Well, this has been coming for a long time. The US Department of the Interior has dropped funding for the operation of the Willamette Falls Locks at West Linn Oregon. This cuts off travel on the Willamette River between Portland and all ports upstream of the falls.

The locks have been in operation since 1873, and are listed on the National Historical Site registry.

One of the commissioners of Oregon City has suggested that the Port of Portland take over operation of the locks, but nothing has been done to make it happen. It seems unlikely that the feds will fund the locks again.

Everyone who boats the Willamette River has an interest in keeping the locks operating. Please contact your community leaders and agitate for them to work on finding money to fund the locks.

There's been talk about cutting back hour of operations and vistors to the Chittenden Locks (Ballard) as well!
