Ok gentleman, can you help a lady out? I have a 2000 Maxum 2400SCR, with a 5.0 liter Alpha out drive. When under way she surges (feels like she is starving and running out of gas) and then she dies altogether. Usually this happens at 2000 rpms or better, basically anytime I bring her up on plane. It's not bad gas, just replaced the fuel pump & filter (pump was bad, but still having the problem but at least this pump keeps trying). I'm stumped...any help would be greatly appreciated.

are there 2 filters ??one being the spin on and one being an inline filter???
have you checked the pickup in the tank??...it may be blocked there....the only other place is a small filter in the carb itself........but I'd be willing to be it's the fuel pickup inside the tank...... :argh

Are you getting anything out of the old filters? Pour in some clean gas (into the filter), swoosh it around and then dump into a quart jar. You might have only gotten part of it. Also... plugs, cap & rotor replaced? (had to ask)

Next guess might be carb primaries gummed up. Enlist the help of a freind and CAREFULLY stand beside the engine while its running (watch the fingers and lose clothes) and bring it up to a fast idle. WIth the spark arresstor removed... Quickly place both hands over the carb throat and actuallly try to choke the motor down. By blocking the intake, you'll drastically increase the suction and sometimes can free up some small gunk in the orifices. Carb cleaner down the throat can also help. (careful with the fumes)

If all else fails... if you're on Whidbey... Flowers Marine is probably the best marine service guys around.

Surging Update...Boat is up and running again. The check ball just after the fuel tank was all gunked up and blocking fuel flow (filter was missing, need to get a replacement filter). I did a little test drive after cleaning that out and she purred like a kitten. Took her out to Rosario on Sunday and got back last night. There were a couple of times where she pulled her surging trick again. Just cleaned out that fitting and she was up and moving. Made sure to clean that out each time I fueled up and before we left the marinas (got less gunk each time til I had none at all). I'm very happy to get her going again. What a novel idea, a boat that runs...

... and a wrench that removes it :)

I forgot this very important tidbit myself...

It sounds like you have some gunk in the tank that keeps clogging the valve. Put a high quality fuel tank/fuel cleaner additive in for a tank or two. Clean the valve and change filters a couple of more times.
