View Full Version : Retirement

Yesterday I decided to go for my retirement within a couple of weeks! :D
I was playing with the idea for a long time already.
The Company I work for is private owned by two brothers at ages of 70 and 68 years.
Due to the very bad situation in the Printing business of which printers and those who sell machinery suffer terrible and as there is no light to be seen at the end of the tunnel in the near future, they were unable to sell the Company.
Closing down was an option but they decided to look for a successor who will lead the Company. They stay involved as shareholders of a holding. So far so good. With both I have very good relations and I know that's a two way even. But very important to me the personal contact kept the joy alive needed to work in such a down market. I feared, no was certain that would go away if they retire at the end of the year. So I wondered if it wasn't time for me to make the way, instead of staying for 3 more years wondering every day, if I still liked what I was doing. And the answer I am ver sure of would be No. So yesterday evening the Admiral and I opened a bottle of bubble water the French call Champagne to celebrate! :drunken:

Congratulations Roel! I'm jealous. It sounds like a sound decision. I'm sure you and the Admiral will be very happy.

Thanks Tony,
Hope it will turn out to be a good decision. Maybe start to import one or two Bayliners from the US! Just to keep me busy. :D

CONGRATULATIONS! Roel!
I can certainly appreciate what a difficult decision that is. I faced that when I decided to retire from the military. I had a friend tell me once, that when the time came... I would just "know" it. One day it did.
I'm sure you're faced with the uncertainty of it all, but in short order you'll start to realize you made an excellent choice. We expect to see even MORE of you here then! :)
Again... Congratulations to both you and your family... take a deep breath and catch a sunrise or two... :)

funny, I was just talking to my DIL about retiring out here in MD and commented that I could easily retire out here and not have to work (housing is still affordable) and it would allow us to travel and enjoy my boat more and being close to Andrws AFB, do some overseas traveling as well. SO, I am going to start looking in earnest if the Admiral says OK... Of course she'd rather live in HI, but I told her it would only be with her new husband... :P
PS: I am thinking 2 years max to make this all happen...

Roel,
Congratulations! It seems like a wise move to me. I know so many people who continued to work so that they could enjoy life after they retired, only to find that by the time they eventually did retire, they were too old or too frail to really enjoy the things they had waited for so long to do.
I still look back on the internal struggle I had when I decided to resign my commission in 1981 after eighteen years in the Navy. It was a very tough wrestle at the time, but it continues to be one of the wisest decisions I ever made.
I raise my glass to you and to your new lifestyle.

Roel,
That is great news. Will your wife retire too?
Now you need to do what a lot of people do here. Buy a motorhome and head South during winter. Then in the spring and summer, you can boat. They are called "snow birds" here.
Good luck, I envy you!

Sorry my friends that I didn't response earlier but we have really beautiful weather over here so it was possible to get some people off the an evening boating list! :D
Yesterday I decided to go over to look if Jarno Houkes boat did already arrive in his Marina. (See his posts at BOC) Walked the piers and didn't see a 285 so I walked to the parking lot as I noticed Jarno's wife Olga
jarno was in his car and they were awaiting the trailer with the to come.
When she arrived and put in the water I stayed and helped them with the shrink wrap and installing the radar Arch. What a beauty they bought in NC. Is the only boat with a NC numb er in the Marina :D
Diane, unfortunately (not for me) the wife is 14 years younger so she will have to work but she likes it, is making good money and she wants a new 325 and I gave up resistance, as she allowed me to buy a Breitling Watch for my retirement. :D
No, no Camper but in the future we will go to the VAIL Colorado snow again!
Because I want to see your faces, a trip to WA is in the book, the same goes for NC and to Florida.

I think retirerment it is a difficult decision but I think there will be some work in the future (import one or two Bayliners combined with a US holiday for both of us) and as said here indeed you know when the time is there and that's now. At the moment I am halve working halve busy with other things like helping Jarno and what is so nice although I always liked my work, the idea that I don't have to do anything but only when I like or want it is already giving me a great feeling.

