock holding a conversation with some friends. If you don't like me, I wouldn't expect you to come stand next to me so you can hear what I say. I would welcome a stranger into this same conversation on the dock, but I wouldn't want to stand there long if he insisted on being anonymous or invisible.
Ted; You remind me a lot of a Master Chief I used to work for. In his world... there were only two sorts of people. He used to say "Yer either fer me.. or agin me..." (from Kentucky wouldn'tcha know). But Ted, contrary to his view on things... it's OK to disagree... and not everyone who does so... is "agin ya".

I am not trying to get in the middle of anything between SS and Ted, But what does it hurt to sign up and give yourself a username? I look at 7 or 8 boards and I have my username on all of them, Do you think maybe someone would have something to hide? and maybe that is why they do not sign up? Ted had pointed out and wrote out a list of folks who on the site had not filled in their Bio, and I was one of them, and I went back in and re filled out my Bio. agian I am not trying to start something, but it is pretty easy to sign up, and there is no cost :D

Ok I'll spell it out for all. There are a few old time PSsounders out there that for some reason got their feelings hurt, or don't feel welcome enough to log on as themselves or as a new name since SS can view all the addy's. Those people still like to lurk and stay in touch with what is happening here, and now they are not allowed to do so. That is all there is to it, I was trying to be a nice guy and now I will give it up!
Ted
Ted;
You're like dealing with a teenage girl sometimes. You say one thing... and then another... and when things don't pan out for you... you drop into this passive-aggressive mode.
All I'm saying is we can all get along just fine. You're the one who called me on the phone and started in on all this. You belly-ached when Steve (SeaPuppy) came back... you belly-ached when Al (Lazy Flamingo) showed up... you belly-ached when people posted on BOC in addition to here.
Steve's a great guy I've known as long as I've known you. We have our differences, and sometimes he posts some stuff that I differ with... but that's part of the game. I've never met Al, and yes... his posts are growing tiresome... but he'll mellow I hope and try to post something more substantiative in the future... but thats part of the deal as well. (until then I'll keep deleting...)
I'd love to have the "old gang" back on here. You know who I'm talking about... Tally, Mike, Stuart, Doug, Harry... etc, but that's just not the reality of it. Heck... you're part of the reason they left in the first place. I'm glad you're back in their graces and they've taken you back into their fold.
BUT... I'm not going to kowtow to anyone... or beg for their presence. They're all welcome here, and I've asked them all to come here personally. They've chosen to stay away... so be it.
If you wanna run this place... by all means give it a shot.

I think Mike is doing a fine job maintaining this board and I appreciate the many hours he has spent in doing so. Requiring a login should not intimidate lurkers.
I'm so glad that you know me better than I do myself! Ted
You are afterall... pretty predictable Ted. I remember the day I called you from work nearly 3 years ago... asking if you would like to come to IBNW and become a member. I was invited here, but told certain others, that I would only come over conditionally (that you be allowed). You chose not to. Seems like the shoe is on the other foot now? The difference is, you were big enough (after awhile) to step back in and let it go. Some are not (and I'm OK with that).
I'm an old dog Ted. I don't forget lessons learned nearly as easily as some, but I think we spend entirely too much time worrying about "who's in" or "who's out". If someone you know wants to stop by and see whats going on... go for it. You can have as many different logins as you wish. They're free, they're anonymous and they ask nothing nothing of a user.
BUT... they do hold someone accountable. If someone comes in and starts making lewd comments or attacking someone... or generally becomes a pain in the butt... there's not a thing I can do if they're named "Guest"

I guess that kinda sums it up with SS last statement, Makes sense, if someone is out of control and you need to shut the person off, you need to have a switch to do it with.

So lets recap: "its MY site and I'll do as I want to" or Original founders of IBNW "zero" and current owner of new IBNW enough to win (regardless of others opinion) or whether they were in jail or voted twice, or illegal votes or people you don't like. :salute: :la:
ps. since when does life not allow you to be wrong once not have the chance to correct it later in life! :notworthy:
WOW !
This is a good one !
There is another site.....The Hull Truth....that went through this recently  and came up with
.
If you are not a member with a login name you can read but not post.
If you are a member with a login name you can post
If you are a member with a Captains Club "donation" you can read, post, and also post/read exclusively wiith the Capatins Club members.
I woud guess, the owner of the site makes a LOT of money (just like SS  ) on the donations.
It is the largest boating forum in the USA no doubt and I bet a full time job running it.
Where am I going with this ? No idea....... I am still here in China and thought this was a good time to post !
BTW: I just read that in Shanghia today 300 workers were in jail for going to the factory management and demanding pay for weekend work.......

