OK... finally broke down and bought a new TV last night. Picked up a very cool Samsung 3D LED 55" model.

It sure is amazing how far they've come. The 3D is amazing. It's like you're looking into a window to a whole different world. We went for the UN558000 and Best Buy has a pretty good package deal going on the whole deal. Even got them to toss in a $129 HDMI cable at the last minute (the 3D requires a 15.8Gb cable)

I'm looking at the smaller model for our bedroom. I will look at replacing the Samsung Plasma in the family room after they come out with the new 3D coming out in a couple of years that does not require glasses...

Now you need to buy the Samsung blue ray that allows internet downloading of Pandora, Netflix or Blockbuster... all you can watch for $10/month...

3D without glasses is nowhere near, and even worse nowhere near what I can afford for TV. This TV up-converts 2D TV to 3D, and both the BluRay player and TV are internet connected. We can watch both Netflicks or Blockbuster movies in HD streaming all day long for $8.99. The 3D is very cool and the picture of the LED is amazing.

Just when these panel TV's began to become affordable 3D comes along and changes that.
Sounds cool though, I have not gone to check em out yet but doubt I would buy just yet. Been to soon since our last TV purchase .

Plasma, LED, 3D and now Laser! I keep waiting for the next best thing but who knows when it's going to stop!

Stange, this thread keeps coming up as being new but there aren't any new entries and I cannot get rid of it. Maybe it is haunted, like Ted's mysterious Active X notice?

yeah, I noticed the same thing. Since there is no new info, I will delete it... or at least close it for now...

There was just a spam post tacked on the end. No need to close it.

Couple weeks back Fred Meyer had the smaller version of what SS had bought in the Samsung brand for 1,900 I think it was either 50 or 52 inch. Came with 2 sets of 3d glasses.
I did take the time to put on glass's and watch and it is really cool , I did not like how much more they charged for extra glasses tho, I think I was quoted around 140 bucks a pair.
I told my wife I was gonna drag her up there to check the 3D set out, I was impressed.

Yeah. We haggled and got the third pair thrown in on ours through Best Buy. It's simply an amazing TV. It also up-converts normal 2D TV to 3D also. We enjoy watching Survivor in 3D even though it's native 2D HD broadcast. Really stunning. X-Box games in 3D are stunning too.

Plus it's just a damned nice TV. :)

I'm waiting for laser TV... before we move to the 3D experience. I'm happy with the Samsung 50 we have and hopefully, it will last until laser is out and the 3D without glasses is home ready by then too.

Guess its a good thing we never watched any reality shows... (including the Oscars)... ;}

Just a heads up, our 52 is fairly new, I'm pretty sure Doug and I bought close to the same time.....any hoot our set went out a couple weeks back. Warranty is up, we called Samsung and they set us up with a service tech who came out and made repairs. The problem was 2 of the 4 capacitors went out, because they were faulty parts Samsung covered the repair for us at zero cost.
I guess a couple models were effected , ours being one of them.

Yes, we do have similar models and we had the front screen drop down inside the frame after warranty and Samsung said it was a defect and paid for a new glass front and the installation saying it was a workmanship issue also... Apparently we run ours on about 18 hours a day and the heat dried out the glue they used for the front screen. I was pleasantly surprised about them covering the warranty. I also downloaded a special firmware file they sent me. Suppose to make the TV even better... Not sure how it imporves but we love the picture... Hopefully, this TV will last until the new 3D is available without the need for 3D glasses. I know it is in testing stages now... I can wait...

We have been waiting for some time to replace the t.v. in the living room but the thing won't die. 32" and 32" deep weighs about 150lbs. Not sure I could get it out. We may just have to build around it.

We had a 35" that weighed a ton. The Admiral and I dragged it out and I slide it into the truck bed from our raised deck with much effort... Goodwill took it off our hands... Two young bucks grabbed it with some effort... It was a great TV and we had a nice write off. We'll never go back to the old tube again...

The 55" Samsung is an amazing TV. The 3D is awesome, but more importantly, it's just a really cool TV. Internet connectivity gives you the capability to disconnect from cable if you wanted to as well. We really like ours. As far as weight, I hung mine on the wall myself. Crazy how light they are becoming.

I can remember the 36 inch Sony Trinitron that we got rid of before moving up here. Man what a monster. One thing though, it had a great picture and it had amazing sound. There were times you could have sworn that it was hooked up to a suround system with only the tv's speakers.
It had just gone out so I wasn't too worried about hurting it. Still It took two of us to lift it into the back of the truck. When I got to the recycling center I warned the two young studs who went to unload it. They both laughed at first then they lifted it and I could swear that one had a tear forming by the time they got to the bin.
We are looking forward to having a bigger set for the salon, when we get the next boat. Won't be 3D but it will be a nice size for the space.

We're about ready to get a new TV. We have an old Sony that has seen much better days. If I understand correctly, your Samsung converts 2D into 3D correct? As for connecting to the internet, how did you do this? I have fiber optics and my local telephone company supplies the internet (for a price). I use a router to connect both a desktop and a laptop computer to the net.

Mine has a small USB WiFi dongle on the back (plugged into one of it's USB slots). You can also wire it in directly to your router with a cable connection. You just treat it as any other computer in the house. The 3D BluRay also has internet capability, but it gets it's connection through the TV. Quite nice actually.

Direct connection to the internet via your router should be better than wifi... At least mine is. I have the dongle and then tried direct connect via LAN and it works much better and is more reliable. We normally have three wifi machines running at any one time so that may be a factor too. We use an "N" router.

What also helps is the size of the thumb drive you can insert for preloading of movies or other internet loads. Mine is a 16 gig and handles all our wifi needs with no degradation to the signals... 1 or more gig was recommended for our Samsung system.

I also connected a swing box for on road movies. That works well.

I just replaced our TV with a Vizio 55" Costco special. It sure is amazing. I just ran an additional HDMI through the wall to where I keep the video games and sattelite box. I just plug that into the laptop and with my wireless keyboard and mouse I have a 55" monitor. It is pretty cool.

I have the same Sony Trinitron that Papa is talking about that I replaced. Bought it seven years ago for $3600. The picture on it is amazing and the sound is like having a seperate surround sound. I miss the sound. I need to get something to beef up the new TV. When I was looking at TV's I noticed that many of them are 120hz (which I think is refresh rate?) and if you want to spend the extra $$ you can get 240hz. That old Sony that I have is 280hz. I will be lucky to get $200 for it now. Funny thing is, in October I spent $380 to fix the motherboard in it. Then my wife gets a new couch and the old TV has to go.....anyone want to buy a nice TV cheap?

All 3D TVs have to be 240hz, but that's because they need to talk bidirectionally to the BluRay player. So besides the 3D, you get an amazing TV as well.

We bought the 55" Vizio 3D at Costco last month. Our 8 year old Sony got zapped by lighting via the telephone line connected to our DirecTV system. We lost the green gun. It was a rear projection tv.

The 3D is great! The glasses that have the battery built in are a little heavy on your nose, at least on my nose. They sell a set of glasses that do not have a battery built in. We're going to get a pair of those for the grand kids. They should be lighter.

What a difference between a rear projection tv and an LED tv and HD. HD in itself is a vast improvement.

Yep. It's a pretty amazing jump in technology. Well worth the money if you're TV junkies like we are.