Definitely let us know when, where you're going to be in this area Roel. If you had a couple of days, I'm sure we could take turns transporting you around to some of the fun things to see and do around here.
I had said once before it would be fun if we could give you the whirlwind tour of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. Here are acouple of ideas:
A couple of us could meet you at the airport and get you safely to your hotel. From there maybe...
An evening trip out of Bell Harbor with someone to see the Seatte skyline at night.
Maybe tour the Boeing plant one afternoon?
Dinner somewhere with the appropriate Seattle flair?
Hitch a ride to the San Juans on someones boat to a hotel like Rosario?
A fishing trip or two?
Tour of the Bayliner manufacturing plant?
Visit aboard an aircraft carrier?
Test drive a big ole Bay with Ted on Lake Washington
Buy you a 'real' Northwest Beer
Of course transporation around the area would be an easy one with as many as there are here.
Any number of ideas come to mind, and I'm sure there are more. ANy other ideas folks? I'm sure we can keep an old retired guy like Roel out of trouble. :)

I'm in. I'll take Roel out on KT and whoever else we can fit on 'er. We even have a spare room for Roel and his bride!
Other ideas for entertainment...Roel, ever taken a tour of an American service station? It's not Boeing but...I bet I can even get ya inside the ubiqutous cooler... ;)
And one more thing...Roel may like getting in "trouble"...hehehe...

Get your dates together Roel. I'm sure we can have your whole trip figured out for you in no time. I'd bet you could get water-taxi service between all of our favorite destinations out here. Pick ya up at the airport.... Maybe a night in Seattle, a night in Everett, over to Port Townsend for a night there... across to Friday Harbor or Rosario... back across on a ferrey... back down to Seattle... heck we could have quite a tour operation going in no time :)
:)

Thanks all for the overwhelming warm responses!
But as I have said before as long as our Cat lives and we both hope that will be for a long time to come, we simply aren't able to go somewhere other than take her on the boat where she can get here daily necessary medicine.
But as we look at her it's also clear that's she is an old cat and although she is still exploring the boat and we are enjoying each others company. Our vetenarian is amazed every time again when we pick up her medicine that she still is so good and alive. So we have all to wait but as our proverb over here says "What's in a good barrel doesn't get sour" we will meet in the future and have a very good time!. :cat:

We've got an old stray that adopted us when we lived in Hawaii. That was 16 years ago. He finally lost all his teeth and is in the best health ever. :)
Amazing animals when they get the right care and genetics. I can certainly understand the inability to travel with a "senior" cat. :)
Let us know when you get the urge to explore the Northwest though...

As we have vacation next weeks and will go out with the boat for at least two weeks and as we take the Cat with us the Admiral went to the Veterinarian to check her blood pressure and the heart. Due to the medicines she gets it was stable and good. :D
Retirement officially is the first of August so some matters had be taken care off. Had a bitter battle with competition over selling a CtP system but Friday last day of working I won the game! So I have to go to the Company to work make the necessary arrangements. Beside I will meet my boss who is back from a week boating.
Yesterday we bought a new car for me as mine is company leased and I need transportation to the Marina and the Golf course. :D
Bought a Hyundai Tucson. Not the 4 wheel as I really don't know where I can use that on this flat pancake we live on. Also got my retirement present from the Admiral and could read that Gene is back and I didn't see much :argh here so sometimes live is really good!

Roel glad to hear of your retirement. You will likely stay just as busy, maybe end up being a boat broker . I wish no ill for your cat, but look forward to the time you get to visit us. Gene

Thanks Gene,
Jarno Houkes just mailed me his total costs of importing his 2003 Bayliner Ciera 285 with all the bells and whistles! I think if he sells her now $ 15,000 easy win! We are gone for holidays today or this week depends on weather forecast! don't know if I can post coming weeks but will takes some pictures!
Have a good time all! :D
