Well, I stopped by a friends home to pick up a paint sprayer and then stopped at Sportco to check on their gigantic tent sale... Gee, I hate good sales! I bought a bunch of "good stuff" the admiral will call "not needed stuff" when she finds out... anyway, on the way home I turned onto a street from a left turn signal and drove into the far right lane when out of no where a kid cuts from the oncoming lane right in front of me into the 7/11 parking lot. I clipped his right rear fender and he got my right front fender and crammed the door on the pax side so it will not open. Luckily no one was hurt. My 2001 Audi A6 has its hood and fender buckled, right front head light and turn signal taken out and the protective plastic over the headlight cracked and paint scraped off the front bumper. The bags did not deploy in either car.

I call the cops, they come, no witnesses so no fault to blame... I tell the cop to check his plates on the car when they were obviously not checking them... He sees they expired last month AND The kid has expired insurance besides expired plates on his step dads car and no current insurance card... Did I mention he had only a beginners drivers license? He does have USAA like I do so all should be fine. But it'll be costly to repair the Audi... Its drivable but I am PO'd!!!

USAA will send a rep out to check it tomorrow. Nice company to deal with for sure... so much for going out on the water tomorrow!

Darn teen drivers!!!

Sorry about that, Doug. If it makes you feel any better I ticket EVERY person who can't show proof of insurance. Makes my blood boil too!

The law should require everyone to show proof of insurance with every licence renewal!

In British Columbia, and I suspect in most other Canadian provinces, the automobile license is a part of the insurance package, and cannot be issued separately.

The problem is that not all licensed drivers will have vehicles in their name (kids, wives, parents, work vehicles, etc). In some states (Texas comes to mind), there is an annual safety inspection sticker on the window. It does away with the tabs altogether. You're required to have proof of insurance, safety inspection, smog and valid drivers license to get the sticker.

The nice thing is if you get caught without any of the above, the Officer writes the citation, pulls the sticker (all set with a pull tab and VOID backing) and you get to drive with the ticket as proof until you get back in for another. :)

It's very effective and very inexpensive.

Heck you sould know that about 40% of the dirvers in WA do not have current insurance. So the next time you are sitting at a stop light almost half the drivers around are uninsured.
Showing that piece of paper doesn't mean they are insured either.
We call them card shoppers- they come in get isureance for a month then cancle the policy- still have a card that shows them insured for 6 months!

That's the nice part of the Texas safety sticker program. It's a mandatory item and Officer WILL pull you over if it's missing or "voided".

It works under the guise of "public safety" so an Officer can pull over anyone he feels to validate that sticker.

If you buy a 6 month policy... you get a 6 month sticker. It doesn't take long before you run out of companies to insure through (with the plan of canceling just to get the sticker).

I really like the idea because the Officer can revoke the vehicles operation simply by pulling the sticker. If he does it for no insurance... pretty simple for a judge to figure out what the problem was if it goes to court and a person is required to show continuous coverage for the period in question.

There are a million great ways to use it.

DUI? Pull the tab.
No registration? Pull the tab.
Mandatory appearance ticket? Pull the tab.
Accident ticket? Pull the tab.
Unlicensed operator? Pull the tab.
Modified smog? Pull the tab.

Incredibly loud rap music? Shoot the driver.... (oops... old law) :D

We do not insure everyone who walks into our office. If I see a bunch of canceled policies on their record I will offer them a six month policy paid in full with proof of current insurance.
The TX way sounds like the way to go but this is WA after all and we can't offend anyone by singeling them out.
In CA if you have an unpaid ticket you can't register your car untill its paid- Always though that was fair!
