Does anybody have a surplus prop? Volvo-Penta 854983 or Michigan Wheel 082013. 15 x 19 LH.

I would like to carry a spare because of all the sticks and stuff in the river.

I found two on ebay for my boat. One was new and one was almost new but balanced at the prop shop.

Call these guys:

They have all sorts of props, it might take them a bit to check if they have one that matches. Right now they have a sign up saying, "accepting all offers on props". Good deals on used parts there.

I might have what your looking for. Think it isa 15", but could also be 16" diameter. Let me know if you are interested. Will dig'em out.
For sure it is a LH though.

The one I need is Volvo No. 854983 or Michigan Wheel No. 082013-1

I'll look in the basement tomorrow. Pretty sure (95%) that I actually might have both.

Sorry for the delay. Did check eventually (hidden in the garage behind some stuff).

I have two Michagan Wheel. One is 16x13LH and the other one is another 16" diameter. Pitch is higher, guess 16-17", but the markings are impossible to read.

Also have a Volvo, but that one is pretty corroded. It is a 16x15 LH. After polishing and painting, it'd work as a spare.

If anyone of these will work as a spare for you, let me know.

RE volvo LH or RH....on mine it was very easy to change from left to right rotation so if your leg is that accomodating the only worry is the "prop walk" you would need to get used to if you changed.

My volvo prop had an unrepairable rubber hub that if the prop were "spun" makes the prop trash. I thought I had a spare and when the main spun I thought no problem I have a spare....too bad the spare had been spun by previous owner and he forgot to mention it.....

found the new ones on ebay.....(but did not get used due to the spun issue0

Very true. Older VP drives are very easy to change (prop) direction on. Only issue can be if they've been run (very) long in one direction (assuming most of us go forward a majority of the time...) and the gears have "mated" for that direction. You might then have some "whine" if you change prop direction.

As for the dried out hubs, I've heard the worst ones are the MW. Maybe because they are so common.

Has anyone tried "securing" a slipping prop to the rubber by means of screws through the flange into the rubber? Of course only possible for a spare that is intended only to take you into safe harbor, no LD cruising or high speed. Just an idea that passed my mind.... :-)

Funny you mention the idea of mechanical fastening the rubber hub as that went through my mind too..When my first prop spun and then the second the boat still had idle speed headway and I was close enough to help but I thought if I had to go for hours I could drill three holes in the alum. hub (eque-distant from each other) and then send three long screws into the rubber...the thought being an attempt to keep things somewhat balanced and allow the screws to take place of the normal but missing vulcanizing and or friction that kept the hub and prop spinning at the same rate.....

seems like if you accelerated slowly and maybe stayed at max hull speed you could keep from sheering off the screws....then it would be time for duct tape!

Wonder if you could "pre-drill" holes for an emergency repair? Not setting the screws... but having the holes there in case you spun one later? It's a purely mechanical friction fit in there anyhow.
