Hi,
I requested a survey for a used Bayliner Ciera Classic Cruiser 2452 XL 2001 model.
Its engine is the 5.7 MerCruiser Bravo II Sterndrive 250 hp diesel.

For some reason the surveyor’s mechanic remarked that although nothing is wrong with this particular engine, generally this engine has caused a lot of maintenance problems since it was introduced and has devalued the boat considerably. Further more he remarked that a wise buyer would keep clear from a boat with this engine.

Since I am not a mechanic myself I assured the buyer I would get Bayliner’s comment on this.
Any information add would be appreciated.

I've recently seen similar issues with them. My personal opinion is they're a strong motor, that are forced to operate in much higher RPMs than they should for a diesel. I don't know what the bottom line is, but they're expensive if they quit on ya.

SS is this same engine that's on Harry's boat?

Yeah.

I don't want to bad talk any particular configuration or specific boat... but I've always felt that Italian diesel was getting wound too tight at cruise RPMS.

Hard call though. It's certainly sad with Harry's though. He just finished all that work at midnight the night before and decided to make the trip. I guess the ride up was flawless too. We'll have to wait and see what the mechanic says. I sure hope its something simple.
