I finally received the package I've been waiting for. I ordered an Apple iPad 3G last month and I must say it's a pretty cool gizmo. AT&T budged at the last minute and set up a no-contract, on-demand 3G package so between the built-in WiFi and cell connection, its got some cool boating application.

I really like the speed and graphics. It's got GPS like the iPhone and can make calls over Skype (has speaker and mic unlike the touch). It doesn't have a camera, but does have the ability to talk to a camera or read from a card.

Overall, a VERY cool new gadget. It'll be great for cruising the web on the boat or keeping in touch. Anybody else bought one of these or thinking of buying one?

I'm waiting for the PC version this summer and then decide. To me the Ipad is a big Iphone. I do like the animated book reading and think that will sink the Kindle. Will wait for prices to drop on other than Apple products at this time. But from what I have seen, the Ipad is pretty cool...

yeah... That's really what t is. Nice that ATT fixed the 3G rates. No contracts and good speed. We're driving up to get a haircut now. Neat to be online while mobile so easily.

I had my hands on a 3g this week. Very pretty. I wish Att wasn't such a crappy carrier. They blocked internet sharing (unlike the Euro-iPad).
Very fast and cool.

I was thinking of using my AirCard while on the boat, but AT&T has an unlimited month to month rate at $30, so I'll use that for now and see. They've really opened up the 3G and I'm getting just under 3MB/sec downloads and that's outrunning my Verizon.

If the 3G is too spotty I might use my Verizon access, but it's not true 'unlimited' like the AT&T is for $10 cheaper. It'll be nice for watching movies or catching up on shows while on the boat.

I should've bought several of those. They are REALLY nice machines and for $600 on Woot.com they were a real steal.

For anyone who has an iPad, I have converted Sea Magazine to PDF.
You can d/l them here (http://www.macplus.com/Sea/)

I would suggest using Goodreader (http://www.goodiware.com/goodreader.html) to view.

For those of you who have not jailbroken your iPhone, a new jailbreak is out that is plane simple. You can get it here ( Spirit Jailbreak (http://spiritjb.com/) ).

Then you can install MyWi and use it as a mobile hotspot.

We bought an iPad without the 3G. Wasn't quite ready to go yet another $30/month for a data plan (we both have iPhones). Love it for travelling - movies look great and kindle works very well on it. Of course, the hotel I was at recently had WIRED internet access... so I was rethinking the 3G thing.

Not sure I see it on the boat, yet. We are using the Dell laptop for backup charts with a GPS puck, DVDs at anchor, and presumably, wireless access where available.

As Scott posted prior, the new jail break takes about 1 min to do and no problems. I have yet to try the Iphone on my puter but from all indications, its a peace of cake... will work but will deplete your IPhone battery pretty fast if not kept plugged in to 12v...

PDAnet is not as easy to set up and use, also the free version only good for HTML, you need the full paid ($29.99) version for sling box and some e-mail. MyWi is superior.

Has anyone had a chance to use their Ipad for navigating yet? I've read alot of pro's & con's on this, but wanted to get some feedback from people that actually use it. Some of the con's have been:

Not waterproof. I've seen some waterproof cases that they have for them, should take care of that issue (I think)

Glare in sun. I checked it out at the Apple store, and took it outside in the sun - seemed fine to me. Then again, I wasn't wearing my sunglasses. Any real life feedback on this?

The maps don't turn around as your boat turns and it makes it hard to read the chart info. I don't have an Iphone or anything like that so not able to understand the problem. Again any feedback?

I'm sure their are other problems that I haven't read about - Any more thoughts on others?

I like the idea of being able to get on the internet while out - check weather (prefer visual than VHF), email etc. The Ipad would also come in handy for work, instead of lugging our big laptop to customer's houses. It would be nice to have something that works for multiple applications - but is it realistic? We currrenty navigate with a GPS connected to laptop (cumbersome) and have a spare handheld GPS and charts for backup (and 2 depth sounders). I like having backup systems.

If the budget allowed it that new Garmin GPS740 with the integrated radar would be great, but the fuel tank is thirsty!

