View Full Version : Seat pedistals on my engine lid

I have two pretty nice seat pedestals installed on my engine compartment lid with stainless posts. They were there when I bought the boat but I don't have any seats to put on them. I can't pull the posts out of the base but I haven't tried hard. I think they are permanent.
I had initially intended to buy some seats to put there but now I'm wondering if I really want stationary seats on the deck lid. It seems like it might hinder movement and possibley cause a tripping hazard. It seems like a couple fold out camp chairs would be more versatile. I'm sure I can sell the pedistals if I take them out.
Incidently my captains seat (a cheap plastic Todd) fits right on either one of those pedistals.
My question is would you leave them or take them out? Why?
Thanks :)

I'll take some tomorrow. But visualize two 20" or so posts evenly spaced right in the middle of my engine hatch.
They are definitely in the way without seats on them!
They remind me of sport fishing boats with one big seat in the middle pointing backwards. I suspect thats what they were installed for by the PO.

Were they for a seat or a table?

That's what I was wondering too... A cockpit table?

Personally, I wouldn't have permanent posts attached to my engine compartment cover. It would be too awkward to handle the cover with posts sticking out from it. If the posts are removable from the cover, that might be just fine.

I agree. I have the base in the hatch for the cockpit table, but it's removeable, leaving the base only.

Chass, maybe you can convert the pedestal with a sunken base plate and then you could easily remove it. I am surprised it is not like that now.

That was what I was picturing it was until he said there were poles coming out. I think these ones are fine and would be great for a table. I was thinking table when he first posted this thread. Having the posts coming out seems like a bad idea. If he could replace them with these would be a good idea. Still want to see pics to get a better idea of what you are talking about cuz I am still having a hard time seeing it. How could you open the hatch? With the posts coming out I mean?

They could just be stuck. Those get jammed pretty easily.
Got a pic Chass?

That is one of the reasons I posted the photo. Thought maybe it was stuck in there. Mine get stuck once in a while and its like it was permanently in there. I actually put the table back on top to be able to twist it free.
Chass, stupid question, but did you think about asking the previous owner what they were?

Hi All,
New to IBNW,
I have a deck mount on the engine lid of my 1976 Bounty, so the post is easy in, easy out, easy to say when you are "double nickel".
I agree with all the above that a perm post would really hamper having the hatch open and secure.

Ok, here are the pics. Even if the posts come out, this type of pedistal sticks up pretty high and could easily be tripped on. I don't think the post comes out though.
Yes, they are in the way. What a pain. I'm pretty sure I'm going to pull them off the boat.

I would yank them. They look like an accident waiting to happen.

I'd replace the base on deck with the flush mounts like the newer boats and keep the table if you still have it. Otherwise, yank the bases. Sell them on ebay and get a portable table.

I don't have a table for the back of the boat. My table sits in the cockpit in front of the L seat next to the captains seat.
I think those pedistals were used for seats. They are way to low for a table.
I had pretty much planned on pulling them out but I wanted a second opinion. I think the general consensus is yank em!

I'd remove them and replace with the flush ones too. Then, wether you decide on a table or chairs both are removable.
Here's pics of when I repaired mine

My friend is a machinist and I asked him to make me an aluminum ring that I will drill and tap for some 10-24 stainless screws and sandwich the engine hatch with the ring.

Those style posts you have do not remove-- when you unbolt them from the hatch you will see how they form the inside of the tube to be a flare to hold it inside of the casting.

Ok thanks. Thats what I thought!
I am going to pull them.
Any suggestions on how to seal of those bolt holes?!
I could just goo some Vulkem in those holes and wipe smooth . . . but I don't know how long that would last.

Is there a hole beneath the base?
If so, you could, put in two quick twist or pry out hatch vents?

or screw down access plate covers?

Use some 3M 4200 to seal the old holes and set the screws for this one.
If not use some stainless steel joint connector bolts. The heads are flatter than a carraige bolt.

Thankfully there are no holes under the pedistals other than the bolt holes.
That looks like a good solution. I'll try and source something like that.

They make joint connecting nuts too, that have the same flat head

I did a little repair on my deck filling some bolt holes with epoxy.
I masked over the holes and the area surrounding. I cut the masking tape over the holes and injected some two-part epoxy. As the epoxy settled in the holes, I kept filling until just above flush.
After hardening thoroughly, I went back with a blade and cleaned up the extra epoxy and removed the tape. I was amazed at how well the repair blended in- would've been even better with a little gelcote.

Thats a good idea steve. With a touch of gelcoat I could make them almost disapear that way. I might do that. I could probably just drip some resin in there too.
