A couple of weeks ago I was running up the river at cruising speed, about 27 mph. The water was calm, but the weather was a bit unsettled. Blustry little squalls had been passing through all afternoon.
I was in an area where the river is fairly wide and shallow--about 12 to 15 feet deep in the channel I was cruising.
Without warning, the boat suddenly veered hard to port. Thinking I had been hit by a crosswind, a started steering to starboard. But the boat kept pulling left. I pulled the throttle back and got control of the boat, wondering what the hell had just happened. Gingerly, I brought her back up to speed, and found no problems.
I saw nothing in the water, either before or after the incident. I saw no evidence of a wind--no extra chop on the water, nothing. I did not hear anything strike the hull.
Anybody ever experience such a thing?
My thinking is that there must have been something of near neutral buoyancy lying just below the surface of the water that got up against my outdrive. It didn't get to the prop, and when I slowed down it sank away. But what could it be? If it were something solid, I'd certainly have heard or felt it.
A spooky theory that I have relates to the fact that the next day a body was pulled from the river a mile downstream from the site of the incident. This body had gone into the river last November in Salem, 40 miles upstream.
On the other hand, if there's a mechanical problem that could have caused this, I'd like to know about it.

Just the vision of the dead person reaching up and grabbing the outdrive is stuck in my head

Lets hope it wasn't that body that snagged on your drive or prop strut...
That's too wierd.
Welcome to the board btw...
What kind of boat is that you have there Ken? (Looks like Randys)

Patriot, welcome and I know exactly the feeling you described I have been there on more then one occasion. Man I really hate that when it happens. But you will know when you really hit something. It will be a thud, not a shift. So I say to you, not a body you hit.
The shift I feel is when my 4 grand kids put it into gear from above and my boat starts doing circles.

you have dolphin fins on your outdrive?

It almost sounds like you got caught right at the edge of a current, but I'm sure you would have noticed a different appearance of the water's surface. Got me, ditto on the "Twilight" do-do-do...........

I don't think it's spooky. I think you can be sure, it was the deadman's body!
What else could it be, and if you were turned to the left it must have been a Democrat now in heaven and shows you the right direction for us all to go!
Btw to see from your nickname you did'nt vote Repulican last time did you? :D
But to be sure, go back to the same spot and you will notice nothing will happen!
Lift your outdrive and maybe there are some residues of the body. But don't remove them if you like fishing! In the water from november I think it will be a juicy bait for some fish! (But iam not a fisherman). Enjoy!
Welcome to the zoo from the NW on the other side of the Pond!

Remind me never to go fishing with you... :D
You are a sick man Roel
How's the boating over there? Haven't seen many pics or gotten many stories from you lately. I guess you you heard we officially have a Democratic Governor again here in Washington. Not my choice, but glad that's over.

Well, in the absence of any other viable theory, I'm sticking with the DB theory. Twilight Zone and all. There was no current shear, and no hard thump. Still no indication of a mechanical problem.
The boat is a 2750. Don't know what Randy has.

Bradvo,
Heineken was spelled right!! :D
Mike,
Boating is really lousy! Bad wheater, rain wind and not much sun. According to a lot of people this is one of the worst boating seasons of the last decade.
This coming weekend however they say we will get tropic temps even 30 degrees celsius! So we probably go out today in the late afternoon and where we will go depends off the wind but it's almost sure that this weekend will not help to get rid of some of my overweight of 10 kilo. :D
Will post some pictures. Have a nice weekend all! And beware of dead corpses! :D
Steve, it's great to know I have friends in a Democratic ruled State in the US! That's why you are so much above let's say Texas? :D
