View Full Version : Stupid Boat Tricks this weekend

Those of you who have been to Ganges Marina on Saltspring Island will know that you don't get too close to shore on the north side of the marina. It is a minefield of big, ugly sharp rock. On Saturday night this big loud 30 foot boat comes bobbing in on that side of the marina and starts chugging along waaaaaay too close to shore, eyeballing available slips, I guess it was a better view from back there. Next thing you know, THUD, the entire stern lifts up about 2 feet, and the boat tips severely over to one side. The girl standing on the side decks barely hung on and almost went for a swim. The boat came down off the rock and refloated. So what does numb nuts do? Reverse. I guess he's thinking "Uh oh, there's rocks here, I better back up". Well, he starts backing up, and then he gives it some throttle. The stern now hits the exact same rock, the boat stops absolutely dead, and the girl does a lip stand on the the deck, ends up flat on her face. Fortunately the boat didn't ride up on the rock, so the prop was (I think) saved. He spins it around and chugs out of the marina and we never saw him again.
The funny thing is, as it went by, I saw two big "For Sale" signs in the windows. Some poor sucker better get a survey before buying this boat!

The girl who did the lip stand probably has had enough of boating :)

That would be a sick feeling.
I seen a guy in Poulsbo loose his female companion in the water when she tried to jump about 5 feet to the dock. Splash, then next thing he is still driving has his boat in gear trying to move around and she is between the boat and the dock. It was a double berth opening so he is all over the place. We went screaming at him to shut his motors down, by this time he was sideways and the props facing her. It scared the hell out of all of us.
A good thing came from it, I told my wife after seeing this that she was to never ,ever jump from the boat, if I cannot get close enough for her to step off, then to bad for me.
Mike P. Last time I was in Ganges they had started to renovate the place some. At the time the only change was the dockmasters office was moved topside I believe. How is it looking there now?

Brad, the marina office/store is excellent, but it's total culture shock on some of the docks. A few fingers are at 45° angles, grass growing on them, while others are brand new. I guess the upgrade program is happening in island time.
We attended a tasting from a local winery and cheesemaker in the upstairs lounge, it was extremely well done.
Part of the local charm I guess, and we've always loved it.

I hear you, to much change takes away the charm. Look at Bedwell or now called Poets Cove. Roche Harbor, Deer Harbor all grew. Still like them but not the same. Maybe we can fit Ganges in on a return trip from Desolation, or was it princess Louisa-one or both those places we are going for this year anyway.
