They're still out there... but would be crucified in politics. So, like most good Generals... when their job is done, they go buy a fly rod and fade into history.

Tommy Franks, Norman Schwarzkopf and Colin Powell all come to mind.

Colin Powell is the only one I know specifically is not of the same mold. Although being awarded 2 purple hearts in Vietnam and serving a stint in Korea, he is definately a bureaucrat through and through.

I'm talking about the no BS, not sugar coating, slightly insane, inspire the common folk to face reality, hardcore leader.

Well... I've eaten at the same table as General Franks... they're all very aware of the political aspirations (and ramifications) of being in charge these days.

You'll never see the likes of a rebelious General like Patton was known to be.. those days are gone. These guys today are weaned in a politically charged career path where those not willing to play the game (or at least understand the rules) fall from the ranks rather abruptly.

Kinda neat, I'm a scorched earth kinda guy so it works for me. Not practical in todays political climate. War only really works if you are more brutal than the opponent. You can't modify thousands of years of belief and behavior in a few months. You have to make the bastards regret they ever heard of the USA. They won't quit because they lost a fair fight, were told to by the UN or got voted out of power. They will only quit when they are all gone or possibly when the costs of their thoughts and actions are so great they decide it's not worth the return devastation...if you turn the other cheek, be sure to have a rifle butt nestled against it........ :argh