Currently I'm the only surviving flounder to post on here.....and I'm quite happy with Mike's leadership overall. If anyone wanted to read this forum all they have to do is "sign in". We'd never who " Bottom Feeder" or Lamar" was. They have to reveal nothing to join. How can that be a problem? They can "lurk" under any old name all they want and only Mike would know if he traced their IP. So what's the big deal ? If the old gang wanted to be here they certainly could, and no need to hide.
We have a modicum of security and very little problems, life is good. Everyone has a different view of what a website should be. I dislike all the mindless crap getting posted in "Dock Walk'..I quit reading the forum, oh well.
Ted, you're not even on here enough to be busting Mike's chops over this issue. I'm not ready for a shake-up but just in case .....can I get a "Re-Elect Some Sailor" sticker?? :argh Gene
So lets recap: "its MY site and I'll do as I want to"
Ya see Ted... that's exactly what I was talking about. Your position is that somehow I am wronging a SMALL group of people who doesn't want to be associated with this site in the first place?
I don't get it.
i have to say that i dont like the signing in very much just because it is inconvenient but i do it so i can look around. i certainly dont think it is something that needs to start such an uproar. this is a boating site and it seems to me anyone is welcome. i dont post much but this kind of stuff is getting out of hand.

I thought you were working today Pam? We should do a geocache hike this weekend.
i noticed boat news you dont have to log in. and yes i am working, dont tell anyone
pam
But how do we know it's you? Maybe it's REALLY Tally? Or that dreaded Puget Mike? Or maybe even the devil himself Stuart? :D
I left Ted's forum open so anyone could post to him 8)
Is Bob flying today? We should plan a geocache up on Eagles Ridge soon.

Look folks, if you decide that you do not like to log in every time then do as I did and set up a global account that is good for every single php board in the entire world... Then set up your puter to remember your login ID and you NEVER have to log in again!!!! Unless of course you delete all your cookies... DUH!!!
I get so sick of these whiners out there that "dislike" login's... well, it prevents a lot of spam scum out there that like to harvest email info etc. Without a login, you are subject to that. I think most of us understand in this day and age a little privacy is required to PROTECT everyone... Scheesh! Get a frikin life!
SS, you are doing a great job and I understand the hurt feelings that some have with owning/registering a site name... you registered this site legally and should have some say in its running... Keep it up...
and Ted, shut up... (in a nice way) :argh

