As many of you have asked, here are some updates on where I am with the old Carver.

Here's where I was two weeks ago:

Here's the same thing after a full gallon of stripper.

Here's another shot from the front.

No expense spared in instrumentation back in the day huh?

Here's a bargain I ran across earlier this week. 1968 Evinrude Fastwin 18HP motor. Runs like a top. Short shaft, so it might be relegated to a dinghy someday.

Mike looks great. Do the out boards run, and is the wooden hull OK with the on the jack stands?

I guess three votes is the number of times the old owner voted in King CO.

You would be amazed how many yachts come in on trade with the old Coastal Navigator depth sounders on them! Ted :)

Yeppers... everything mechanically is sound. Wood is OK so far. One small area along the keel board that needs recaulked badly, but no rot yet.

That keel board is a solid piece of Oak that is actually 3 boards sandwiched together. The jack stands are only there to slow things down if the straps failed. I have it hanging from nylon straps on the chain fall normally. I just had to slack those to get that area under thge straps done.

That's an old Heath flasher. I okften wonder if the old guy built it?

It still works though. One horn is frozen and one wiper inop, but everything else works. Electric shift 100HP outboard w/electric choke. I need to have a locksmith build a key for me so i can keep the stock ignition. and the spot light is working again.

All right a depth sounder in a box kit, I remember my dad making radio's the same way. Ted :)

Are planing on painting again or varnish the hull?

SomeSailor

Going back with the stock cream-white hull and copper bottom. Those are the original colors I'm finding now. Not sure on the topsides decking. It plywood covered with a sand pebble sort of vinyl material. I may run teak & holly strips instead. I need to chane to a larger rubrail and that would allow me to add the extra 1/4" or so of teak strips. It would look slick.

Yup you will have a boat worth $15K in man hours and supplies, worth about $600! Oh well it gives you a reason for being! Ted

Almost like Jaruba huh?

Here's something for ya Ted.

in 1980...

"Please Don't Go" ... KC & the Sunshine Band was the #1 song in the nation
"Dallas" was the #1 television show.
Mount St. Helens blew up
John Lennon got shot
JR got shot
The first space shuttle had not been launched.
7/11 announces the "Big Gulp"
Sony debuts "The Walkman"
Post It Notes were invented
The first portable video cameras were on sale:

Urban Cowboy had brought jeans to the mainstream:

and Jaruba was built ...

Trust me I do agree with what you say about Jaruba, and yes she is an old gal that I have dumped way more than she is currently worth, but she is like an old pair of really comfy shoes that just fits me right so I'll keep on keeping on with her for now. Ted :)

I think that's Ted with the mustache... he had to change his identity after the 1975 Sears catalog fiasco:

Everyone remember the guy on page 602?

Mike- Whats the long term plans for the old girl? Are you going to keep here or put it up for sale?

SomeSailor
06-27-2005, 11:06 AM
Long term... I plan to remove the trim chines and strip the last of the paint off the hull this afternoon... :)

No real plans to sell it or not. My only point with Ted is I'll never be hurt on what I've got invested.

I would be curious what it's worth though. I've seen many Thompsons running around and for sale, but never a Carver.

I did learn something in my research though. Did you know there is nobody named Carver involved in these?

It was actually CarVer Boats. Charlie Carter and George Verhagen started the business in their garage. Something every day I suppose.

Tedster

I think you have a real gem on your hands once you get her all cleaned up and re-painted. And yes if you sell it you will get all your money back. If you do want to sell it look up the Carver website and list it there. You'd be amazed how many guys that grew up with this boat when they were a kid that would love to have it to keep in their garage and play with it on the lake on occasion. Ted :)

We had a boat stop by for a pit stop on Chelan last weekend. It was 1971 (no name on the hull) boat as clean and shiny hull as I've ever seen. The wind shields had about a 4" of tip out glass near the bottom. What a great idea!
I wish he would have stayed, would have loved to hear about the rest of it

SomeSailor
06-27-2005, 12:21 PM
Mine tip out also. I plan to finish the hull in the next month or so and then remove the windshield and frame and refinish it. I'll decide on what I want to do with the deck by then.

Thanks Brad. She's still got some life left in her. I get the title re-issues October 24th, so the good stuff will have to wait until after then. :)

That's nice knowing about the name!

Btw Verhagen is as Dutch as Dutch can be!

Nice pic's of the project! Why not make it a carrier for the small planes you fly as I understood it !

No, I am sober! :)

Now there's a project worthy of you Mike.
I can see it now- a angled landing deck on the bow with pneumatic cats and arresting gear!

Have you guys seen the one at the port of edmonds, just north of the travel lift, it was looking pretty seedy last year, but its been repainted, etc.

Finally getting some recognizable progress. Getting it all wooded down was pretty boring, but as the caulking and glazing starts happening, she's starting to look like a boat again. The keelboard is all faired and caulked for the forward half of the boat (need to crawl under for the rest), and and i've got everything rebedded and faired for the forward half.

http://www.iboatnw.com/gallery/data/media/71/Bow_Faired_Caulked_and_First_Prime.JPG

Pulled out a bazillion copper staples that hold the vinyl decking material down. Still have no idea where to buy that stuff yet.

http://www.iboatnw.com/gallery/data/media/71/P1010003.JPG

And have started removing the chine boards so the hull can be refinished and the boards stripped and varnished. This'll be the first work I've done on any of the mohagony.

This one has this weird 60'ish vintage vinyl covering. It's a sort of pebble stone looking stuff. Bob had a sample card at one time, but I'm sure there's someplace out there that carries it. I've seen it on deck boats at the boat shows recently.

Neah... it's a weird textured vinyl-cloth stuff. I think it's gonna come down to fabric used on a vinyl top (like on a car).

Still a toss up if I want to go with the original vinyl look, or veneer the deck tops with teak & holly somehow.

Thanks Raul!

That's exactly what I was looking for. I had found it once a couple of years ago, but since I was undecided on how I was going to finish it, and I still needed to wait out the title process (3 year wait), I had since lost it.

It's decked in that "Sandstone" color with a whit stripe down the middle. I'll likely go back with that as the easiest replacement. Gotta get crackin' on the rest of the hull refinishing first though. :)

Thanks again Raul and Bob.

I'm glad you found the material. I often go to Defender.com for had to find stuff. They also have a pretty good printed catalog that you can request.

Raul

SomeSailor

I may give them a call and do just that. I'll need some samples, but it looks identical to the material left on there now.

Thanks again.

I've been thinking of getting a small square of this stuff to glue to my boat's swimstep, right below where I store the dinghy motor. When I remove the motor from the dinghy I set the skeg on the step and steady the motor until I can get on the step myself. Then I lift it on to the stowage mount. The swimstep is a bit slippery for this and I worrry that the motor is going to slide and fall.