Thanks much -
Felicia & Pep

Not waterproof. I've seen some waterproof cases that they have for them, should take care of that issue (I think)

That wouldn't be a problem on an enclosed helm.

Glare in sun. I checked it out at the Apple store, and took it outside in the sun - seemed fine to me. Then again, I wasn't wearing my sunglasses. Any real life feedback on this?

The glare is an issue. I think it'll be fine for mine as I have a hardtop.

That should be a non-issue. Matter of fact, it's better than my boat as it has a magnetic compass to keep north up. You can also set it to do heading or course up (my preference).

I got a chance to see Mike's "pad" :) in action and it would be a great tool if you are not going to use it in direct sun light. Plus look at all the other things you can do with it that a Plotter can't. It wouldn't replace a plotter but if I had a small screen plotter this would make a great addition.

This has only been on the market a few weeks now. Even the non-3G models have only been out for a month or two.

Mine is a 64GB model and I've only managed to put a few GB on it. The applications are small and they run fast. They're very cool gizmos and definitely have their place. Are they chart plotters? No, but they have tons of cool uses on the boat.

I hope you're not waiting for the Microsoft Courier... they canceled it a few weeks back.

The thing that keeps both the iPad and the iPhone at the top of the list is the MultiTouch technology they've got. Many other displays are 'close' but not as intuitive or accurate.

Yep. Never said they were a replacement for a chartplotter Ted.

They are however a neat addition to a boat. They can function as a chartplotter, carry all of the manuals for your boat, keep you on the internet, watch movies or TV in real time, play games or a million other things. I use mine every day. It's much more useful than you'd imagine... especially on a boat.

Well I guess that is why I'm different, when I'm boating, that is all I want to do, just go boating and get away from it all. I don't need to know anything that is happening anywhere except where I am at the time! Besides the world will go on without me for a few days! Yeah, the new navigation gear is kind of mesmerizing. I have to continually remind myself to keep an eye out on the water. I think it will get easier to do as I get accustomed to the chartplotter, and find the settings and display the information that I really want instead of constantly fooling around with the buttons.

Nothing wrong with learning to dead reckon your way around the Sound, but the new technology sure makes it nicer and safer. One of the cooler things I purchased app-wise is a program called ShipFinderHD. It's an iPad optimized AIS system. The app is free, but for like $6.99 you get the live feeds. I've been testing it all week at work. A commercial ship goes by... and there it is. Name, destination, speed, draft, even pictures of the boat.

Technically, it wasn't Apple but AT&T's system that was hacked is the way I read this. Still if Apple uses systems from outside their own then any system that Apple allows to interface with its own opens the potential for some one to hack into the Apple system.

"Apple not Hackable" is more a factor of no one bothering yet.

Actually, we'd just left the Apple Store after buying HER iPad 3G... so she was fine with it. I was showing her some features.

Of course, no contract means $50 for activation, and $125 for the device. The device is 4G and 3G. It looks like you can get 4G in Friday harbor with it. I am thinking about getting one for the summer since I need to be online with work 24/7. AT&T does not cut it for the northern San Juans, unless you have a clear view of Mt. Constitution.

uys anyone else care to jump in here, I'm wanting to know the real deal and see if I can rationalize the upgrade!!

Ted I think you might be a little confused.
The iPad (http://www.apple.com/ipad/) is not a cell phone. It uses AT&T's 3G cell network for data only. NO phone calls. Great device for browsing web, checking e-mail, watching movies.
http://www.macplus.com/IBNW/iPad.jpg
iPad 3G can get a data plan for $30 for unlimited data (soon to change to metered data)

The iPhone (http://www.apple.com/iphone/) is a cell phone that you can also do the things that an iPad can do, just a smaller screen.
http://www.macplus.com/IBNW/iPhone.jpg

The iPhone will cost you $15 - $25 / month for data and you also need a cell plan that I believe start at $59 / month + tax and other fees.

