We are heading up to the San Juans (July 17-21) for a shakedown cruise of the new 3870. We are looking for recommendations for places to purchase fresh seafood (fish, oysters) on the islands.
Thanks in advance.

wescott bay by Roche Harbor. Crabbing starts the 15th, but if you want fresh crab and shrimp to buy, the shack at the bottom of the main ramp at Friday Harbor has both, and fresh seafood of all types.

That's exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. Thanks!

Roche also has a sea food shack. It is at the bottom of the new ramp by the Lime Kiln cafe. The same ramp with the Ocean Alexander Yacht sales boats on it. The guy goes out every morning and pulls his pots. From what I have heard the Westcot bay oyster farm closed this year, I can not verify it but that is what I have been told. WE used to take the Dingy over from Roche and go to the end of the bay, tie up to the dock and walk in to buy stuff.

We took advantage of the Roche sea food shack when we were there at the end of June. They had crab and spot prawns. We got a dozen prawns, and I have to say, they were excellent. We are looking for a bit more variety this time - some salmon for the grill, and Gwen REALLY wants some oysters.

fried? what? why would you do that to a perfectly delectable bivalve? barbaric!
If you can't man one down, try this: Soak in seawater, throw on the hot grill until the first one or two pop, pop them all, then a teaspoon of hot cocktail and a bacon square until the sauce is warm.
Mama nature made them pretty good by themselves, though.

I have never smoked my own oysters but I love smoked oysters. Tell me how you do it if you would. How long etc.

Last night was the first time for me and I Have about a pint left, that I will do tonight. I put then on or in a baking tin or pan, Added lemon juice, garlic, Tabasco, and olive oil. I put them in the oven at 350 till they were about 1/2 to 3/4 done. That is when I started thinking about smoked oysters and beer. We have a propane fired smoker oven on the deck. I put some alder chips in the smoker fired it up and finished the oysters with alder smoke. My son-in-law and I washed them down with home brew. Life is good!

We use Tod's recipe and lay a bunch on the BBQ and when they start to open, shuck them and put motzerella cheese on top with a dash or two of tobasko sauce. Serve when the cheese melts...

I do it that way too. I have about 50 variations of that recipe. I also do this when camping and just throw them right on the coals in an open fire.
