View Full Version : Senator John Glen's statement

this is an email that I got....don't really care if it's a good one as in authentic or exposed as a fake from snoops....but it says alot....and I thought it say's enough to post....enjoy!!! :argh arr

Subject: FW: Senator John Glenn said things to make you think a little

Regardless of your political views, this certainly gives us all food for
thought. I didn't think Sen. Glenn was so quick on his feet. But when you
speak from the heart and with passion, you never know what comes out.

-------SENATOR JOHN GLENN SAID:
Things that make you think a little........
1. There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq during the month of
January..... In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the month
of January. That's just one American City, about as deadly as the entire
war
torn country of Iraq.

2. When some claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war, state
the following ..

FDR...led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did.
From
1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.

Truman...finished that war and started one in Korea, North Korea never
attacked us. >From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,334
per year.

John F. Kennedy. .started the Vietnam conflict in
1962. Vietnam never attacked us. Johnson...turned Vietnam into a
quagmire.
>From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average of 5,800 per year.

Clinton...went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent, Bosnia never
attacked us. He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times
by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.

3. In the two years since terrorists attacked us President Bush has
liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida, put
nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran and North Korea without firing a shot,
and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.

The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but...It
took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch
Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation.

We've been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time
than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy
the Medina Republican Guard than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police
after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick killing a woman.

Wait, there's more.......................

Some people still don't understand why military personnel do what they do
for a living. This exchange between Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard
Metzenbaum is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive impromptu
speech, but it's also a good example of one man's explanation of why men
and
women in the armed services do what they do for a living. This is a
typical,
though sad, example of what some who have never served think of our
military.

JOHN GLENN ON THE SENATE FLOOR Date: Mon, 26 Jan 2004 11:13

Senator Howard Metzenbaum to Senator Glenn: "How can you run for Senate
when you've never held a real job?"

Senator Glenn: "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I
served through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by
antiaircraft fire on 12 different occasions. I was in the space program.

It wasn't my checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was not a
nine-to-five job, where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to
the bank. I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day... to a
veteran's hospital and look those men - with their mangled bodies - in the
eye, and tell THEM they didn't hold a job! You go with me to the Space
Program at NASA and go, as I have gone, to the widows and orphans of Ed
White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee... and you look those kids in the eye
and tell them that their Dads didn't hold a job.

You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in Arlington National
Cemetery, where I have more friends buried than I'd like to remember, and
you watch those waving flags.

You stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell ME that
those people didn't have a job? I'll tell you, Howard Metzenbaum; you
should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there
were some men - SOME MEN - who held REAL jobs. And they required a
dedication to a purpose - and a love of country and a dedication to duty
that was more important than life itself. And their self-sacrifice is
what
made this country possible.

I HAVE held a job, Howard! What about you?"
For those who don't remember - During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an
attorney representing the Communist Party in the USA

If you can read this, thank a teacher.... If you are reading it in English
thank a Veteran. Please keep this circulating.

don't really care if it's a good one as in authentic or exposed as a fake from snoops

Welll it actually is a fake Steve. Why would you not care? How do you know that any of it is even factual? You can't take things from the internet as fact at face value. That's just being gullable.

This is what John Glenn said:

Howard Metzenbaum to John Glenn:

Metzenbaum: "How can you run for Senate when you've never held a 'job'?"

Glenn: "I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps. I was through two wars. I flew 149 missions. My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different occasions.

"I was in the space program. It wasn't my checkbook, it was my life that was on the line. This was not a 9-to-5 job where I took time off to take the daily cash receipts to the bank.

"I ask you to go with me, as I went the other day to a Veterans Hospital, and look those men with their mangled bodies in the eye and tell them they didn't hold a job.

"You go with me to any Gold Star mother, and you look her in the eye and tell her that her son did not hold a job.

"You go with me to the space program, and you go as I have gone to the widows and the orphans of Ed White and Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee, and you look those kids in the eye and tell them that their dad didn't hold a job.

"You go with me on Memorial Day coming up, and you stand on Arlington National Cemetery — where I have more friends than I like to remember — and you watch those waving flags, and you stand there, and you think about this nation, and you tell me that those people didn't have a job.

"I tell you, Howard Metzenbaum, you should be on your knees every day of your life thanking God that there were some men — SOME MEN — who held a job. And they required a dedication to purpose and a love of country and a dedication to duty that was more important than life itself.

"And their self-sacrifice is what has made this country possible.

"I HAVE HELD A JOB, HOWARD!"

He said nothing about Iraq whatsoever. This was simply a reply over Metzenbaum stating John Glenn never held a job.

John Glenn Hoax (http://www.snopes.com/politics/quotes/glenn.asp)

Here's what you said:

about as deadly as the entire war torn country of Iraq.
Heard of any IEDs going off in Mukilteo lately?

The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but...It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51-day operation.
We don't "have" Iraq yet.

I didn't think Sen. Glenn was so quick on his feet.
He's not... you quoted someone elses "quick thinking".

He's a great guy and a true American Hero. I ate lunch at his table aboard USS Constellation in 1994. He was there with four remaining Astronauts who walked on the surface of the moon. True heros.

whoa there mikey!!...I just wrote the first paragraph stating that I didn't care if it was factual...and your stating that I wrote.....I didn't write any of it...it was an email sent to me and thought IT said alot.....I do care if it's factual and according to your post ...you added the copy of the exact same statement of Sen. Glen....

