I have an 89 2155 Ciera with 5.0 L OMC Cobra. The boat starts ok when cold, runs fine, idles fine, but after I run it for a while and shut it off, it cranks but doesn't start. Kind of hard to troubleshoot. Does this sound like a fuel or electronics problem?
Also, does anyone have any reviews for Master Marine in Mount Vernon? I took my boat there for a service and now it doesn't go into reverse; it doesn't even want to come out of drive. I took it back and they said it has a broken shift cable inside the drive. I'm just surprised this didn't come up during the service, esp since they pulled the drive. I don't know enough about outdrives to have an opinion. They're not admitting fault.

There was a guy on the BOC with this kind of engine problem. He found all he needed was a tune up. Plugs, points distributer cap and rotor, new fuel filters, and he was good to go. Is your boat due for a yearly tune up?
If the shift cable is broken it will need to be replaced. The big question is will you do it yourself, if not, who do you trust to do it in a fair and honest fashion?

Yes, they replaced everything during the service.
Master Marine is replacing the cable; I'm just wondering if they were responsible for breaking it in the first place. It never had a shifting problem before the service, but it's been sitting all winter. Could the cable have been damaged in the process of pulling and re-installing the drive?
I'm bummed because the part doesn't get in until Friday and they might not finish this week. We rented a beach house on SJI with a dock, and were going to meet my folks there on Sunday for their 50th.

If you are really troubled by this, make sure that you ask for the broken parts back. If nothing else it might indicate what caused the problem.
Did you have the problem with the boat not starting when hot before you took it into them for service?

Yes, I had the same starting problem last year. I was hoping that the service would cure it. I'm thinking it could be the coil, but troubleshooting by replacement gets expensive.

Well I'm thinking they did not hook up the shift cable in the out drive. When Mike AKA some sailor and I were helping Eric last year he had the same problem. Mike knew immediately what the problem was, the cable was not connected. Also I'm not sure if it is on your engine but on some of them there is a secondary solenoid that sits on top of the engine. On my old 2452 it went bad. It would start and run fine but once warmed up nothing, ask them about it.

My Bayliner has an old 260A carbed model Volvo in it. If I shut it off while the engine is at operating temp and try to restart it without giving it some fuel, it won't start. I believe it gets good old fashioned vapor lock which I still don't understand.
The solution is to spray a touch of starting fluid in the carb. Starts right up. To avoid it, I start it with 1/4 throttle when its warm. It almost never happens now. I do keep the starting fluid handy for tight situations though. It does die once in a while and if that happens docking, I need it started in a hurry!
I've troubleshot this problem for over a year. Still no answer so I do the above.
Opening the hatch and spraying a quick shot of starting fluid in the carb when it won't start might be worth trying . . . it may give you some clues.

Yup my old gal does the same thing after starting cold, then trying to start again after fueling soon after.

Electric chokes open up after a few minutes, and if the motor needs it later, it's not there. Also bot engine compartments stay hot, so they don't reset near as fast as cars do. Does it start if you pump the throttle?

That is how I resolve the issue, by pumping the throttle while starting it, all is fine then!
