Looks like it's my turn to report a dumb move and potential damage.

While retrieving a shrimp pot at the shipwreck this Saturday, my outdrive got tangled with my shrimp pot line. The engine was idling in neutral, so there was no line on the prop. The high current, 15 minutes of unsuccessful attempts to free the line with a boathook from a swimstep, and approaching deadline of 3 PM added to frustration, and when finally I untangled after raising my Bravo II in trailer position, I did it without shutting the engine down. Even more, as soon as the line was free, I have proceeded to complete the retrieval with the help of the electric pot puller, and my outdrive was idling raised all the way up for another 15-20 minutes. When I was done, and shifted in gear, I immediately noticed the mistake and lowered it down, so there were no "riding" with the outdrive up.

On the way home, I think I felt a difference in the outdrive vibration, it sounded as if it was still up while it was trimmed all the way down.

I probably need to replace the U-Joints, I was planning to do it anyway. Does anyone know if there may be other damaged parts, like gimbal bearing? There were no visible rips on the outside of the bellows, but I have heard some horror stories about the metal reinforcement wire being ripped out on the inside.

To my mind, this one beats cleaning the freezer with sharp objects...
Will be grateful for any experience with similar damage, especially with Bravo outdrives.

You have my sympathy, but you never told us , was there any shrimp in the pot?

How long has it been since the drive was serviced? It may that all you may need is the coupler and spline lubed. I'll cross my fingers for you, but hopefully it's nothing major. Good luck.

You can drive at low speeds with the outdrive up but like any sharp angle, it takes its toll. You will probably need a U joint... not that bad. You could do it with help to get it off but the yard can see what else to replace/repair too. I doubt it would be more than a 1/4 boat buck...

I took the outdrive out last May, no sign of water in bellows, U-Joint bearings looked good, but somewhat loose. I wanted to change them anyway.

I will replace the U-Joints myself. I have a tool, but I have not used it in 10 years, hopefully will find it in the garage. Otherwise, will use my big C-clamp.
In case of other damage, does anyone have experience with Edmonds marina techs, or, maybe, know a good mobile marine mechanic close to Edmonds? I am not ready yet to take on gimbal bearing and bellows replacement.

Yes there were shrimp. For some reason, all pots that day got almost exact amount of 24-25 shrimp each pull... a new world constant. They were standard square pots with plastic mesh funnels.

I have used with success United Marine call Mike Weishaar @ 425-232-4311 cell or 425-257-9461 they have a place in Everett and Seattle, plus they are mobile and used them for my boat in Edmonds.

have a good look at the bellows. it can get chaffed by the drive if you run in the up position. you might get off with no foul. Does the drive make extra noise when cranked to either stop? U joints will make a racket if they are loose and the drive is cranked one direction or the other.

Took off my outdrive yesterday. No rust anywhere, no water in the bellows, gimbal looks good, U-joints look new. Replaced them anyway, they are 16 year old, and have needle "imprints" on the crosses. Have almost greased them with 2-4-C, but at the last moment remembered Mercruiser request to not use anything with teflon (including 2-4-C) on gimbal and U-Joints. Will stop at West Marine today to pick up a tube of QuickSilver "Gimbal & U-Joints" grease. Huge relief that I do not need to change gimbal bearing and bellows at this time. Will put it back together today, test splash tomorrow, and if everything is well, halibut fishing Sunday!

We had a little incident last season where someone forgot to lower the drive from trailer position before starting the engine. At first we thought it did no harm, but eventually the u joints started to make some noise. I took them apart, while they had wear marks, and did not look so bad, I still replaced them, and the noise was gone.
