We are headed to the islands for a week or so in late August and still doing a bit of planning. Having spent only limited time in that area, I have a question for people who are regular visitors - Where is the best place to get gas in the US San Juans? Last time we fueled in the Sound before we went up and came back on the same tank (a bit lower than comfortable). This time I am hoping to make a straight run to the islands without a top off in Port Townsend, but this means I will need fuel during the week in the islands. I'm planning on gas at Friday Harbor, but wonder if the prices are any better at another place?

when I was moored in Anacortes,,Cap Sante was way cheaper than the Islands,,not too far away,,and you can go down the slough to LaConner,,kinda cool if you've never been there.

Skyline Marina in Anacortes was the cheapest for us. After pulling out of Deception Pass, it's just up the coast on the right. It was .03 cents cheaper than Blakely Island Marina, but beware they'll pump ya out... and then you'll see a $7 charge on your bill.

Thanks - these are both great suggestions - I can see how Anacortes would be cheaper than running fuel out on a barge or ferry to the islands. Skyline is not far at all and the slough is a worthy adventure time permiting.

SS - The decals came through perfect, they should be a good way to meet some of the other members! Now all I need to do is connect the I-Pod with with Red Neck YC song to the loudhailer!

the fuel at cap sante is now as expensive as the rest of the San Juans. We fueled up at LaConnor and then topped off at Friday.

We just got back from 3 weeks in the San Juans. Friday Harbor, Roche Harbor, and Blakely Island were all the same (within a few pennies of each other). Port Townsend and Edmonds were about 30 cents per gallon cheaper than the islands. La Conner was cheaper than Anacortes. It definitely pays to call around and plan fuel stops.

Here's some phone numbers for fuel docks and GAS prices as of 7/30/08:

Kingston 360-297-3545
Edmonds 425-775-4588 $4.50 (down from $4.63 last week)
Port Townsend 360-385-7031
Deception Pass 360-675-5411 $4.75
La Conner 360-466-4478
Anacortes Cape Sante 360-293-3145
Anacortes Marine Service Center 360-293-8200
Anacortes Skyline 360-293-5134
Friday Harbor 360-378-3114 $4.88
Roche Harbor 360-378-2155 $5.12 (we paid $4.99 7/09)
Blakely Island 360-375-6121 $4.96 (same as 7/13)

Here's some South Sound numbers:

Breakwater Marina 253-752-6663 $4.75
Narrows Bait & Tackle 253-564-3474
Demoines 206-824-5700 $4.36
Port Orchard 360-876-5535 $4.67
Pouslbo 360-779-9905 $4.52

Notice that Edmonds has dropped for the last 3 weeks straight $4.73 - $4.63 - $4.50. This is by no means a comprehensive list. It does pay to call around because I found big differences with marinas close to each other.

Not that it is in the San Juans but we topped up yesterday in Bellingham and it was $4.36/gall for diesel before tax, with tax it was $4.72.

Don't spend anytime diverting your course for a few cents a gallon. You'll burn up the cost savings simply turning in another direction.

It dropped some, just bought diesel for 4.85 a gallon including tax, gas was cheaper but not sure of the cost.
The kicker for us to fill there was I planned on a 15 knot cruise home yesterday fighting tide and wind so I was going to burn some fuel, not to mention the fuel cost at Deer was cheaper then Everett and Breakwater fuel dock here in Tacoma, Go Figure.
Thought I seen the Laconner fuel dock advertising 4.29 for diesel as I passed by.