"this is an email that I got....don't really care if it's a good one as in authentic or exposed as a fake from snoops....but it says alot....and I thought it say's enough to post....enjoy!!! "....this is what I wrote....that's all..nothing else....I clearly state it was an email sent to me......so....people can take it with a grain of salt or sand .......
and no I haven't heard of an IED going off in mukilteo....just the usual shootings and stabbings.......I figure the IED's will come next....

Was that perhaps before further spreading the drivle that comes around through email... Google it and see if it's true.

Takes all of two seconds.

It's a pet peeve of mine. So much good information on the internet... but also so much crap.

I personally disagree with the comparison of Iraq to Detroit. Or that we "took" Iraq in less than 51 days. It's not over my friend. I don't like either side exagerating the mess we're in over there.

By quoting your post... I wasn't saying YOU said anything... just what your post said.

Read what Snopes has to say about it. Someone has "piggy-backed" the whole Iraq mess onto the front of a press release by Senator Glenn.

There's another twist to it. It acuses that Howard Metzenbaum worked as an attorney for the Communist Party during World War II. That's not true either.

oh...I agree that there is alot of trash on the net.....and I agree that we're not done over the either....we won't be done over in iraq until we can close the door or turn it into a glass parking lot.....but the comparason to detroit or where ever I think is apprapoe in so much the fact that just last weekend here in seattle and it's burbs was about 5 killings....in one weekend we have one of the most deadly cities in the west.....yet the news is screaming cuz we've lost over 1700 service men and women in iraq since the war started.....we average about 2 a day killed in the streets and people are just insensitive to that fact.....amazing.....

....we won't be done over in iraq until we can close the door or turn it into a glass parking lot.....

"Glass Parking Lot" ... sure glad you're not in politics Steve. :)

... in one weekend we have one of the most deadly cities in the west.....

That's a crazy comparison Steve... When you have 5 dead in a weekend. How does that earn you the title "deadliest in the West?

.....yet the news is screaming cuz we've lost over 1700 service men and women in iraq since the war started.....we average about 2 a day killed in the streets and people are just insensitive to that fact.....amazing.....

I'm sensitive to the fact that the 1,700 lost in Iraq are America's finest. They are our sons and daughters, our volunteer soldiers. They're in harms way because we put them there. A LOT of difference between that and a teenager shot at an underage party, or killed in a domestic dispute.

We have a responsibility to them Steve. My ffeling is we're drawing near the end of the military responsibility in this (or past it). Its a police action now. We should move on soon or at least put in motion a plan to do so.

Seapuppy
06-27-2005, 12:34 PM
I don't disagree with you on how and when we should move on from iraq....yeah..we put them there....and it has gone beyond war to a police action the second you call a hostile action over....
but here in the US...in seattle...we have on average 1-2 killings a day....
dead is dead mike and although we call ourselves a civilized society...we aren't that civilized when we have our kids kill each other over stupid stuff like tennis shoes or beer drinking......and this is just one city in the US that has this many killings...what about the others...detroit...LA..Houston....San Francisco......Miami...New York...DC???.....how many die each day to killings in each city in the US???....and yet this doesn't nearly add up to the total number lost in iraq during this whole so called war.....
whether you agree with me on this or not is immaterial cuz I was just saying that the original email said alot...whether it was fact based or not didn't matter to me since I put it on the dockwalk as a read...not as fact and I even stated so.....now to turn it into a political discussion is rather ludicrous cuz it isn't a fact based statement.....
if this was a fact based email I would have included it here on the below the waterline or whatever your calling this part of the site....then it would have warranted a good discussion......

Don't worry over it Ted. If you don't like... don't read it.

My bad for getting it started in Dock Walk. Didn't even notice until I started talking with Steve about it. It's probably better suited for the "Below the Waterline" forum.

Even made Top 50 in THE WORLD.

My only point is that SOMEONE (not you Steve), saw fit to add entire paragraphs to what Senator Glenn ACTUALLY said... and now it's going around riding on the coat tails of his reputation. He didn't say any of that... so don't quote him.

Many things make interesting reads... as long as they're true. Feel free to post anything you like. If it might get partisan (as this email is intented to be), lets keep it in here.

You have more than exercised your "right " to post as you see fit, true or not, interesting or not, pertinent or not, funny or not and in good taste or not. It's not the firt time I see posts of this kind appear before my eyes here and at BOC. What is the emaning and the goal to achieve by the original writers and those who post this idiotery sorry have another much stronger word for it
but as a moderator I must keep it civil.

Today over here in Europe we have groups of young men, the Neo-Nazi's in a lot of countries. And they are denying that the Holocaust was a reality and say all the old movies about the gas chambers and mass executions where proganda of the Jewish and never took place.

I am just waiting for the time to come, them hear to agree that the Nazi's indeed killed 6 million jews but that it was done to stop over population in Europe so it could develope in a peoperous way. Hiroshima Nagasaki?

My original point Roel. We need to be careful when we spread things around. People read these often enough... and they become the truth.

What I find particularly upsetting is when they use the poplularity of someone else, or misinterpret facts. It often makes you wonder what the meain is behind it.
