View Full Version : Stern Tie - How Much Line?
Those of you that run a stern tie to shore in tight anchorages, how much line do you carry with you? What thickness of polypropylene line do you use?

Raul, I carry 350 feet of 5/16" polyprop on a reel. That gives me enough to go from the boat, around a tree or through a ring, then back to the boat. Then I don't have to go ashore again when it's time to leave.

When boating in CanadaI carry a 300' - 5/16" line. Sometimes I wish it were 400' long. 5/16" line is adequate to stern tie a raft of 5 - 24' boats.

Stewart had a nice rig that allowed him to have a reel of line that attached to his stern and he could pay it out and reel it back in. Looked like a hose reel but made out of irrigation piping... Nicely done and it stored out of the way (on his boat)...

I have something similar to this:

...except mine is a heavy plastic material. The crank makes it really easy and fast to retrieve the line.

Harbor freight has these reels for air hoses. $24.99.
Fill it with 5/16" polypropylene and you're in there. Should hold 400' no problem. They also have 600' of poly line for $17.99

Thanks folks. The few times I've done it I've rafted to somebody else. I want to carry some line in case I'm by myself or I'm the first one there.
