I went to check the brake fluid level on my new toy's trailer, and found that none of my screwdrivers would work to unscrew the plug, nor could I find one at Ace/HD/Lowes, etc. The plug is 3/4 of an inch in diameter, and the slot for a 'screwdriver' runs the full width. Is there a special tool for removing it, or do I just need a bigger screwdriver? It wouldn't budge with my largest screwdriver, and I started to damage the slot, so I stopped. It's obviously been awhile since the previous owner checked it, and I may need to use a torch to free the threads, though I've got some LiquidWrench soaking on it, for now.

I just checked my West Marine catalog and there are two Universal deck plate keys listed. One of the gizmos has a slot type key that looks like it would work. Check at westmarine.com and search for universal deck plate keys.

If you're referring to the Perco deck plate keys, they are too wide (my slot is only 3/4 of an inch, and recessed, so nothing wider will fit), and those keys are made of plastic, so that won't work. If you are referring to some other item, please let me know. BTW...I just joined their 'Silver' club, and ordered a catalog.
Thanks,

Can you use a short length of 1/8 X 3/4 flat bar (steel) and a cresent wrench?

Having that much trouble I would just go ahead and tear it down and remove the MC from the hitch
and get it out on he bench that way if its gone completley dry and rusted internally in the reservoir and bore.
You can make your decision at that point to hone it and rebuild or decide to replace it.
Dot 3 fluid has a bad habit of drawing in moisture if not maintained.

That would give you the best shot at salvaging the master cylinder too. PB Blaster and a decent vise will be your friend I suspect.

Use the back of a butter knife for now. Place the sharper end in a vice grip wrench for leverage and twist remembering lefty loosey... Of course I'd use one of the older butter knives...

O.K. I'll go ahead and remove the whole unit, then mess with it in the shop. Thanks for the info!
