Security System Bargain

A couple of you have asked about the camera system I have on the boat, and hoped the price would come down. Mine is a 4 camera unit that I paid bit over $200 for with coupons and a sale.

But here's an 8 camera system for $169 on Woot!

Wow. Current owner of the boat was playing with a video system, but nothing installed yet. For $169, I'll buy and try...

I have one (4 camera) and it can be set up for motion activation. Pretty cool to see who's been peeking in or poking around. The camera feeds (or playback) can be routed to any TV or to a chartplotter that takes video input.

I was looking at this closely for consideration, but it says that it doesn't include a hard drive for recording the video images.
Is this a normal approach for surveillance systems, to have to get your own hard drive to make it a complete system?

I didn't notice that they didn't have a drive in those. Looks like you just need to bolt a drive in. Mine has a USB port you can send video to as well. Still a bargain for a video monitoring setup for a boat I think.

I plan on hooking mine up on the trawler too. I only have 4 cameras but I figured one forward looking down at the bow, one aft watching the swimstep, one looking at the helm area and then one in the engine room. I have another camera and 4 extra channels so I could expand a bit, but I like the idea of knowing who's been there. That second one you posted seems like a great deal with a larger hard drive than mine. I think mine is a 365GB drive.

Using these cameras, have you seen anything interesting?

Not really. When I first installed it, I had a hard time getting the false alarms (wind blowing the canvas, etc), but then I caught a seagull on my dinghy. :) I did have a pic of someone walk up and peek in and then walk away. I would fast forward through it and then suddenly this guy was standing there. Pretty anti-climatic... but just that one occurrence.

That might make a good back up camera system on a boat... hmm...

We bought another of the Harbor Freight units for my mother in law just last week Used a 20% coupon and had it all setup and wired in a couple of hours. Works great and its funny to see the paper boy goofing off in the morning. She had some problems with local kids trashing her yard, so hopefully we'll catch them now.

They come in magazines, but here's one here. Just print that and hand it over. I use them over and over. :)

The new one is even nicer than the one I bought. They work from a mouse and have an even larger (500GB) hard drive.