I am going to get one... might work some OT to fund it! I know a guy that has one, and he claims it has virtually replaced his laptop for most things it was used for: Internet and e-mail. Plus he uses it for reading books, watching movies, sharing pictures, etc, which it does way better than a laptop....

I like the idea of the month-by-month, no contract data plan, but I don't think I'll be able to buy one before the unlimited data plan is no longer available. I need to pay for some upcoming boating excursions instead!

Not sure when they're REALLY gonna run out... We got Diane signed up last Friday (a full week after it officially ended)

Well, I sit in a nice air conditioned Navy barge tethered to the internet via my cell phone thanks to Scott who showed me the way... Kinda cool being able to use the laptop to post vice the Iphone the check in on line. Very easy too. Just plugged in the IPhone and selected Mywi and here we are... Tethering is currently running at 3.27 mb up and 80.65mb down... Not bad being in the center of an all steel barge...

Its hot and sunny here... in case anyone wanted to know... ;}

For $60 a month I get about 3.41 up and 1.51 down. Not bad service for what you already pay for. I am super jeqalous of you in the sunshine. This is getting rediculous here. We are heading to NY this week. It will be warm but humid I am sure.

You can teather the iphone with the new 4.0 software that just came out today.

AT&T is still spotty up at Sucia and Patos island. I was getting AT&T half of the time, and when I moved around the islands I would get Rodgers. I suspect Rodgers is some Canadian Carrier?

AT&T officially killed the unlimited plan for the iPad today:

well, I would not think I'd want to tether using the AT&T software. Probably tracked useage and easier for them to shut you down.

Would it be possible to tether my iPhone to an Ipad?

If you're tethered to a laptop, it would work for an iPad. It doesn't know what is providing it's wifi. I think it would would work. We can try it in Friday Harbor if ya want.

It looks Doug's solution of using MyWi for the iPhone works, and people are using it to tether their iPads to their iPhones with success. It only costs $9.99 for the app.

if you use MyWi on an iPhone, the iPhone just acts as a wi-fi hot spot. You can "Tether" anything to it that uses 802.11b/g. I have had 2 old iphones, 2 ipads, and 2 older laptops all online at the same time. Bad news for parents, Nintendo DS is not able to use it as a hotspot.

It looks as though you can only tether to iPhones that are on your Apple account. So much for tethering to someone else.

Well, I toasted my Iphone... I inadvertantly updated to 4.0 OS and I had to restore to factory settings so now I have to wait before jailbreaking to the newer 4.0 Operating system. Guess I was too tired to read the update when I did it. Took a few mins to fix my phone but now have to wait to be able to tether again... The new jailbreak is being built now and will be available soon. May be able to do that sometime this weekend...

Speaking of iPhone. The new O/S is pretty cool. Also, I just got done testing a couple of the new iPhone 4's for work and could not reproduce the issues that people are having. So, I ordered up a couple of new phones.

I have been running 4 on my 3 phone for just over a week. Big improvement in speed and the inbox setup. Spellcheck is also an about time feature, but boy does she burn thru the battery quick. It's an issue I hope they address.

It is raining down here (Bellevue). Is it busy in Bowman Bay? I was there two weeks ago and nobody was on the floating dock or tied up to the buoys.

Which slingbox do you have? I was thinking about purchasing the HD unit, but I want to know if it is worth it and if the picture is very clear streaming the larger amount of data.

The slingbox is a great app for the iPhone/ iPad, you should also get AirVideo (http://www.inmethod.com/air-video/index.html), it lets you stream all your own videos from your home server.

Ok, just doing some investigating and looks like you can save a hundred bucks off the price of the pad by avoiding the 3g feature. Our first pad has it but we don't intend on using apple carrier so if just paying for wireless and using our own connections seem to bring a lower cost. We have Clear ( 4g) and ordered a pod from them for mulitple hook ups.
Not sure if this is realized or not by others or if you have any more info on this please share.
Thanks

You're not signing any contract with Apple. The 3G model has a month-to-month AT&T option. You can always use a wifi access point as well. I decided the 3G models would have better value long-term for us by being able to use them anywhere, even internationally if desired.
