View Full Version : Carrier
Saw a big carrier in Hong Kong today. # 68 on its side. SS.......which one is it ?
Spud
That would be the USS Chester W. Nimitz.
She's the first of the Nimitz Class Super Carriers.
Here's a funny site I keep bookmarked. This guy is a FANATIC about the US Navy. Ironically, he's got some really good info.
This first link will show you where HE thinks they all are:

And this second has ALL KINDS of cool data on previous deployments, air wing composition, etc.

He's done a fantastic job with all of it. Kindof scarey though. :)

SS: would that be because this (civilian) seems to have, and be publishing, a lot of detailed info that might be considered, if in the wrong hands, detrimental to our security? Or, is it scary that there are individuals that become obsessed with this type of info?
I recall that when Tom Clancy published Hunt for Red October he came under a cloud of suspicion about having classified info...but he proved everything was from public record. I suppose he was the quintessential military enthusiast who could tell a page turning story by pasting together bits and pieces to come up with the real deal. I guess if you can dig deep enough, make good assumptions and some lucky guesses you too can appear to have more information than those who are supposed to have it.

Probably a little of both :)
Ship's movement is classified information within 24 hours of movement, but it's not hard to notice a 110,000 ton hunk of steel floating in your bay. :)
The Japanese have always been huge fanatics when it came to the military over there. I was involved with a special projects squadron and we often flew with the Air Force in Kadena, Japan. At the tail end of their program in the late 80's, we'd have literally hundreds of Japanese photographers at the departure end of the runway snapping pictures. They could identify the plane, it's mission and most of it's systems from those photos of antenna and camera ports.
I suppose though that catching a terrorist at the border with a Seattle bus and ferry schedule is even scarier though. :(
