Recreational crabbing season to end
on Labor Day in some areas
OLYMPIA – The recreational crab fishery will close at 7 p.m. Monday in eight Puget Sound areas, but some might reopen after a catch assessment is completed, according to a reminder issued today by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW).
Waters set to close Labor Day evening include marine areas 6 (eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca), 7 South (San Juan Islands), 8-1 (Deception Pass to East Point), 8-2 (East Point to Possession Point), 9 (Admiralty Inlet), 10 (Seattle/Bremerton), 11 (Tacoma/Vashon) and 12 (Hood Canal).
The final numbers for the summer months won’t be known until late September, said Rich Childers, WDFW shellfisheries manager. In areas where allocation remains for the recreational fishery, additional openings will be announced in October, he said.
All other areas will remain open until at least Sept. 30, Childers said. Marine Area 7 East (Anacortes - Bellingham) and Marine Area 7 North (Lummi Island - Blaine) will continue on a Wednesday-through-Saturday schedule and, as a bonus, the entire Labor Day weekend. Crabbing is open seven days a week in Marine areas 4 (Neah Bay), 5 (Sekiu) and 13 (south Puget Sound).
