View Full Version : Stripping paint off my hull.

Hi all my dink has sprung a leak, a 4 foot long one. It is where the hypalon is glued to the aluminum hull. Ballard and Weaver both say to just glue it back on, but make sure it is clean and dry first. So I thought I would remove the paint along the edges and clean it all up, but decided that because it will be sitting in the garage I'll just strip all the paint off the hull. It might look nice as a satin type finish on the bottom instead of scratched up white. Now my question, someone was using a stripper to remove paint from something, what was it. And Brad, have you attacked your window frames with it yet? Sorry for the long post.
Chris.

I'm using Stryp-EZ to remove the paint from my little Carver. I've got about 1/3rd of it done now. Works like a charm and costs $7.99 gallon.

Hey SS where did you get it?

True Value hardware :) You get a cheaper price if you join their silly "Value Club" (or some name like that). But, its free and I saved $5.00 on a gallon that way.
It it MUCH easier than sanding. I bought a new D/A sander and a pile of pads, but with this stripper, you just brush it on and scrape it off in sheets about 10 minutes later. I'm doing 4 square feet a day as a daily minimum :)

I use Stryp-EZ when I strip paint from my cars. I use the gel formula so it stays put where I apply it. I place a tarp underneath to catch the drippings. The old "not good for the environment" stuff was better but this new water based is OK. On a really bad spot you can use an old rag soaked with EZ and lay it against the paint. Don't count on using the rag ever again, just chuck it.

You can also take a piece of saran wrap and lay over the surface to keep it working. I was really surprised at how well this stuff works. It's not the "friendly" citrus based stuff... but man... don't get it on your skin.
I also bought a cheap roll of painters kraft paper. It catches all the sludge and paint scrapings. I just roll it up and toss in the garbage. I leave the brush in a coffee can for the next day.
I've got a regular little ritual going every afternoon now. :) Almost have one full side done.

...any comment about the effect of this on gel coat? Does it seem to matter what the paint being removed is?

Here's what they say about it:
"Ready-Strip® Marine can remove most varieties of marine paints & varnishes including anti-fouling, polyurethanes, enamels, teak oils, non-skid deck, latex paint, etc., in one application. It can be applied on a multitude of bottom and topside surfaces including fiberglass, wood (it will not discolor the wood or raise the grain), aluminum, etc. Will not damage gel coat, wood grain, or any surface. Ready Strip conveniently changes color to signal when paint is ready to be removed."
I'm using Stripeeze (it's cheaper cousin), but it's all about the same stuff. Doesn't affect fiberglass. (Don't get it on your skin for long though)

Thanks for the info....Ready Strip Marine ...is that a tru-value product ?
I went to the Ace store and everything said not to use on plastic and nothing said ok for fiberglass I guess fibreglass is not plastic now that I think about it. 8)

I buy the Stripeeze at True Value. It's not as strong, but it's only $13/gallon or something like that. It takes off one layer at a time, so you'll really only be anywher close to the fiberglass in the last layer.
I make it a point to do 4 square feet a day at a minimum, and it's actually pretty fun... in a brainless kind of way.