hate to say it...but 1)the dock walk is there as a means of telling a joke..making conversation and generally like a walk down the dock...right????.....so that is the place for mindless dribble.....some people like to post mindless dribble because it's fun to see others make a comment or post or respond to a joke or even draw a comment out to get an emotion or feeling out......sometimes you get to see what makes a person tick by making a comment....it's called conversation and maybe making a friend.....I have friends that I have held in hi esteem for about 20 yrs....I like making friends......and I defend people that have the right to post or make comments as long as they don't get offensive..if that happens then they deserve the wrath of mike's decision...
2)It is mikes sight..he designed it..he made it what it is today and he's managing it as he sees fit...it isn't a democracy here....it's his sight..so asking for a revote is imho extremely stupid.....it's like asking for the king to resign.....say what you want...it's mike's site.....
..anyone want to make a new one..I'm sure your free to get a web address and start one up.....then you can make up the rules as you see fits the bill .......
mike asked me to come to the new site for quite awhile before I finally decided it was ok.....I didn't come here for quite a bit only cuz I knew some didn't like me(whom shall remain nameless)...I try not to bash anyone here and it seems to be a decent place that people are getting along here.......as long as I don't post anything disgusting or immoral..I'm free to post here..all it took was a few seconds to register.....again...I know some don't like me for my comments and attempt at helping some...sometimes I'm right..sometimes I'm wrong....I can admitt when I'm wrong and I have...hell...I've even invited people to meet me some place on the boat.......but it's all about boating here and not who runs what and who can post or not...mike's made it extremely easy to come here and lerk and see what goes on........
I lerked here for quite awhile before I finally agreed to come here....and all I've gotten is people ignoring me...or making rude crude comments and even stupid emails directly to me.....I like to gather people into conversation...sometimes I make incorrect comments in jest just to get a response...instead it starts a fight here from some people that have no knowledge or are too sensitive.....I've even met others that have said that they didn't feel welcome because of some of the bickering and verbal attacks on them because of a choice few.......now who really rules this place??.....is it mike or you people that think they know everything ????
In the case of Ted....Ted you haven't made one decent post except about the bayliner free test ride that I have found....your attempts at jabbing me has been futile and childish to say the least....and to implicating mikes rules as being too restrictive is just fueling another silly attempt at interrupting a sight............your free to post comments here and make comments on other posts...but I see that your attempts at calling mike on the side complaining about others is extremely childish....be man enough to tell people what you think to their face or just don't say anything at all.........I've made my comments here...and they are my opinions alone......but I sure won't take any garbage from people that haven't a clue where I came up from or my education or anything about me.....Mike and I have disagreements...but we respect each other enough to let silly things not get in the way...he's been to my house..my boat and we've talked on the phone......I appreciate his friendship but we have different backgrounds....we can respect that and put things aside to get important things done.....
well...better get off my soap box......I've said my bit and hopefully this will end and we can all go boating...and I invite anyone to meet me at anytime on the boat or at a dock....I'm willing to by the coke...or beer..... :argh arrrr

I think it's fair enough to require log-in if you want to post. I think Mike is doing a very good job and I sure appreciate his efforts. I couldn't do it. I'm too damn dumb.
Whenever you're the leader you're going to make some people unhappy. Keep on truckin', Mike.
I'm a lover, not a fighter. I love you, too, Ted.

Guys, guys and gal, this is in no way an attempt to unseat SS or cause a major ruckus or say that SS isn't doing a good job here. I just thought we should return to the way it was in the begining, you could lurk without loging on but you had to register to post. That is all, nothing more, nothing less. Ted :D
... we should return to the way it was in the begining, you could lurk without loging on but you had to register to post.
Nope. You're welcome to make up any name you wish on here, read and post if you wish. I feel we need it for a number of reasons. I've tried to explain that to you, but I think we both understand where we're at in this one.
Certain forums are available to search engines, email harvestors, phone bots and other "lurkers" as you call them... but beyond that... nope.
Do a little research Ted, and you'll see this really has very little with who used to be here or there.
Google your cell number, your home number, your email address... and see what you find.

OK... I'll back up.
From a technical standpoint, you need to have some method of even moderately securing a site. You don't necessarily have to implement those controls, but the facility has to be in place for them initially.
We'll use your house as an example. Your house was built, and the builder designed it with a very simple and relatively effective security system. They are called locking doors. They keep your house safe and secure, to the limits you desire.
When you leave, you lock the door. But in order for this to be effective... you must close the door as well. If the door isn't closed, the locks still work, but are ineffective. The same goes for the windows and blinds.
Now... imagine you invite me over for coffee... we're sitting in your kitchen enjoying a cup of joe, and some conversation. Meanwhile... some unshaven guy walks through in his underwear and sits down beside you. You don't know his name, he won't say a word. He looks familiar to me, and I realize he's your whack-job neighbor that once told your other neighbors that you're a loud-mouthed, overbearing idiot. It's obvious that you're not comfortable around him... but you tell me you have an "open door policy"... everyone is welcome. You don't know his name, or why he's here. You only know he can come and go as he pleases... secure in his anonymity because of your policy.
The same is true of a website... There are programs called "email harvesters" and other such robotic scripts that do nothing but automatically scan through websites, gathering email addresses, phone numbers, addresses, ssn's,
Do a search on Google for some of these words: "Tedster" "BOC" "Phone" ... and then Google those results: "Ted Newton Phone" "PSPS", etc. These bots are specifically designed to screen for connections between commonly found keywords and formats. Then they run those to names and phone numbers... and then to emails and addresses.
